did exactly what i tried not to do, managed to drop my 3 rings off the bench. 79 v1000 g5. can't tell which was is up on the rings nor which was on top, all the profiles look the same no matter how hard i look at them. they have approx 26k miles on them. does it matter how they are place back onto the piston?
thx

Yes. Top ring should be chrome assuming cast iron bore, second ring ring is a torsional taper-face semi scraper and should have a slight step on one side, the step goes towards the skirt of the piston. Oil ring is almost certainly ambi-sidestrous. Is it one piece or three piece?

I am unable to form an amusing comment regarding trying putting the piston in upside down, but if I come up with one I'll let you know.

installing the piston upside down would be funny if at all possible

so i found my magnifying glass to actual see these closely. the top ring has printing on one side by the gap, i assume this is the top. the second ring has a step, i assume this is the bottom and the oil ring also has printing on one side by the gap, i also assume this is the top. am i correct in these assumptions? and yes, i know about assuming (have seen that odd couple episode multiple times)
thx
