Title: Texas riders heading to John Day -National Rally this year?
Post by: PJPR01 on May 12, 2016, 07:51:49 PM
Anyone planning to head out to John Day this year...chances are improving that I might be able to make the trip out...it's about 2000 miles door to door, thinking it might be a leisurely 4 days ride out thru some fun routes...

Just about done with my current Pilot Road 4's, so going to have to get a new set for the trip...probably use up 50% of the life on the full trip I should imagine.

I would really, really, like to do this ride.  Probabality about 45% at this point.

Would be a pleasure to ride with you and other Texans.

Give me another week to give you some good routes as I'm still putting in 12 hour days cleaning up from the tornado.  Insurance doesn't cover  over $4K in damage to fallen trees. Prolly end up selling the Guzzis.

As much as I'd like to have Tex's CalVin, I think there are enough of us here that if we were to kick in ten or twenty bucks apiece we could have him covered and save his Guzzis.
On the other hand, I'd love to see him riding bitch with Beaver.

Can't make it, Paul, but let me know of any future Lockhart runs.

Thanks all for the notes back here...looking better day by day to make the trip and any route suggestions are always welcomed!

Tex...don't sell the Guzzis - the GRIT and Texas and Guzzi activities wouldn't be the same without you...I'm sure we can find an alternative solution and would be glad to contribute to help out.

P - let's hope it works for you to get the time off...we could rendezvous again and ride an epic ride...hence the need for fresh tires too on my side!

Jack B- most definitely...will send up a signal next time I'm headed that way.

Fisherman - hope you can join us on a ride one weekend, shoot a note over when you free up and we can see that Cali in action.

Cheers fellas!

Not yet my Norge brother...out of the country working but when I get back will start putting together a route...

Would be great to ride out together!

Ok...a few more details:

I've paid my dues and am looking forward to a fun 2 weeks of riding:

My current plan is to leave Houston on Saturday June 18th and start heading NW on a combination of fun roads and some slab to cover some distance...all subject of course to any major weather patterns to be adjusted as the days evolve...

Rough planning would be put me headed thru Luckenbach, Sweetwater, Clovis NM, Las Vegas NM, Santa Fe NM, Pagosa Springs to Durango up to Ouray, the backway to Moab, and up thru Ogden, cross the Snake River and find some interesting routes from there to John Day thru Idaho, with maybe a stop in Ketchum along the way for a day or two.

Reverse - most likely out thru Lewiston, over Lolo Pass to Missoula and then again over the Beartooth, down to Cody WY, thru Yellowstone and the Tetons, stay a day or two in Jackson and then possibly detour to Devil's Tower and a fun route back home...

All subject to change and weather...

Two Wings or SmithSwede - if your plans work out and you want to rendezvous at some point in Texas/Colorado to join the caravan out to JD, Oregon...that would be fantastic!

Still working on the financing....Santa Fe seems like a good rendezvous since I will be using U.S. 64 to motor west...

It's probably too late for someone to mount up a sidecar , preferably with a fold down seat so I can catch a nap every few hours on the way up  I don't eat much

Very encouraging words fellas!  Hope it can happen for you - lots of great roads between here and there...just got my 2nd set of Pilot Road 4's in today to be mounted next week...new rubber for the trip!

A side car attached to the Norge...The Dusty Jackal may have to wear Doggles...I could mount a small split screen windshield on it perhaps!

The call of the open road...the uncertainty of where, when, how far one will go in a day, the joy of the ride, taking this turn, maybe that road, no known destination by the end of the day, the far off smell of the rain, fresh cut hay, a passing bakery, slowly the mountains appear in the distance,  feeling the air cool as the elevation rises, the occasional splat of fat rain drops clear the bugs on the windshield...ah yes...a Road Trip is about to be born again in just a few short weeks!

Hi Chris...aiming to be in Southwest Colorado (Durango) area most likely, then headed north to Ouray/Moab from there.  That's assuming Luckenbach doesn't put me back a full day or any untoward weather!

Good to see you are still plotting to come out!

I've ridden Fort Worth to Portland, OR a couple of times in the last few years.  Probably still have the Garmin files if you are interested.  Your return trip sounds good, at least until you leave Devils Tower and have to come back through Nebraska and Kansas.  I returned through California along the coast, hwy 1 & 101, then East to US 50 across Nevada & Utah, back into Colorado & New Mexico.  Great ride and would love to head that way again sometime.

Hello Paul;  May have just gotten the time to do this.. Route looks interesting, do you camp or motel??

