Title: GPS speedo what to do with drive hole
Post by: Joliet Jim on May 17, 2016, 08:09:08 PM
Ok replacing the dead speedo with a GPS unit from speed hut on the old Cali stone. Any suggestions on what to use to cover the hole where the speedo cable goes? Also anybody reuse the chrome speedo housing?

The inner plastic of a bottle cap/other earth-shaped (flatXround) gasket and the screw collar from the dead tach cable?*

*Extra points if you think of how to squeeze any more stereotypical guzzisti into that statement without using the words "suspenders", "dino", or "clamp".

Jim, just take the drive to a bolt store to match up the thread with something and install it. Do remember though that under the speedo drive pinion there is a hardened steel washer. Make sure you pluck it out with a magnet after removing the pinion or you'll end up in a world of pain.

I went to the hardware store and bought a piece of black PVC pipe fitting that had about the right shape. I cut it out and glued it to the inside of the bucket with gooey black stuff (probably RTV IIRC). This was a Speedhut gauge in place of an ITI on a 2003 V11 LeMans.

Or blue mood lighting could work...

Here's how I adapted some home electrical parts to mount the stock bucket over the Speedhuts. There's a thread with a lot of other ideas over at V11LeMans.com. I think it's called "Installing Speedhut Gauges."

Thanks guys for some good ideas, well maybe not dusty.   I was probably leaning towards the RK solution because I hadn't rally thought about pulling the drive and just replacing with a bolt. I'll have to checkout v11 again for that thread.

What's wrong with mood lighting ? Seriously , ran a pair of switches for lights and ignition on the /5 , the type that light up when in the on position . One red , one blue , really kind of cool .

Just fill it in with Bondo and spray it black.

Thanks kiwi Roy but I meant the engine side  :thumb: and the stone has a chrome speedo bucket, but still better than the mood lighting suggestion

Take the nut off the old cable and glue a dime to it.
