Title: CARC seal BMW part number?
Post by: katanaman on June 21, 2016, 07:20:49 PM
Hi. I have just clocked 30000km on my Stelvio on my lap of Australia, only a few hundred km from Perth. and to celebrate my CARC has decided to start leaking. I have read lots of posts about changing the seal for a BMW part however I cannot find a post that mentions the actual part number of the seal I need to purchase. I found a link on one post that was promising but it is a dead link.

Can anyone please advise the part number of the BMW seal I need. Oh this is for the seal accessed by rear wheel removal.

I have no play in the bearing either, just a wheel that looks like it is off an overly lubed chain drive bike.

Thanks in advance

I changed the CARC parts on my Norge, but the parts I used are a MG seal and a BMW bearing. I'm not sure there is an alternative for the seal. I don't have the bearing number at hand, but it's from an older R-series bike (1990s or so).

I changed the bearing only because I had over 70,000 miles (110,000 km) and the thing was all apart anyway.

Just a word to the wise. The big seals very rarely go tits unless there is something wrong with the bearing. The most common reason for the bearings to fail is water intrusion through the shitty breather. Are you running a remote vent on your bike? Have you done any creek crossings or ridden in a lot of rain?

No creek crossings, no evidence of water in the oil, oil is as new and only did Darwin to Karratha since last CARC oil change. Zero play in the bearing, I will be visually checking bearing when I change the seal.
All I really need is the part number for the seal. I have the number for the bearing if I need to get one..

BTW all going well since rollerising, I will meet my cables in Perth to load the better map but it has been going very well on the map I already had, not that I am pushing it, I have not really been much over 4k revs .

Well if you have any issues give me a 'Hoy!' I can ship you one of my spare CARC's if yours screws up.

Oh, dunno the part # but its dimensions are 85x110x10. I think it was used on the R1100's?

This is what I recorded some time ago.  I can't remember where the information came from, so take it with a grain of salt.

BMW shaft seal (80x110x10) , BMW Part no. 33117679864, about $26 USD

Thanks, I will see if I can track one of these down in Perth.

Just some additional info, this leak started straight after the bike sat in storage for about 6 months. It leaked enough after 100km to drip into the rim and leave a small pool at my fuel stop. After this it seemed to subside quite a lot, only a few drops over the next 500 kms.  I topped up somewhere between 20 and 50 milliliters.the next day it seemed to have stopped leaking..... Now a further 2000km on it is still leaking but very minor, used perhaps 10 milliliters over 2000km.

Perhaps I had a blocked vent after storage that caused the carc to pressurize, ???

BMW shop in Perth had one in stock. Will fit it Friday after a big bike clean up. cost was $56 aud .

Thanks all for your help.

Pete hopefully no CARC required. I will yell out if I have any crazy issues.

Well I thought things went a little to smoothly!!! The seal I purchased is not the correct part number, it is too small. Anyone care to share the correct part number please?

Was it the number I supplied?  Do the dimensions look correct?  If my information is wrong, I should delete it.

Dave, according to the Piggio parts site dimensions are, for the OE part, 85x110x8. The BMW seal, which I've used before, is 85x110x10. The extra 2mm in depth isn't a problem as long as the seal lip is just below flush with the top of the crownwheel boss. You don't, with either seal, push it in until the balls and cage of the bearing act as a register!

OK, , the seal I purchased is a 33117679864. This is not the correct seal as it is the wrong diameter.
I have now ordered a 33121241938 which is the 85x110x10 seal. It s the same price but they don't have one in stock.... Once I have it in my hand I will confirm it is correct, should be here Monday but alas I will be traveling around the countryside south of Perth all week. My seal leak has slowed to almost nothing now so no dramas.

Cheers

If you have the old one to hand (though you should be able to read them with the wheel off alone) it would be worth taking numbers off it and finding your local bearing/seal factor and see if they can help

The number  should look something like this R85X110X8R21 but might have a few odds and sods on the end

Moto Guzzi and every other motorbike manufacturer don't make rubber seals (or bearings or standard bolts for that matter), they buy the most suitable one off the shelf - See here

https://www.eriks.co.uk/Dynamo/ckfinder/userfiles/files/ERIKS%20Agriculture%20and%20Construction%20brochure%20Part%202.pdf

It will very likely be a R21 or an R23, but also match the colour as this indicates the type of rubber

If its just a stop gap to get you home you should be fine with any of the rubbers, but they might not have the ultimate life you might wish for.

Also the OEM designs down to a price. You could take this as an opportunity to up grade - move from a single lip seal to a twin lip for example for a fraction of the cost of the OEM

I do this sort of reverse engineering on gas turbines and I expect to see 40% savings over the OEM prives for the identical part

I hope that helps

Tris

PS
If as Pete suggested the bearing is mullered, your local bearing factor should be able to help with that too if you can give them the numbers off it

Use a nitrile seal in this application and it will fail very quickly. The original and the BMW seal are reinforced lip, viton and almost certainly directional, can't remember, but it would be logical.

I'd hate to be stuck out in the Pilbara with a buggered CARC.... Just sayin....

FYI Viton is the DuPont trade name for FKM or FPM depending on which international standard you refer too

OK, correct part came in to the Perth BMW dealer. Picked it up and  It is now fitted to the Stelvio. Very very easy job, might have to do vent mod next.