Hello Sam - that sounds great!

I anticipate mostly hotel while on the road and camping at the rally itself.  But there are some really nice spots we're going thru so if the timing works out, I may pitch a tent on some of the nights.  Turns out my buddy Rob (owner of the Griso) may actually come along as well, but in my Passat TDI since it's too long of a ride for him, and in that case, I may be more open to camping as I can just throw the stuff in the car (cheating I know but so what, right?)

My preference is to grab hotels (La Quinta, Best Western, Holiday Inn) to avoid having to pack up everything in the morning and get on the road early enough to get in 12 hours of daylight riding, sight seeing, necessary stops along the way, taking some pics...

Playing with the maps again last night, I found an interesting route of out Sun Valley, the back way over the Sawtooths to John Day...that should make for a great final day or day and a 1/2 ride.  I was in Ketchum/ Sun Valley a few years ago on a 4x4 expedition in the winter, and would like to see it in the summer time.

Thanks Mike...I suspect that's where I would double back thru the Wind River range, down again thru Flaming Gorge and back into Western Colorado before coming down thru N. Mexico or across Texas on the way home.  Last time I did a really fun road from Vernal to Grand Junction...nice and remote, twisty and fun...no point in droning in the flats across the great plains this time around!

Hi Paul..

Lets keep in touch on timing.. I have a side trip to take the Monday after the rally to the Breedlove factory in Bend... I am a Breedlove player, would like to stop in and see the operation. Grabbing a hotel of the night where ever is fine. I don't camp, so I'll have to find something "near" the rally for those nights... Lets keep in touch..

Sounds good Sam....I saw on the rally site that there are a number of hotels nearby in John Day...hopefully they still have vacancies for the days of the Rally.  I spoke with Gerri the other night, sounds like 350 riders may be coming...presumably many are camping and some hoteling.

Will send you a text before heading out, or post up here on where / when we are headed.

Sounds like quite a few Norges heading to Oregon!

I missed the deadline...does anyone know if the camping area allow multiple tents on one site?

Chris...try calling Gerri or post a PM to Steve from the National thread, pretty sure there will still be sites available to camp, the price just went up I think $10 bucks or so...

Sam...my current route thinking is up above a few posts, with departure scheduled for June 18th in the morning headed towards Luckenbach as my first stop and then making my way North West towards Lubbock.

As with all trips, will be fluid depending on weather and whether I'm in the mood for speed or canyon carving!

Love to have you guys along for part or all of the ride depending on your desire

Camping is in an open field at the Fairgrounds. Pick an open spot, shouldn't be a problem. Restrooms and showers close by.  :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:    :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

Hi Paul;

Looked at your route... about 880 miles... that is a 2 day run?? However you are leaving on the 18th.. I can't get away until Monday the 20... I'll be 2 days behind you.. I'll just have to find you at the Event..

Hi Sam - 2 to 2.5 days for me to get from Houston to Durango depending on how hard I go the first day, (then I'll probably take 3 leisurely days to get to John Day via Sun Valley and over the Sawtooths (weather permitting), rather than the straight shot on the highway thru Boise...

If you did the highway, then sure 880 would be a 2 day slab run...but that's not much fun...I'm keen on doing some of the more fun twisty routes, and then have a couple days before the rally to explore around, probably arriving John Day by late Thursday or early Friday.

Post up if you can leave earlier...the math vectors may work out for an intersect along the way...would be fun to have the Norge Squadron fly in together!

Mammoth Hot Springs to John Day around the 22-24?

Hi Sam!

We are in Grand Junction...we left Pagosa Springs yesterday to Durango-Silverton-Ouray-Montrose, so today we are headed across Utah up thru Provo and into Idaho ...may get 1:2 way to John Day from here and then find some more twisty routes.

Main goal for today is to stay out of the furnace - temps were north of 107 registered and the bikes showed 118 while sitting at a stop.  Too much heat...

Hopefully you can catch us...should be easy to see a pair of Norges being tailed by a Passat TDI.

Hi Sam...

Two Wings and I and my friend Rob boogied across the desert bright and early... I made it to Twin Falls today...much better day temperature wise...we even had a chance to visit the Golden Spike...after making it thru SAlt Lake and Ogden traffic. Two wings made it another hour closer to Boise.
Tomorrow is not yet decided, we are only 250 from John Day, but I think we'll play a little on the Snake River or head to Sun Valley and the Sawtooths...not sure yet!
