Headed to the Nationals, I thought I'd come from Red Lodge, Beartooth to Yellowstone.. never have gone that direction. Was planning on entering Yellowstone, doing a loop or so, camping one night, and exiting West gate headed to Idaho Falls.
Reading here, someone here.. forgotten who, sorry.. said the trip from Jackson through the Grand Tetons to Yellowstone was kool, and am wondering if I should ride to Jackson, then take 22, 31, 26 to Idaho Falls?
It looks like more fun.. but how much longer would it take?
Just trying to get a rough idea of timing to make it to the dance on time.. :smiley:

So you'd go from Red Lodge to Jackson and then to Idaho Falls? That would add about two hours vs Red Lodge to Idaho Falls. Maybe eight hours vs six. Very tasty ride though.

Only two hours? No brainer. I thought it might take a long time to go through the Grand Teton NP..

Chuck...I would traffic might be heavier on the weekends than a weekday if you can time it on your path thru there...getting thru Yellowstone all the way could be tedious if the RV traffic is bumper to bumper...but you could always exit out the West or East entrance and circle back around to Jackson from below and hit the Tetons from there...
See you at the Nationals or perhaps somewhere on the road there and back!

The plan is to get to Yellowstone on Monday, leave the general area Wednesday, make John Day Wednesday late or Thursday morning.

Up here we can tell bear poop from anything else because it has shiny bits of bells in it and smells like pepper.
Seriously though -- if you're riding the rockies for the sake of riding the rockies, take the longest way around. Folks are saying some route or another will add time and miles to the trip -- like that's a BAD thing. It's not bad. It's why you're there. Go long. Help yourself to the road not taken. Measure the trip in gas stops rather than miles and hours. . ..
I'm planning to come in from Whidby Island -- via Forks, Ocean Shores, Aberdeen, Astoria . . . .

Agreed, just didn't know how likely Dorcia is to get bogged down. She'll be driving the Transit pulling our motorcycle camper. I would think that Shirley I could get around bluehair jams with the bike without issue. Don't want to get so far behind we miss a day of the rally.

We're doing Yellowstone on the return trip, just in case we get bogged down in RV land.

I rode out the south entrance and down to Jackson for lunch one day in May 2003.
The Tetons are pretty spectacular. Jackson Lake. Snake River. Beautiful stuff.
US-191 is a nice two-lane blacktop, but pretty open once you leave Yellowstone.
The main attraction to this stretch of road is just constantly staring at the scenery to the west of the highway.
It's about 95 miles from Old Faithfull Inn to Jackson. On the whole, it's not going to add a lot of miles to the trip, and it will be a memorable couple of hours of your time.
Or, you could just watch the old movie "Shane"
