Title: stange Norge light activity!!!
Post by: AH Fan on May 16, 2016, 10:25:08 PM
Hey Kids............. ok so making a weekend camping run with my Brother and he's ahead of me riding my 2014 Norge,We stop and he says that the headlight on my Norge (on low) is changing color from standard to a deep purple or some thing??
I'm thinking he's on some kind of medication and shouldn't be rolling along on his Stelvio so we change mounts and sure enough when I'm a certain distance away from him I can see the Norges head light system gradually cycling from standard color to a kind of purple color then back again and continues doing this at what appears to be random intervals??

Anyone want to take a run at this one?

Of sound mind and body

If you're using standard bulbs, the only reason for a color change would be a change in temperature or conductivity - so check your wiring and the clips holding the bulbs in.

Of course, it could more likely be those funny mushrooms you added to the campfire spaghetti....

Actually my Norge's the same and I suspect everyone's is. I actually don't know but I wonder if it's polarisation of the light. I do know the color changes to the observer as the bike pitches on the road surface. A starting GUESS could be the different refractive index of the light means the various frequencies leave the lens at slightly different angles a bit like the Dark Side of the Moon album cover with the lens acting as a prism to a degree. That's all I've got.

Actually, that's likely a close guess. The projector lens setups do allow for better focus of visible frequencies near the center of the intended path, and other light is less centrally focused.

I've also had other riders tell me my taillights become brighter or dimmer as we ride - and when I check, it's because the LEDs are just a bit too directional. Another good reason for my added lighting.

Funnily enough I was on a Bikesafe course this weekend and the copper with us said that the Breva headlight did strange things at certain angles

More "potent" bulb / aux lights sounds like a plan

They all do that.

Projector beam headlight.

I first noticed it on Norge shortly after they were introduced.

Yup, What Rocker said.    White light has within it a full spectrum of colors. A prism of crystal will divide that light into its components.  Projector beams act to focus the light and along the edges you can see the color change.

Correct.  My Tiger 1050, Dodge RAM truck, and Norge all have projector lights and all exhibit the same (perceived) color change.
Ditto on LED tail lights.  MUCH less visible off axis which makes a good case for aux lighting.
