Title: Starter-03 EV
Post by: Wild Bill Guzzi on June 02, 2016, 08:37:23 AM
I need a starter for my 2003 EV.  Is there anything I need to know before I purchase one?  Where is a good source to buy one?

The original Valeo starter is rebuildable too. Follow that EuroMotoElectrics link for parts.

Euromoto  electrics is good, I bought a starter and parts to rebuild the Valeo so I could slap one in and have one on the shelf ready

Clean and grease before you replace it.  The planetary gears are probably greaseless.

There are valeo and valeo clones.  The clones are awful.

*shrug* I have one of theirs failing in my 'vert right now.  They don't personally build them.  I don't think we can hold them responsible for failing starters.

What makes the starter whine?

What makes the starter whine?

Maybe because the Valeo is a gear-reduction starter?

There is a plate to keep dust out of the magnets (my guess). It is pressed in and I have seen them come loose. Mine has been loose for a year or three. You hear it spin after you release the button. Too lazy to take apart and fix it. Maybe next year.

If I do nothing to the starter, what eventually will happen?  I want to be clear on one thing, is the screeching noise coming from the starter gear contacting the flywheel?

Screeching is usually a lack of lubrication. A good indicator that you should pull it and give it a once over. Mike

Mine screeches in cold weather.  Not so much in warm weather.
