Minnesota rally at the Grand Marais rec park on June 17-19! Pulled pork supper Friday night and fresh Lake Superior herring dinner Saturday night. Extra cool riders arrive Thursday!
-
{moving separate post here} It's next week already. The bike is ready to go (except for replacing the throttle side handgrip), I have a very nice bottle of bourbon ready to pack (couldn't find any Grappa). Tomorrow going out to the storage room to dig out camping gear. I am really looking forward to this, I *need* it. It will be great to see everyone. If anyone is riding up from/through Sioux Falls let me know, perhaps we can form a gaggle.

Bring your warm sleeping bag or you might be "extra cool"!
-
Yes, the weather in June is very unpredictable up here, so be prepared for just about anything!
-
My pre-registration has been sent in. I'm looking forward to being in Grand Marais again. Yes, it's going to be cool. Yes, it's probably going to rain. But, the rally is a really nice event and the fresh fish eating is great.

Well POOP!! I had my calendar confuse and was all ready to ride up this week, but it's NEXT week! Smooshed my own butterfly..
This is sorta like thinking it was Christmas and finding out it's only a little after Halloween!!
-
What? Is no one else excited about this rally?
-
Just checked the long range weather forecast. Looking very good for that weekend, temps in the 50's to mid-70's and not too much chance for rain. We're having 94 today in mid-IN. Looking forward to a nice cool time up north.
Leaving here Monday and taking the slow route through the UP to the rally. Probably arrive on Thursday after a stop at Aerostitch to see what they have that I can't do without.
-
What plans to you Thursday arivee's have? Will it be possible to camp in the rally camping area a day early? should I call or reserve something with someone?
-
Upper Superior Brewing still there?
-
If there are more than seven tents, group camping rate of $7 applies Thursday night in the group camping area. I will be one! No need to call or reserve.
-
There is a new brew pub just down the road, Voyaguer. Also have two kegs of Lienies for the campground....

Thanks.. I will be #2

Mary and I are packing the bikes. We're going up to Ely for Thursday night in the wild, and looking forward to a leisurely ride through the woods to the Rally Fri sometime. Looking forward to the ride and rally, see you all there.
-
I'll be there Friday - late morning or around lunch time (weather permitting).
GuzziDoo - save me a good spot with your tarp. The Crown Royal is already packed for JU.

Weather permitting???? Are you pedaling your bicycle up? Friday they are saying full sun 70 degrees in Grand Marais... (No pirate gear will get wet)
-
The north house folk school wooden boat show is also happening rally weekend for any nautically inclined folks. It's right next to the campground and next to the dockside fish market.

The Rally shirts have arrived!!! :thumb:

Most likely a bit cooler by the lake, but still looking good! Getting the rain over with today.

Deb and I are coming.
Tom, The light will be on for you!
-
A how I hate the night before a trip. I know just what will happen. I will get home, get all packed, then go to bed and stare at the ceiling until it is time to go, thinking of things I didn't pack and occasionally getting up to add a little something until my baggage weighs more than the bike.
Then I'll get up at the appointed time, ride until I get sleepy and stop at a rest stop for a nap.
I would probably be ahead of the game just to leave as soon as I am done packing and stop somewhere for a good sleep.

Pseudo spam -- I ended up with an extra tent. I am planning on returning one to Amazon. If someone were desperate for a tent (with a garage) at the rally I could possibly figure out how to tie it on and bring it with me, but only if you promise I wouldn't have to bring it back. $140.

