Title: Lost our furry friend. Rest in peace, Hannah.
Post by: jas67 on May 20, 2016, 05:49:28 PM
It was a sad day for our family, as our nearly 15 year hold Labrador, Hannah passed away earlier today.
She had been slowly declining for the last year and a half, with dementia and seizures.   Our vet said that she likely had cancer, a tumor in the brain likely caused the dementia and seizures as well as balance issues, she was falling a lot near the end.    She had also lost a lot of weight (about 25%), down from 55 lbs when she was healthy to 42 lbs. at her last checkout a couple weeks ago.

Despite her failing body, her spirit was willing to the end.  She was still anxious for her daily walk right up to this morning's walk.    We were down to only walking about a half a mile.  She had good days and bad, but, always completed the walk willing, some days  more slowly than others.

July 2001 to 20-May-2016.    Rest in peace, Hannah, until we meet again....

Big friendly dogs don't live as long as  nasty little drop kick dogs.
That your Lab made it 15 years is evidence of how she was cared for.

All dogs are good, some have bad masters.

We had a 14 year old yellow lab that developed the same issues, it's called vestibular disease.   Our old girl, Faith, had attacks on and off over her last couple of years.  She also was a sweet girl.  I know exactly how you and your family feel and you have a deep hole in your heart.  If I can offer one word of advice, we put off getting another dog for almost 2 years as we were so tired from dealing with a needy sick dog.  Approx 9 months ago a dog was bestowed upon us by a friend of my brother's that was moving away.  We now realize what we were missing and in many ways our girl Faith manifests herself everyday through Serena.
My condolences, Tim

So sorry to hear of her passing...I had a black lab who was a wonderful companion and would immediately head for and jump in the bathtub whenever the water started running...great breed!  :thumb:

I'm sorry for your loss. Labs are great dogs. I think dogs are intended to live 10-15 years so we can experience a few special friends during our lifetime. I always think no dog will measure up to the one I just lost but they each are unique and shine in their own way.

Our lab Kona in 2009 when she was about 7 months old. She couldn't even wait for me to lower the truck tailgate. As soon as I lifted the shell door she would spring like a deer up and over the tailgate and into the truck.

Kona is beautiful!    She reminds me of my chocolate lab, Shelby, that I had before Hannah.      Shelby was stricken with a rare auto-immune disorder at the tender age of 6.    She had lost almost a full third of her body mass when we had her put down.   And yes, I thought no dog would measure up to Shelby.   Hannah definitely measured up.    She house trained quickly, and was a faithful companion.   When she became incontinent, she was truly remorseful every time it happened.   I felt bad for her, as she knew better, but, couldn't help it.

Lost of a family member is always tough. Sorry for your loss. If and when ready please consider adopting a shelter dog. This is "Marley" (He came with the name). Adopted at one year old from the local shelter. The picture was taken about 30 seconds after bringing him home for the first time.

Jay,

My family lost or beloved Sadie in 2010 and I swore off dogs as I couldn't let another into my heart. They love too much and live too short. Fortunately time has a way with mellowing a person and on Christmas Eve Holly Marie (born on Halloween and has a bit of the devil in her) came to live with us. I have never been more in love! She is a giant PIA a lot of the time and I can't wait to get home to see her every day. Today we were hanging out in the garage playing fetch, eating shelled peanuts and bananas and it was the best. Heck I even bought a side car for her as I want her by my side.

From the bottom of my heart I am so sorry for your loss.

I'm very sorry.   Losing a loving pet like a good dog is a terrible thing.  The previous poster was spot on--these dang canines love too much and live too short.

So sorry for your loss.  Labs are the best dogs ever.  Three years after the loss of my 12 year old, 130 lb yellow lab I miss him every day.  Maybe some day I'll get another.  The pain of the loss recedes in time, but the memories remain as strong as ever.

I'm sad for you.  Labs are special.

My mom preferred labs for seeing eye dogs.  She wore out many.  One in particular, Lorene, was her favorite and also a remarkable dog with an understanding of her responsibilities.  She was on the docks headed for the boat one day and took a wrong turn.  The dog knew and finally physically blocked mom from proceeding.  Mom scolded the dog, and someone else on the dock promptly intervened -- mom's wrong turn had her one step away from stepping off the dock, and Lorene, understanding the danger, wasn't going to have that happen on her watch.

One day the guide dog lady came by and Lorene who was 15, knew what was up.  She hid from that woman like it was time to go to the vet.  The lady had another dog with her.  Lorene did everything she could to haze off her replacement, including wedging in to present herself for the harness.  She insisted on coming along on the training expeditions, even after she resigned herself to being off-duty.  One of the guide dog lady's duties was to return with the retiring dog to the old dogs home in Boring, Oregon.  She didn't have the heart to separate Lorene from mom.  We buried her at sea three years later.

So sorry to hear this, our pets stay with us too short of a time.

My vet told me that average age for a dog is 10 years. Anything above that is the dogs gift to the family. You received plenty of happiness with Hannah. Great looking doggie. May she play with our loved "T-bone" in doggie heaven.

Peace to Hannah and her pack.

Jas, so very sorry.  My wife and I have only become dog owners again in the last 6 years, me not having one prior to then except some 30 years ago when I was a teenager in the mountains.  These last six years of dog ownership have been nothing but blessed and they have become such a wonderful part of our lives and tough to imagine what it would now be like without them.  This thought makes me sad for your loss.  Peace.

Thank you all for all the support.

I missed this post first time around. I found the many supporting messages of commiseration from the Wildguzzi folks to be a great help.  I hope it helps you too.

Hannah looks as though she was a wonderful girl. You did the right thing to ease her suffering.

Sorry to hear about Hannah,
It took a long time to not expect to see our yellow labs head at the front window when we got home.  Those greetings from Billy are missed. It did not seem to matter if I was gone 10 minutes or 10 hours it was all the same to him.

Our Hannah was the same way.

It is weird coming home without that greeting.   This is the first time in 21 years that we've been without a dog.

I suspect that we'll get another within a few months.
