I managed to score the original Black mufflers that came with my Lario, they are a bit scratched up so I want to repaint them
What is the paint they use to blacken the exhaust, anything simple like BBQ paint.
-
A powder coater will be able to ceramic coat them, it will last a very long time and won't rust.
-
Other than power coat, there are quite a few choices for high temperature black paint these days. For head pipes I've been using VHT "Flame Proof" ceramic paint. For the less hot parts I've gotten away with ordinary satin black spray paint in some cases, and some high temperature paints in others. But barbecue grill paints tend to be dark grey and a little chalky in some cases. Some experimenting may be in order.

Wouldn't powder coat require you to strip down to the bare metal?

:1: Never used it on bike exhausts I must admit but on vehicles, yes.
-
I also used the VHT flameproof stuff on my Le Mans headpipes. Its held up good, but its kind of a chalky flat black/greyish color. I would like to have them done professionally in the future, along with the mufflers, and crossover, but I would like something a bit more glossy black, as close to the original black chrome as possible. as far as powdercoating goes, I am pretty sure they sand /media blast the parts down to bare metal beforehand.

I'm thinking powder coat for my Le Mans my 2 project, if you take the $$$$ hit, it would be the way to go wouldn't it ? Is the finish similar to standard and not too crass or " bright". What is considered the best thing for originality ? Huzo.

Rick, I wonder if you used the Flameproof product, or one of the others they sell. They have another one, rated 1200 degrees F I think, that is as you describe. The ceramic Flameproof 2000 degree stuff I got is a really nice looking satin black. I did have to strip the pipe down to bare metal though, because remainders of the previous paint caused the satin finish to vary, giving it a mottled look.

Ceramic coating does require bare metal, the shop will blast the surface then ceramic coat.
I have head several mufflers done, very happy with the result and the mufflers will not get as hot.
-
Any idea what they blast it with? I think it has to be pretty smooth to look good. Also do you recommend anyone for that?

Duplicolor engine paint works for me.
They offer many colors

My pipes are satin black ceramic coated; you can't get a better black finish imo.

The Black Ceramic looks great. How does it hold up to cleaning? I get a lot of bugs and road tar. Mike

just did my CX100 Bubs. I traveled it to cedar vale and back and they are still like I just did them right up to the cylinder. Very happy with that.
I recommend the Eastwood.com product which comes in either brush on or rattle can (I got both). Flat black.
They now look new.
I used emery cloth and cleaned the off rust and old coating down to metal. Then acetone, and put 3 coats on. I got the brush on stuff to do touch up if needed.

I wash my pipes with car shampoo and they come up like new; the finish and lustre are very durable.

They certainly look good. :thumb:

These original Silentium mufflers were in very bad shape, I spent a few hours sanding the chrome down with an orbital sander with a foam pad to get the steel smooth. The finished treated them to a semi gloss black ceramic coating. The ceramic is much tougher than powder coating. I am very happy with the end result. After I sanded the pipes the finisher went over them with a glass bead blast prior to coating.

you got two choice
ceramic coating or spray paint.
do not attempt to powder coat pipes or mufflers.... it will come off.....
-
Stevex, who did the work? I'd like to get in touch with them.

Not sure I agree. I replaced the rotted out stock muffler of my Yamaha XT500 with another good used one. Came blasted to bare metal with a light coating of primer. I took it to my local powdercoater and had them do it what they call "high temperature powder". That was two years and lots of muddy trails ago - it still looks like the day I installed it.

Last year I wanted to powder coat the hearders of my guzzi and the powder coating shop ( which i do a lot of work with them ) did not do it because he told me he would go back to powder .
He sent me to a guy that does ceramic coating.
Maybe he did not have high temp powder and did not even bother getting it just for me.

Camcoat Performance Coatings...but they're in the UK.

Header pipes are a different matter - I wouldn't have them powdercoated even with the high-temp powder. But, it has worked very well on a number of mufflers they've done for me, including those on my Morini K2.

Thank you Stevex
I got what I needed from the website. Now I know the product they used and can track down a place here in the US. Perfect!