Any reports/pics from Duluth? I was unable to go. It looked like perfect weather!
-
I doubt it, the rally was in Grand Marias
in Duluth more than 7,500 people raced the Grandma's Marathon.. won by Elisha Barno M 2:11:26
W Elisha Barno 2:33:28
-
I was lost again Brad, wonder how the weather was, I kept checking the Duluth weather but I think it may have stormed in Grand Marais.
-
Right now it's 88f in Duluth and 64 in GM. Bet it's a beautiful ride down the N shore till you hit Duluth.
I didn't make it this year either.. See you at Elkader?
-
Yep I'm hoping to make it to Elkader, got some health issues getting in the way so can't say for sure yet.
-
Weather was very good. Just a few short sprinkles Saturday evening, rest was dry and cool.
-
And a good time was had by all. Whoever planned that perfect weather could you call in some clouds for the rest of my ride home now?
For those of you who helped me out with my battery troubles many thanks again. I did get to a parts store in Duluth and the Norge has a brand new battery and is behaving herself again. :bike-037:
Of course all they had that would fit was a $250 size 7 lithium, but beggars can't be choosers. I'll just have to be careful not to run this one down so it doesn't blow up while I'm sitting on it. :lipsrsealed:
-
Well, a third of the way home the sheriff chased me down and made me go indoors. Rotations and tornadoes in SW mn.
-
I only stayed Friday night and pulled out around noon on Saturday. Weather was nice but a bit on the chilly side Friday night. Great dinner on Friday night!

first time I ever had a cop tell me to take a break from driving and go sit in a bar.. lol

Great rally!
Talked to a lot of cool people, seen some sweet bikes, hit some nice roads and ate some absolutely fantastic food.
The blow-out in Solon Springs on the spoked front wheel at 65mph wasn't fun but hey, can't get everything.
Next year I'll make room for a spare tube and some tools.

what's the rest of the story? how far did you have to ride the tow? why were you in Solon Springs? W35 is more pleasant than 53 (for me anyway).
Elkader is near your own backyard, going?

I probably wouldn't have been on 53 if I hadn't been running late. I generally ride secondary roads or whatever gravel I can find. I did portions of 35w on the way back home. The crosswinds on 53 was absolutely horrible on Sunday.
The tube blew on Hwy 53 just a few hundred yards north of the Dollar General store. Next to that was an LP gas dealer. An employee there took the time out to help me which was very, very cool. I bought her lunch at a local bar while we waited for the tow.
I was carrying extra gear for the rally so I gambled and left all my tools and spare tubes at home. Murphys Law finally caught up to me.
The tow was to Superior to a place called "Color and Chrome". It was an indy cycle shop that seemed to specialize in H-D. Despite being Friday afternoon and swamped with carry-in rims needing tires for the weekend, they got a new tube installed while I waited. Very cool of them to do that for me. Good people.

I'll consider hitting Elkader. It's less than two hours south of me. I really need a Guzzi shirt.

Doug Cooper put together an excellent photo essay of the rally

NICE! I'll be up there in July.
-
Nice pics!
-
The one thing I wanted to do but didn't accomplish was to revisit Kevin's collection up on the hill.
Next time!
We really did have fun, didn't we??
-
John, it was a damn hot weekend, killed 5-6 people (unlike a normal year it went from real warm to GD Hot! ASAP which I think messed with judgement calls). I'd like to move out of here in the summer - if not full time.
Hit Man; some nice shots there. Thanks for sharing.
Anyone eat at Sven and Oli's Pizza? I jut realized, I have not been to Grand Marias for about 30 years. I think the last time I was there I was on a date with the gal I ended marrying.
-
Just to be clear, I don't blame Grand Marias for the marriage.
-
Those are nice pics, gotta get up,there some day. Damn job
-
great place. I wanna go back.
-
good memories.
went there after Elkader National.

Come over next June 23-24 for a trip down memory lane. Sven & Oli's is still there. :food:

May have to do that. Bring the family up in the truck then bike up the shore while they do the family thing. Kill two birds with one stone.

Just arrived home yesterday afternoon after 2450 total miles. I spent two nights with my older sister on Washington Island, WI. That was very nice and worth the effort to get there. I had not seen her for a few years.
Once again, the rally was great. Kudos to those involved. It is always nice to see my riding friends. It looks like they are all doing pretty well.
John has already scheduled the event for next year. I'll try and make it again, a really good event.
-

Had to up my game.
We have a saying in the Minnesota MGNOC: 'There's Nice, then there's JU Nice'....
Everything about the rally was 'JU Nice'. Had to deliver what I could.
