Well I am convinced if you own a Guzzi and live one hundred miles from your dealer you probably should own a motorcycle trailer to haul it with as well. If you've had my luck with Guzzi so far. I had nothing but trouble with the Norge I owned, it spent close to 5 months off and on in the shop last year. I traded for a 1400 touring in march. Properly broke the bike in. Had 1st service done. took it on first long day trip a couple of weeks ago, 532 miles. Next day cleaned it up. Today I take a ride, bike running great... Red Triangle warning light comes on as well as the all caps SERVICE comes on (no wrench icon). Still running great. returned home. Bike has 2295 miles on it. Oh well it is what it is. Gotta pay to have it hauled I suppose. Needless to say I ain't to happy but I'll live. I am starting to regret the day I traded my Harley, reason being I never had not one problem with it ever.
-
I would wait for a reply from Pete or Guzzisteve before getting too worked up . Alternatively , go back to HD if that makes you happy :thumb:

I love Guzzi's, both old and new, but just want to say there is NOTHING worse in this world than an unreliable motorcycle (any brand...) :embarrassed:
-
I live out in the sticks . Not going to own a bike I can't work on . New bikes have become too ' dealer friendly ' for me .

Thanks... I am just venting to hopefully ears that understand. I like guzzi I really do. But I will say this. I will see whats wrong first. But my patience level is thin. I wont be ugly or cuss people... nothing like that.

Pretty new bike right? You should have towing included with the purchase and the bike is under warranty.
No need for a trailer. Call the dealer, they can or should be able to make arrangements.
Unless you heard a grenade going off, more likely not a major problem.
-
My V7, bought end of last June:
-at 6000-ish km (end of August). Final drive shit the bed. Slinging oil everywhere. Total rebuild, took 6 weeks to get parts from Piaggio and have it rebuilt under warranty.
-the tech doing the rebuild left a spacer out of the rear-end, resulting in a cocked rear hub, back to be fixed... 3 weeks.
- mid April of this season, stopped at a red light, and my computer decided to forget it's mapping. Right pipe blued in seconds, burnt out cat, had to call Guzzi roadside. Back on the road quickly, though. Currently waiting for replacement muffler from Piaggio, they're dragging their ass.
Now sitting at 12,500 km, and have 13 months left on warranty. I plan on getting all the bugs out of it while they're paying for it. :)
Frustrating for sure, but I have to say, I still love the damn bike... but I'm not getting rid of my trusty, old SOHC CB750, just in case.

According to the manual, as long as the oil pressure indicator isn't lit, you should be able to ride it to the dealer. Any number of small problems could cause the fault indicator. And it doesn't even say "urgent service" from what you report. If you're uncertain, call the dealer and ask if it's ok to ride it in.
-
Yes, towing is included in the warranty if the bike was new.
Call the number they should've given you that covers breakdowns. No need to do it yourself.
-
Service warning alone doesn't mean the bike is about to have a meltdown. You get the same warning for any number of minor issues, as Larry said.
This is why I think every late model Guzzi owner should have GuzziDiag. You can check the error codes and decide then if it warrants a tow.
-
It could be anything from a blown indicator or dodgy oil pressure switch through to a demand sensor issue. The fact it hasn't seized solid would seem to indicate it's something fairly minor. Unfortunately I have no idea what. As Mark says best bet is to download Guzzidiag and check for errors.

I have had the same come on my Breva many times. It usually goes away if I shut it down and re start it, but not always. In my case I have come to the conclusion that it is nothing much, I think it is related to my aftermarket Mistral exhaust, so I just ride it!
-
in the menu there is a service menu, I suppose you can find errors there so you know what the bike thinks is wrong. The code it asks for is: 34534 to get in.
with that you can call the dealer to ask what they think, or call guzzi roadside direct.
-

Might consider an original v7 Sport
-
Mine fixed itself with a dose of 91 octane 100% gas.
-
In addition to warranty-paid towing, you get free towing with and American Motorcyclist Association membership.
Not that you SHOULD need it, but it's a nice benefit if/when you do.
-
I was never informed by dealer of Guzzi Roadside or even a number to call. That info is NEW news to me.

GUZZI Roadside????????? Was Never informed by Dealer not even on the PAIN in the @ss Norge I had before this bike.

Strange. My bike has a sticker on it with the number. I also got a letter and warantee wallet card in the mail several weeks after delivery.
I assumed it was after the dealer sent in the paperwork.
-
Moto Guzzi sends you a card with the number on it.
Just visit their website, Roadside Assistance is on the first page you see. Clicking on it with a smartphone calls them.
http://www.motoguzzi-us.com/mobile/site.html
The benefit is in their marketing materials too.
Used it several times, efficient, courteous and easy to use.

