EDIT: I hope it's not deceptive marketing, or worse to repurpose this thread, but in the interest of pixel & bit conservation...I'd hope to find the rectangular one (Cali II or III ?) but I guess should buy whatever I can find - if you've got one or a clever idea your counsel appreciated.
Thanks all for your counsel regarding yesterday's spill in the parking lot - I'll not be pursuing compensation from the trigger driver's insurance, since damage is minimal and my legal position is weak.
Before I left for work this morning I removed the highway peg/bar that so bravely gave it's best to protect the bike. I have not yet decided on appropriate honors for it - It was but a simple piece of metal, but it selflessly sacrificed so that other (more expensive) parts of the bike could live.
And when I removed the sturdy soldier from it's post, I learned that there's a BIG FREAKING HOLE IN THE FRAME where it mounts, with a corresponding spacer/washer doodad, that appears to have also deformed in the moment that the bar took the hit.
They were Harpers Highway Pegs and Mounts 01 1081 - What did the bike have plugged in that tooth socket when it left the factory?
In this thread http://wildguzzi.com/forum/index.php?topic=68828.0 crash bars for the Bassa are discussed - I seem to recall that a rectangular one from another model (Cali III ?) that I like the look of also fits the Bassa.
Your valuable counsel is appreciated.

Don't have that model or highway pegs. Pics would be helpful.

Norm , were they mounted where the frame is designed to split ?

-
Lemme guess...I have the alternate universe model Bassa. That would explain a lot.
Okay, I don't have any pics at the moment, but just to confirm, in this universe, Patrick Hayes is a highly respected specialist in the field of quantum mechanics, and Dusty is a retired counsellor of the Multiverse Investigation Bureau - correct? Because if not, then my worst fears are confirmed - I have slipped again.
-
Still on the meds? Describing the doodad is probably more productive than describing the alternate universe.
I suspect what you're looking at is the lower front crash bar mount hole and the spacer from the crash bar is being used to position the highway peg. Was there an odd flat nut with a 19mm head holding it in place?
-
Norm , yes you may have slipped into a different universe than ours , extensive testing completed just before I retired from MIB indicates some cross communication is likely , in fact WG is the most efficient conduit for said communication . That becomes obvious if you read enough of the activity here
Or , we could just be having a Green Acres moment

in this Tonti/Cali universe....I believe this is the most common configuration of which you speak....no?

Probably so Kid , Norm is this it ? Oh Norm , where fore art thou Norm ? Anyway , that is where the lower frame rails attach to the front down tubes , fairly important .

Thanks Dusty - Yeah, that's it. The Bassa has the peg support going into that location where the crash bar is mounted in your picture.
Looks like when I buy the crash bar I'll have to pull the pipes to install it. What damn fool came up with that idea?
I swear, they'll let anybody be a design engineer these days...
So what other useful tasks can be accomplished while the pipes are off, other than the obvious sending them out to be ceramic coated, which I (red suspender moment here) don't really want to do, when a rattle can of high heat white/gray/black will serve.
Can I port and polish the exhaust pipe exits from the head? What about putting deer whistles in the pipes?
-
If I remember correctly it's a M12 x 50 socket head cap screw but that might be too long. There's a big hex nut on the back that's a real pain to get to.

I think there is wiggle room. If not, taking off one pipe should be enough.
-
 Grease the header bearings  Seriously , a bit of high temp grease where everything mates together can't hurt , like where the headers enter the mufflers , etc . AND , it probably isn't necessary , but since you are already pulling the pipes , a good time to retorque the heads . Of course some would suggest my head needs , well , you get the idea ...
Oh , thank Kidsmoke for the pic , I just appropriated it for my own glory

Why?
A little maneuvering and the crash bar will go right on, without removing anything...

Don't confuse him Mike , maybe Norm just wants the experience  Yes , no need to pull the headers , unless my first assessment is correct ...

KidSmoke: That is one beautiful Jackal!!!!!
Apologies to the OP for bumping the thread but I just had to comment.
-
Hey, is this well worn piece a fit for the Bassa ? It kinda looks like it would be...
http://www.ebay.com/itm/moto-guzzi-crash-bars-/231849222992?hash=item35fb4a6350:g:ew4AAOSwB4NWxUUM&vxp=mtr
Put some of that exhaust pipe wrap stuff on it and it's good to go.
-
I vaguely remember seeing a set like that. Notice the lower attachment. Different from the Jackal mount above. Might be for a small block.

