Title: How many of you have done this ouch
Post by: redrider90 on May 17, 2016, 09:17:08 PM
It has been an amazing year so far for ticks. I have had only 2 on me so far. Usually it is a lot more.
Well tonight I go to pee and see a large lone star tick buried in my scrotum.  :violent1:
I get my wife who is usually very good at taking them off my scrotum as else where.
Well the fu***er broke off leaving the the pinchers stuck in my scrotum looking for a good meal  :food:
So I pulled out the scalpel and doused everything in rubbing alcohol and dug the mouth parts out under a the light of a LED flashlight. I did it mostly by feel as it was bleeding and could no longer see the mouth parts. I pushed up hard against the skin and was able to feel the tip of the scalpel under the hard tick mouth and dig it out. How about them apples. I was not going to bed without digging that sucker out of my precious jewels.

Should I include  :gotpics: or do you guys get the idea.

PS: by the way. 5 weeks ago I fractured my wrist and am now out of a cast and wearing a hand splint. With a cast on i could never have operated on myself. When I got the removable hand splint they allow me to use my thumb. So kudos to myself  that I actually did this with a fractured right hand.

It is often possible to cause a tick to remove itself from areas of (shall we say) sensitivity. If you slather the tick and surrounding area with vaseline, it cuts off oxygen - and the tick can't use what's in your blood. This doesn't always work, but it's worth keeping in mind.

That being said, if the ticks are out en masse, check with your local health department on whether Lyme disease has been found in your area. The treatments for it work best if applied early.

Now as for photos - No. No need whatsoever. In fact, h*ll no!

Ticks, we don't have no stinkin' ticks in Arizona, not even fleas, among other insects you out of area humans have to live with.      All we got is coyotes, snakes, not even many flies unless there are some horses around.  No mosquitos either, `cause above ground water is scarce here.

Yes, it does happen. No, you can't imagine waking up from a dead cold sleep and finding that.

$1000 to the man that can wait for Vaseline to work under those conditions. $2000 if he has the balls to tell his wife. $3000 if they get back into bed without dumping the sheets.

And the grand prize if said man doesn't then do the TSA mirror squat just to make sure it was the only one.

No complaints if this thread gets locked. :lipsrsealed:

Had a similar incident after frolicking in the woods with my girlfriend, now my wife.
Seated at dinner with some friends when I felt an excruciating pain in the tip of my willy.
Jumped up from the table, determined the cause, and called my girl for assistance.  We retired to the bathroom, while the little bas### was gnawing a hole in the most sensitive part of my anatomy.  She grabbed a tweezers and dispatched the critter with one guick pluck, dabbed the wound with some antibiotic cream, washed her hands and returned to her guests, while I sat on the toilet recuperating.  There were a few raised eyebrows when I returned whimpering to the table.

Gotta love a lady who is level headed in an emergency.  I did and still do.

Ticks are not insects.  They are arachnids.  Count the legs, they have eight.
oil or vaseline is your best first attempt at removal.  The old ,"burn them with a cigarette" trick is not good.
When you burn their butt, the pain makes them puke into the bite wound and then you are injected with whatever disease the beast is carrying.  Oil or grease makes them want to pull out.

BTW if you are into self surgery, I have a scalpal and about 90 sterile blades left, I use them on warts and other nasty things,  get a bottle of ora-gel.   It is used to deaden toothache pain while waiting for your dental appointment to arrive.  ( I have had to wait as much as a month and a half and ora-gel is the angel of mercy) The stuff contains 20% benzocaine.  That is the highest percentage I have found without a prescription.  If it can make a tooth nerve numb, which it does in a few seconds,  Maybe spreading it around the site where you need to cut, or sew, will make your imitation of Rambo less noisey.  Just a thought.

It really wasn't that bad. I have lots of experience with ticks. But when your options are 1. leave it and let it get infected; which is not an option.
2. go the doc or the urgent care and let them do it.
3. carefully do it myself. I was lucky as it was in an easy area to access with my hands and scalpel. If it had been down low around the back door my poor wife would have had to stick her head in the nether nether land and have at it. Ugly

This post made people at work ask "what's wrong??" That's how bad my reaction was.

I've had tick bites too, I once had one bite me in February. I thought I got all the mouth parts out when I pulled it out, then in May it got infected and they had to cut out the entire piece that was infected. That's the only time I've had stiches in my skin so far. There wasn't even anything in the part they cut out. I hate those little bastards, always have, always will!

This happened many moons ago, long before Lyme disease became endemic in Texas.  No self surgery needed, no subsequent infection.  Complete recovery credited to prompt and decisive action during the attack.

Over here in oz we have all the good things that bite, from crocs, snakes, spiders, ants and ticks.
There is an increasing incidence of mammalian meat allergy from ticks, that means you become allergic to ALL red meat. Enforced vegetarian as a lifestyle anyone?
This seems to be caused by incorrect removal of the tick, causing it to vomit or leaving the head still buried. This injects an enzyme found in all animals the tick feed on, except humans, we don't carry that enzyme, so your immune system goes to town on it causing anything from a mild rash to aniphallaxis and possible death after eating red meat.
The current advice is to freeze the tick with wart remover or skin tag remover, this kills it and prevents it vomiting. Then you carefully remove it.
Full marks to attacking your scrotum with sharp implements, it probably ranks with cutting a limb off to escape whatever.
Cheers

Having your digerridoo sucked by a tick or any other kind of bug is less than fun.  Same goes for the bag.
Self surgery is impossible on your own bootie so you better have good friends.  I have done self surgeries on plantar warts on the bottom of my feet.  (I was more flexible in those days) I made my own surgical tools using a dremel and spring steel.  It was a sort of semicircular gouge to go deep enough to get the root of that bad boy.   It was a bloody and painful operation  but was successful in that it did not re occur.
I once set a broken bone in my own leg but I have told that story here about 5 or 6 years ago.  I only recommend you do such a thing if you have no other choice to get yourself out of the woods or other bad situation.

So our US and English friends, come on down, we can't have all the fun.......

Tick red meat allergy is a big problem in the US.A bite from the Lone Star tick can cause people to develop an allergy to red meat, including beef and pork.
From the "Allergist"
" This specific allergy is related to a carbohydrate called alpha-gal and is best diagnosed with a blood test. Although reactions to foods typically occur immediately, in the instance of allergic reactions to alpha-gal, symptoms often take several hours to develop. Owing to the significant delay between eating red meat and the appearance of an allergic reaction, it can be a challenge to connect the culprit foods to symptoms. Therefore, an expert evaluation from an allergist familiar with the condition is recommended. The Lone Star tick has been implicated in initiating the red meat allergy in the US and this tick is found predominantly in the Southeast from Texas, to Iowa, into New England".