I purchased the Cal 1400 in March 2016, I haven't received anything from Moto Guzzi.
The Norge was purchased in March 2015, Never received anything at all from Moto Guzzi.

^ That is strange. I don't know who is to blame, your dealer or Piaggio.
We promptly received cards in the mail from Piaggio for both of our Moto Guzzis and both of our Vespas.

That bike would be a keeper in any case. I test rode one when I was in the market in 1970. There was a lot to like about it and it is something of a classic. (Though the BSA R3 won the competition hands down in my case. Wish I still had that too!)
-
Sounds like the dealer didn't send in the paperwork.

The info about Roadside Assistance was in a plastic bag that came with my V7 when I bought it in May. The bag had the owners manual, warranty info, spare key, "tool kit" and roadside assistance info. I would certainly check with your dealer if you did not get them.
-
Owner's manual ? Tool kit ? Uh oh
Dusty
-
OK, I'd consider another dealer.

I'm reminded of a story. A friends mother in law bought a Bug in the early 70s. A couple months later she takes it to the shop saying she was having a problem with the oil light. The tech checks the oil and there is none. He asks her about it and she said, "I need to check the oil? It's under warranty." She was a school teacher.
-
Who was the dealer in this concern?
-
Who was the dealer in this concern?
It was a VW shop in Windsor VT.
-
Or the guy who after spending a good sum of money repairing his new car was told it would have been covered under warranty whereupon he replied...
"Oh great, and how much does that cost?"

Unless someone knowledgeable says otherwise, try this. If your red triangle comes up while riding, reach out and turn off the key at highway speed, and keeping the bike in gear, allow it to mill over for a few seconds, then witout applying any throttle, flick the key back on. If the triangle goes away, it'll be ypur oil pressure sensor, an eady fix and make sure the wire clip is secure, I fixed mine and zip tied the wire to the switch to stop fatigue at the clip. That was 60,000 k ago on my '07 Norge.

I know they can give you the shits, but they're worth it! BTW, don't sell your trailer.....

I used to do service work for Sears Roebuck. I go to a brand new house and the owner works for Hewlett Packard in computers. His wife's parents were visiting them and his father-in-law points out the toilet by the front door is running. The computer guys says, 'I'll have to contact the home builder to fix that under warranty.'

It's a fair point you, make Arizona Wayne but I can't bring myself to laugh too loudly. I couldn't manage to load Skype on my computer without locking the whole damn thing up, but my toilet works well !!!!

That red motorcycle in the cartoon looks like a new Indian Scout. Check out the shape of the exhaust, engine, seat, rear fender, etc. Especially the exhaust...

I wonder if there's a trailer forum with trailers for sale or rent. I guess I'd better get one. Although I'm about 25 years late.
No phone, no pool, no pets. I ain't got no cigarettes!
-
If you're like me and have no use for, or storage space for a trailer, other than to occasionally haul bikes to/from the dealer, U-Haul has a very nice one that in my area rents for $14.95 a day. Front wheel chock, good tie downs, etc.
-
Thank you for posting your problems so politely and not just posting a rant ("worst motorcycle ever built, etc"). I have been fortunate with mine and had no problems but I feel for those who do especially living a distance from the dealer. Just getting the bike in is only half the problem because you won't know if you will be able to ride it home the same day. I do like to read about problems and especially how they were corrected but being a happy and satisfied owner, rants somehow just aggravate me, so thanks and let us know what happens next. I also recommend a U-Haul trailer.

Yep, U-Haul has motorcycle trailers that rent for $14.95 per day, or also a floored 4x7 ft. trailer that goes for the same price.
There are no extra charges or fees, and no mileage limitations. You can rent a trailer for 15 bucks a whole bunch of times before it would match the cost of buying or building a new one, and you don't need to store or maintain it!

Okay boys and girls, here is an update...
Friday 27th I made the decision to go ahead and ride the bike the 100 miles to the dealership because after reading some of the responses posted. Some time during the 1st 80 miles I lost head light and front running lights. Noticed this because of not seeing headlight reflection on cars in front of me. At about 80 miles a yellow light dash came on.. (looks the same as the red one that's already on). 90 miles into it another yellow dash light comes on (looks like ABS) meanwhile bike continued to run great. about 95 miles the speedo went crazy and showed 247MPH and stayed there. I am guessing ECU issues.
To the dealerships credit, they gave me a brand new (60 miles on it) Demo 2016 Yamaha FJ-09 with bags to ride till they sort out this problem.
So that's where I am at the moment. Thanks BK
-
No wonder it broke down. Who told you to ride the thing at 247mph?? sheesh
Sorry for the troubles Bobby - you are in the right place to help get them sorted out!
-
Good Dealer!

