Title: sachse ignition
Post by: lazlokovacs on June 02, 2016, 04:25:47 AM
anyone fitted one of these? ZDG3

the sachse disc doesnt clear the bosch brush holder unless I shim it substantially.... doesn't seem right to me...

anyone else had this?

Lemans 1000

thanks

What are you wanting to achieve by this mod?

replacing the stock contact breakers that cannot be properly set up.

what am I wanting to achieve? accurate ignition timing, no re-gapping of the points every couple of months, cursing because they cannot be advanced or retarded enough to maintain the specified dwell.

that kind of thing...

the sachse so far (1000+ miles) seems to perform these jobs admirably. However, as stated in the OP, I have to shim it quite a bit to get the disc to clear the brush holders, which doesn't seem right to me... means you then have to shim the alternator cover to clear the disc which leaves a fair gap which again doesnt seem right...

IMHO the points work fine you just time them ignoring the dwell and gap. As long as the wretched thing gets adequate spark at the right time who cares?

Having said that if you want to avoid the hassle of fiddling once in a while why not try a Dyna rather than one of these fancy and very expensive systems? Just make sure your battery is up to snuff!

In a lot of ways fancy ignition systems are a sort of dinosaur equivalent of modern junk like Power Commanders. Yes they can be useful if you are chasing the very 'Ad Ultra' of performance but in reality unless you're on the track and chasing milliseconds you won't notice a blind bit of difference.

I Have it on my SPIII with a set of bobbin style coils.
It works!!! Money well spent
I run platinum plugs that never foul and last 25K kms.
It has wasted spark which helps keep the plugs much cleaner and the coils run much, much cooler as the dwell is perfect all the time. Idle is greatly improved as the lash in the distributor is eliminated.
You can also look at this http://www.cajinnovations.com/MyECU/MyIgn.html (http://www.cajinnovations.com/MyECU/MyIgn.html) if you want to keep the distributor.
I use this guys ECU in my Centauro, it works much better than the original.

pete - thanks for the info. quick follow up question, when the bike is in gear and running does the crank (and therefore the alternator rotor) come forward a bit? If it does, that could make things a bit easier in terms of clearance....

adam flangeman- I've been running it for over a thousand miles and I like it... Does your disc comfortably clear the brushes on your alternator? its awfully tight on my bike...

thanks all

I have the ZDG3 but with the diode reg/rec board too, the PUReg. This is the same system but with a different board for the triggers that mounts to the stator. Mine just went straight on but as I said different board.

I've probably done around 4K miles on it and have never had to touch it, IMHO its a very good system.

You can see it briefly in this video in action

Cliff Jefferies My Ign is a good alternative if wanting to keep the points as posted earlier

Another not so well known box is the Ingni Tech

Found a picture of it off the bike when I was installing. My only complaint is it may make replacing brushes a tad more complex, but I can live with that
