Title: First ride, loop project, more info and photos
Post by: ratguzzi on May 27, 2016, 09:29:15 AM
Got the project running and went for a ride. Motor is the 98 EV motor that was in my raT-3 linked up to a 4 spd. Points and carbs. Started right up after a couple years of sitting. Idles perfect, pulls strong.
Took a few laps around the block to get the right side shift to feel natural again.

Simply beautiful!  Some gray ammo cans would look great on it too :)

So, how do the mufflers work?  Quiet, loud, in between?  I need some quieter ones for my raT5

I like it. Always good to see  parts becoming a living breathing bike.  :thumb:

John, that is just too cool-looking...I like the military styling...you should research old photos of military bikes and keep it low-key and understated....just my 2-cents...

Lovely, John. The steampunk crowd has a lot to learn from you.

I just bought and got it how I like it, V7 Stone, and since I dragged this loop out and finished it, I have no desire to ride anything BUT it! I have clocked over 100K on loops and it's been a long time since I rode one. Yeah, the anti lock brakes are scary but.............

Hey Steve,
cool to hear from you! You worked on the raT3 when it had a mere 30K on it. I since tore it down with over 400k on it.

JB, I'm not sure that C channel that you mounted the bottom of the ammo can is going to be a strong enough cross section, have the proper modulus of elasticity or yield strength.  :thumb:

He's probably just using them cause they were still attached after being on his raT3 :)

Can you explain to me your ignition setup? I bought an "Ambo" or most of an Ambo. The engine needs to gone thru. It might be cheaper to use a 1100 motor. Thanks for any help.

Basically, 98 EV motor with dual points (maybe last year motor with the distributor hole still in it, must machine out the inner casting) and round slide carbs, 68 maybe 4 spd. New heavy ambo/eldo flywheel, Ford tractor mufflers.  Every wire connection is soldered and shrink fit over it. I had issues with rear brake light switches in the past grounding out so this one is isolated from the frame and I added a nylon piece for the plunger to go up against. My friend Frank machined the frame adapters, I was told they can break easily so I added a pipe between them for the main frame bolt to keep the flexing to a minimum.

I need to add progressive fork springs to stiffen up the front end a little.

It's meant to be a reliable rat.

Now's time to rattle can all those pretty wires grey.  We wouldn't want any "lipstick" on this rat.

It's funny, with all the false-start pandering to "retro" bikes from the manufacturers, this is the kind of thing that they should be conceptualizing!

That is so cool... I would weld the exhaust after the 1st clamp, and use a modern flat-wide clamp up front. The fusebox location is perfect, it's what we did on Chris's V65.

You think the muffler clamps take away from the sleek lines of the bike?
It would be nice to weld them up. There's a local guy by me that may weld me up a special cross over.