I don't want to get into an old vs. new discussion, but I have something like 55,000 miles on the Norge without much of any problem. Yeah, the final drive seal went about 30,000 miles ago, but the $15 bucks or whatever it cost me, is not breaking the bank.

Yeah, my 07 Norge.. oops.. maybe that's an old one, too.. was trouble free at 12 K miles, but it was just too top heavy for me. The 02 is just fine, as are the 87 and 82.
-
Yeah, mines is one of the bad 07 Norges.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I'll update when I can. BK

OK, the dash going mental is a good indicator of voltage drop.
My guess would be that yours may be one of the ones with the dodgy wiring to the alternator or the regulator may of gone tits. I sold a Cali 14 that shat its alt on the first ride the bloke took. It was charging fine when it left the shop but that weekend it died near Cooma.

UPDATE... Just heard from dealer...
Good Afternoon Bobby,
Nick has been able to get to the bottom of your trouble on the bike. It turned out to be a short at the rear fender area. It appeared as if something caused a wire to be worn thru and created a short. Nick repaired and checked it out good and all seems fine now.
We contacted MG and they will not cover the cost of repairs. They contend the bike has been overloaded and caused the rub thru.
Good new is the repairs are only about $130.00. We tried to get them to cover it but they say it has never happened before. Leah only charged for the tecs time actually used.
Thank You
I guess $130.00 is a small price to pay instead of sending my blood pressure through the roof. First warranty issue on this bike and was denied. NOBODY other than myself (255#) and no passengers. I guess 255 pounds some rain gear and a extra shirt or two, some wipe down cloths is overloading a califorina :thewife:
-
I think the bobbyfromnc is correct with the need of a trailer part. But that pretty much goes for any of the newer computer zoot bikes of any brand. Unfortunately it has become pretty much the same as getting into owning horses. The first thing to purchase is a pickup and a suitable trailer. Just the way it is. You either deal with it or move on to something else.

That is really bad form on the part of Moto Guzzi.

Makes me glad I still have my old bike. At least I know it inside and out.

Maybe you didn't have the preload on the rear shock set high enough and it bottomed out?
-
Even if it bottomed out it should not have hurt anything. Especially wiring.
-

Amen to that! Bobby- That is pretty lame that they (Piaggio and dealer) put you on the hook for it. Especially after what you've been through and still bought another Guzzi!

Yamaha had a 5 year unlimited mileage warranty on the Royal Stars. Bike never let me down once.
-
"We contacted MG and they will not cover the cost of repairs."
I had two warranty claims with the Norge, rotors and cracked fairing. Both were denied by Piaggio but MPH told me they would re-submit the claim because that was typical of MG, so they sent in the claim again and both were approved.
I'd ask the dealer to re-submit the claim or explain how an overloaded bike could cause this problem.

Maybe the implication that manufacturers are more willing to provide longer warranty periods on things that they are willing to bet will last longer without requiring large numbers of warranty repairs?

OK , but didn't we have a very similar discussion recently and form a consensus that Moto Guzzi isn't Yamaha , or Honda ?

I have no idea what consensus was reached, if any.
Hell, I don't even recall the discussion; I guess it didn't have much entertainment value

UPDATE... Dealer has sent e-mail to their sales rep to try to run intervention on this. Dealer knows it's BS because one of the salesmen at dealership had the same thing to happen to his 1400 Cal so it's not a new thing and that I did not overload the bike. I am guessing a Monday or a Friday on the Italian assembly line.
I went a head and paid the $130.00 while they sort this out. I told them if Guzzi comes through give me a credit on my 6200 mile service. We shook hands and I picked up the Cal Saturday am. I rode the bike 320 miles this past Saturday. Machine performed flawlessly. :thumb:

I'm currently having problems with my Stelvio which has been on going now for a month or more and prior to owning it I've had problems with a new Griso . It's a dysfunctional relationship and I keep coming back for more . I guess it's the price I pay for owning a very unique motorcycle .
Lots of help here on this website though , which I can't say enough about . Hope you find the problem quickly .
Cheers ,

I tried to get my money back on an AMC Pacer. The dealer asked why, pointing out that it needed to be a warranty issue. I said on account of it was so ugly I had to sneak up on gas pumps in the middle of the night to fill it up and it was really disruptive to both my travel and my sleep. He said "Sorry, That's not covered -- they all do that."
