Here's my baby.

A 2001 California Jackal.
I also have a Bellagio which I've converted into a cafe racer.

I put K&N pod filters on the Bellagio "Evoluzione" 940 Cafe Racer and was so happy with them that I put the same filters on my Jackal.
The induction roar on the Bellagio with the K&N's is awesome, but not so loud on the Jackal. It's more of a growl as you don't need to rev/change gears so often.
Anyways,........ My Jackal has always farted, burped and backfired, (even before the pod filters.)

Occasionally, it takes a lot of convincing to start and does a shotgun backfire through the exhausts. Really gets the neighbour's attention.
It has always/occasionally been reluctant to start, sometimes backfiring. Since fitting the K&Ns, it hasn't changed it's ways, though on two occasions the backfire when trying to start hs resulted in the injectors being blown out of the inlet manifolds when it has backfired through the filters.
It runs exactly the same as when it had the airbox, beautifully, even a bit smoother when cruising, but when it doesn't want to start straight away, hot or cold, it backfires through the pipes or filters.
Anyone else out there had their injector bodies blown off by a backfire? I tell you, it's a real pain putting them back on, on the roadside using a small coin as a screwdriver on the manifold clamps. (I'm going to get in the habit of carrying screwdrivers from now on.)
I always assumed the reluctant starting was due to the Jackal's Guzzi "Character" but the (only) other Jackal owner in Singapore says he has no trouble starting his bike. EVER. :embarrassed:
Occasionally, my Jackal will start up straight away, sometimes I have to hold the starter button for 20 - 30 seconds. Sometimes when it takes a long time to fire up it backfires like a shotgun through the exhaust, sometimes through the filters, sometimes the starter slows to a crawl and then refuses to turn the engine over, sometimes I hit the start button and all the dash lights go off and not a sound is heard from the relays OR the starter motor. My mechanic suggests it may be the starter motor, so I bought a new OEM Valeo starter which is in transit. Hopefully it reduces the number of starting problems.
Could the coils be a problem? I've replaced the fading rectifier and dead battery, but even so, when the starter turns quickly, sometimes the motor doesn't fire up and BANG !
any ideas?
Bob.

Find the person that spent all of the time making modifications to the bike, and have them do a valve adjust, throttle body sync, and TPS set.
Edit.....
And on the motor doesn't start, then bang, replace the spark plugs too.

Yep, tune that poor thing up.
Now, it's the boots that are blown off the manifolds, right? Not the injectors blown off the manifold?
I had an 02 Stone, same basic machine, started and ran very well. Had 1 backfire through the intake once, blew off the boot.
Set the specs on the poor machine, it's talking to you. When it's done, you will REALLY like it.

The injector bodies (One side each time) were blown out of the rubber intake manifolds connected to the aluminium intake manifords. It was a bugger to push them back in and tighten the screws on the clamps with a 10 cent coin.

My Jackal starts when I hover my thumb over the starter button. Don't even have to actually press it, it knows whats next and springs to life. (which is to say it starts immediately, no repetitive cranking necessary) Every now and again I get a lite backfire when rolling off the throttle... rare and non-violent. FYI, I've got the same filters.

Yep- Too much fuel, not enough spark.
-
Save your starter and battery, go with 5-8 secs max. Should fire within that, or something is off. Cranking longer just drains the battery and overheats the starter.

My 2000 V11 Sport has done it a few times. One spring upon bringing it out of hibernation, it was drastically worse. Would repeatedly blow the right boot off and was almost unrideable due to backfiring under load. Sprung for a VDST and set the fuel air trim in the ECU. It had somehow gotten very lean. Fattened it back up, took a few tries to find the sweet spot. If I recall was plus 12 or so on my bike. Has ran great and not backfired once in the last four years or so.

Blowing the throttle bodies off is not unheard of. Years ago, my Scura (V11) popped back and blew off the right side throttle body. Never happened again.
I suggest checking your valve lash, the clamp bolts of both throttle bodies (to secure any air leaks), maybe pull your injectors and make sure they are spraying a good pattern (may need to have them sonic cleaned), have your ignition timing checked, ignition coils checked etc
-
It just needs a good tuneup. Do it in this order:
Adjust valves, New plugs, TPS set, throttle body balance.
It's not unheard of for the rubbers that hold the throttle bodies on to be cracked and leaking right at the edge of the clamps. I'd check that, too.

I'm watching the boots on my Bassa age and crack, it doesn't look like any fun to replace them. I've considered sealing the cracking zone with black RTV - is that just lazy or legit red suspender territory?

Geez.
Duct tape of course.
-
Maybe you could wrap it with used inner tube and hose clamp it down..
-
Hey, primer it with some high heat RTV, and I could even spring for NEW inner tube material with all the labor bucks I'd be saving.

Why choose? Coat it with RTV AND wrap it with rubber then duc tape over that. If the mice still get in, buy a cat.