V65c, maybe others as well.

Hmmm, you're right. Dammit...
Last time I wanted to buy a crash bar, I ran out of money.
Today I have both money and motivation. I prefer the rectangular look, but I guess if I was clever I'd mount anything there and call it clever. The money will only last so long - and you know what the Furry Freak Brothers said.

My bikes wear their bruises like badges of honor. I even put a bullet hole sticker over one of them.

Hmm...I am going to try polishing compound on the fairing mar, but I like your approach.

" And I'm gettin' old " (cue harmonica)
-
One of the all-time best harmonica songs, ever.
I'll trade you my square crash bar for your leading link front forks.
No, seriously. I will. Straight across. You don't even have to add cash.
-
What makes this a truly great deal is that unlike all the other offers for trades in this topic, I actually possess the crash bar under discussion. It's not one of those "Send me your leading link forks and then I'll check my stash and see if I have the crashbar" sorts of deals that you normally see offered in these situations. I can dig it out of a tote in under a half hour. How can you lose? :thumb:

normzone, did I miss pics of said damage somewhere else? The jackal pictured above took about a 20 yard skid down a highway a few weeks back. Ground off a good 3/16" of steel, but they didn't bend at all. The highway pegs, also pictured, also lost a bit of skin and did bend just a tad, but the rest of the bike did fine, barely even a scratch...all to say, they work. And well. I'd not consider another set up after what I experienced. Simply cant be improved upon, IMHO.
Good luck in your quest.
Oh, and Red Dog, thank you kindly. I'm rather fond of it myself.
-
Nah, no pics yet - life is too busy.
So is this squaretangular crash barre I seek made of unobtanium? Searches in the USA make it appear so. Do I need to ask [Daniel Kalal] to bring one back from the factory for me?
-
Thanks [JNMathews], that is the one. I just came from a google image search to confirm.
I remember seeing one of those at Sonny Angels in National City in the eighties, and my dumb self thinking " who would ever want that kind of bike ? ".
Memo to self: Kick self when I get home - they're beautiful. I was just accustomed to my stripped down Eldo.
-
Hmmm, you're right. Dammit...
you know what the Furry Freak Brothers said.
No I don't but Fat Freddy's cat caped in my shoe once. :undecided:
-
The big square ones are more associated with floorboards and the diamond ones with pegs, but it's not a hard and fast thing. Sometimes I think they just grab the next object in the bin and slap it on.
No, they come up from time to time -- you just need to watch for them. A lot of folks think the bar makes the bike ugly and remove/sell in pristine condition, or the bike is being parted out for some reason other than a crash and the bar comes up as perfect or slightly rashed but not bent. So it will be a crime of opportunity.

The Furry Freak Brothers believed that " dope will get you through times of no money, better than money will get you through times of no dope.

I dunno, don't some of the aircraft guys here have birds made of " rope and dope " ?
So the clever money says when I get my next check I buy the crash bar I don't want, if I can find it, to tide me over until/if I find the crash bar I want.

Normzone, these what you are looking for?

[Turin], I'm going to have to respond with a resounding...duh, mebbe ?
I'm not sure what the mounting config on that front crash bar is as compared to what my bike will take.

Great comic book loosely base on several hippies in Austin.
Freewheeling Franklin was a thinly viewed caricature of Jim Franklin an artist/illustrated who did posters for the Vulcan Gas Company (music venue) and later the Armadillo World Headquarters. Gilbert Shelton the Freak Brother's creator worked with Jim at the Vulcan.
BTW Jim was from Galveston.
Before my time in Austin, but part of the oral history passed down to us new arrivals during the seventies.

[Turin], the floorboads look like mine before the PO recovered them in doormat secured with sheet metal screws.
Those black painted tin bits look like the chrome ones I took off and maybe still have in the closet.
So there's some definite Bassa in the batch.

There weren't none 'o them there hippies in Texas Dave , come on now
