Title: WG is a gentleman's forum
Post by: oldbike54 on June 01, 2016, 11:50:58 AM
Well , at least we want to project that to anyone reading the board  Have recently had to clean up some language here , specifically the F word and all of the ways it can be conjugated , modified , used as a noun , a verb , an adjective , etc . Just a reminder , there are ways of expressing strong sentiment W/O resorting to language that most of us would not use in front of our mothers  Heck , send me a PM with every known expletive , even invent a few , we can have a good laugh , and maybe a competition around who can be most creative     However let's remember to be gentleman and ladies in public . We never know who is reading . Thanks .

Are you sure it isn't time for a colorful metaphor?

Well then, I guess one could always conceal epically poor manners, rage and slanderous retort in idiomatic colloquialisms. :boozing:

I kinda like to use applied scenarios in a lot of instances where modified behavior is beneficial. For instance, to drive any four-wheeler as though I can only expect the acceleration of my diesel 3/4 ton keeps me from entering into potentially embarrassing behavior elsewhere... Driving as though I have all the dogs in the car returns the same rewards in braking and cornering.

Writing in general and implied intimacy conversations in particular - I find it best to behave as though most anyone else might be physically in front of me for the reactions my conduct may induce.

Forums like this, I generally like to assume that my; Wife, Grandmother and an old "Rabi" would have access to the written thoughts.

Other internet scenarios, being very, very closed and populated by a particular bent of fellas - I'll communicate as I would in the Team Room in the Army and offense taken is offense interpreted. Those scenarios, I won't be held accountable for your "feeling" and in turn will take my own lumps; literal and figurative.

If policing is required - what the hell, it keeps Dusty off the streets... So there's that and his community can thank us!

Well , there is that Todd

Todd's post does mention a couple of salient points . One , there are all kinds of internet forums where anything goes , and usually does . They can be fun if you remember that most inhabitants of those places will never ever meet face to face . We tend to gather up at rallies and camp outs , and certain ether space behavior just might lead to a good whacking . Second , I know several folks that only lurk on WG , some for the humor , some for entertainment . Women , a couple of young folks , even my 72 year old sister and an ex GF read WG on occasion because both think the humor is , well, humorous

Yeah, OK, guilty as charged. Generally I try to abide by the limited strictures of WG and accept that there are some who are offended by a good dose of the 'Vernacular' and I generally also try not to offend.

Sometimes I get a few beers in me and my conduct slips. I apologise to those I offend. It isn't intentional and I realise that some are easily offended or upset. It's not my intention.

You know Pete, I don't think any of this was actually leveled at you.

For the most part your colourful descriptions of the the human state are not generally leveled toward a specific person on the board and manages to remain pretty much on the right side of actual foul language. Well, nearly always, and you obviously try. Difficult sometimes I'm sure.

(How are you getting on with that stuff for me?)

People should be judged by what they do and not what they say... However , if you break a part on your bike by stupidity one F word is far more descriptive  than a " gosh darn it". In fact there's too much flowery time wasting worded talk  that can be replaced by a simple profanity..
Remember gents, ear plugs and blindfolds on your wife and kids so they won't be offended by reality...better to be a stuffy old fart than a colorful old fart   Oh, can we say fart ???

color and character are as appreciated in banter as they are in our bikes.

I'm reminded of Chucks comments in the "appliance" thread, where he states he'll take the Guzzi motor over the Scorpions "better" Yamaha because of intangibles. Language is the same. I certainly recognize it can go too far.

Hmm, well Dusty old man.

I went to the Colorado School of Mines.  Known for creative swearing.  Took me years to adjust.  Remember a Christmas at parents of best friend in Los Altos, CA.  Said:  "pass the +ucking butter".  Did not go down too well with his mother.  His dad, a Stanford grad, locked eyes with me, then spewed in a doubled over laugh.

Yet, I get you.

Then again I have this black T-shirt.  Love the saying.  Saw original in movie about young lady in Sweden.  Will leave it at that.  Have never worn the shirt in public though....gives me a grin in my closet though.  Merde....

This is pretty much what I would tell my pupils in school.  The "Think of a good insult instead" would have been a nice addition but I did used to add that it showed an inability to use language.

At one point in my life I was driving a school bus from Bluff to Invercargill. Bluff is a port. I suspect ports are the same everywhere. The the air in the bus tended to be distinctly blue. The kids, mostly high school age,  I was carrying were not renown for a co-operative attitudes nor for their inclination to listen to adults.

I put a sign up in the bus which in large letters said;

"Foul language does for the ear pretty much what a dead sheep does for the nose"

While some of the kids had trouble understanding the message, and asked me about it, it made a surprising difference.

I think when it comes to the use of language we have to consider where we are. A forum is not a private conversation. It is an extremely public one.  It's hard enough to circumvent cultural differences without throwing foul language into the pot.

Well said Sir!

As a member of this community, and we certainly are a community with ties much deeper than our love of the quirky Italian motorcycles we ride,  we should always keep in mind that use of foul language, derogatory terms, or insults reflects on us as individuals and as a community.

As my dear Mother would have said, "use your company manners."

 Weird bate-headed mongrels
I keep expecting one of you to rise
 Large buxom obese queen
 Garden hogs and cunt veterans
 Quaint cabbage saints
 Shit hoarders and individualists
 Drag strip officials
 Tight lipped losers and
 Lustful f*** salesman
 My militant dandies
 All strange orders of monsters
Hot on the tail of the woodvine
We welcome you to our procession

Here come the Comedians
 look at them smile
Watch them dance an Indian mile
 Look at them gesture
 How aplomb
 So to gesture everyone
 Words dissemble
 Words be quick
 Words resemble walking sticks
 Plant them they will grow
 Watch them waver so
I'll always be a word man
 Better then a bird man

From American Prayer

Didn't recognize/remember this from the doors till the bottom note. As reading it - I assumed it was Charles Bukowski but then, there're too many words. :boozing:

Well Danish is incomprehensible in any case.
You never know if they're swearing or not!

You highlight the censored word, but the uncensored C U Next Tuesday remains?

At least we don't sound like this: yydyy byydyy børk børk.

Two Norwegians got trouble with their car. The lights didn't work. They stopped, and one of them told his friend to check if the blinker worked. The friend went out and said:
- It works... It doesn't work... It works... It doesn't work... It works... It doesn't work...

How do you sink a Norwegian submarine?
- Dive down and knock at the door. Then they'll open the door and ask what you want!

- How do you sink a Norwegian submarine again?
- Dive down and knock at the door. Then they'll open the door and say: "You can't fool us again!"

- How do you sink a Swedish submarine?
- Dive down and knock at the door. Then they'll open a window and say: "We're not as stupid as the Norwegians!"

- How do you sink a Danish submarine?
- Give it a Norwegian crew!

Ikke sannt min ven?

;)

Gentlemen, ahhemmm... I say, GENTLEMEN - please do refrain from poking the bear, bears, bear-like entities and even those who may merely smell like bears... or wallabies as it were. :boozing:

Nothing like North and West of here.  Brazos R. flooding at historic levels.  Several towns evacuated.  Colorado, Trinity and San Jacinto R.
not far behind.  Nine soldiers swept away, likely drowned, at Ft. Hood.  Most of rain East of that area now, thank God.

Would enjoy a few sunny days so I could go for a ride and mow the lawn.
