I sure wish they'd push that a month, to the end of September.

August between here and there can be pretty unbearable...

Actually, compared to the Valley of the Sun (1200-1400 feet above sea level), Datil is at 6500-7000+ feet above sea level - along the Continental Divide, so it is not so bad once you get there (IMHO). :thumb:

From 2013 - The VLA (Very Large Array) and the Plains of St. Agustin...

One of these years, I'll haul a bike out there.

Riding across Oklahoma, the Texas Panhandle, and Eastern New Mexico in August just ain't gonna happen.

Two for sure.  Maybe three.  Baxley wheel chocks are on my to-do list.

My old stomping grounds; for many years I camped and worked in the nearby San Mateo Mts. and would get supplies (beer and less important stuff) in the town of Magdalena. My wife and I will be passing through Datil, but not until the 2nd week of Sept. Sorry I will miss it. Maybe some year in the not too distant future.

One year, we stayed in a creepy hunting lodge in Magdalena.  Some photos from that adventure!  The local saloon was entertaining on a Friday night!

The GRIN rally was a favourite of mine. I liked it even better than my own rally  because I didn't have to do anything but have fun😁😁

The area is beautiful. The people are enjoyable and being out of Phoenix was wonderful! Maybe I can get someone to send me a rally tee. Mine's kinda old now😂

It's south of Reno, just east of Carson City - but it doesn't really exist, it's just a 'census designated place'

Take your passport - while you're there, you can visit the Republic of Molossia!

You're not far off - it's usually a place that has a locally recognized name, might have had an official existence in the past (a town that no longer has its own government, for example), and might have a post office - but no legal existence. The people of Dayton have their own post office, but their town (once the county seat) ain't what it used to be!

In rural areas throughout the west, as mining and cattle and farming towns lost ground and were bypassed by railways and Interstates, many have become 'census designated places'.

Looking at riding east from Portland then maybe meet former neighbor in west Ut. and ride over to the rally.  That's the plan.  Whether it comes off is another question.

IIRC, there used to be a little town on the Beeline Hwy in Az that was a post office and diner.  They made the news cause the husband was upset that his wife didn't vote for him as mayor.  He was already the postmaster and 'owned' the diner so she said he was spread too thin.  Of course she voted for herself as mayor.

He must have bent a lot of noses out of joint.  He was a little difficult to buy stuff from.  The rest of the bike wrecking yards that I know of where in PHX near the river bottom which is now most park.  The bike junkyard near the Beeline dragstrip must have been gone long before I showed up.

The bike junkyard at Rye was closer to Payson.

The little town closer to Beeline dragstrip was just a diner/postoffice.  IIRC the same building was also their house.

I am surprised Datil has more than 10 residents.  City limits must be larger than it looks.

Hi Mike -

Leaving Charlotte, NC this morning, back in Vortex-country this afternoon.  Will make reservations at the legendary LARGO MOTEL in Quemado on my return.  Have to be in San Francisco on business July 11-14 (next week).  Have to be in China / Taiwan / South Korea / Singapore on business Aug. 1-16.  ("WHEW!")

Also have to get my Centauro down to Tom Hull before then to get all my upgrades installed before Datil.  Don't know how I am going to manage all this, but will try.  Moby Dick on standby just in case! :thumb:

Sadly, due to my work / travel schedule, (I'll be in Shanghai, Taipei, Toykyo, and Singapore Aug. 1-15), so it does not appear that I will able to get all my upgrades completed on my '98 Centauro GT in time for the Datil Rally.

Oh well, that's why its always good to have a back-up ride! :thumb:  (photo by JJC)

@ Ronzo-Boe-Boe  - - Actually, I am a bit "bummed out!"  The Centauro fits me well and is quite comfortable to ride. I don't think there would be any issues on a long trip.  You have to stop every 100 miles (due to poor MPG) anyway to gas up!

However, Andy talked me out of it because if something happens to that motor - it becomes a 550 pound paperweight.  I have all the upgrade parts, but Tom Hull on vacation and no time to get is all done because of my travel schedule.  Oh well, I'll be riding to Datil, and that's all that matters!

Can't be there, but I just put in to take a couple days off work for the Mandello Guzzi orgy.

You can tell me later how the green-chili burgers and the pie were, and I'll tell you how my pizza, red wine and gelato were!

It has been said that the real danger of the jury system is that the accused face trail by a jury made up of those who could not find a way out of jury duty

The case I got assigned to, got canceled.  Maybe they came to a plea agreement.  Will never know.  Out of the jury pool selection till the next go around.  Whenever that will be.   Last time they tried was when the youngest was a toddler and I was the day care provider.  I returned the paperwork explaining that I would be happy to serve as long as I could get daycare and hotel.  Never heard back from them.

So you guys are operating on the principal that everyone is guilty until proven innocent ? Isn't that backwards ????

 Dusty

Thanks for mentioning this, Dusty - unfortunately, there is always the risk that a jury will assume that the grand jury, prosecutor, or arraigning authority has already done their work. It's mandatory to know that the charge is laid based on having enough evidence to support a trial - not necessarily a conviction. Otherwise, we'd be back to feudalism...  :thumb:

That's why voir dire happens.  It's to eliminate potential prejudiced jury members.  I would be eliminated because of the knowledge of the judicial system, judges, prosecutor & public defender's office.  Police & Sheriff's office.  Department of Public Safety and their separate divisions.  So how's that for being judged before hand.  What if I wanted to serve on the jury and the Public Defender eliminates me based on my knowledge?  I work with ex-offenders coming out of the prison system to find employment.

I highlighted this word in case you missed it the first time.  And, yes, in a couple of them it took a while to convince the bleeding hearts that the guy needed to go to jail.

I have been on juries where the verdict was not guilty because the person was wrongly accused.

I have also asked to be excused when I knew I was going to vote guilty no matter what was said during the trial (two guys, both said the other one did it, ie, executed a third).

For those riding to the rally from the Phoenix area, here is the ride plan.

We will meet at the Quick Trip at Highway 60 and Mesa Drive.
To get there exit Highway 60 at Mesa Drive (Berge Ford).
Head south on Mesa Drive to the 2nd stop light (Javelina)
You will see the Quick Trip on your left.  The address is
1861 S. Mesa Dr. 85210.

Kickstands up at exactly 8 AM.  If you are late, catch up with
us in Globe.  We will ride 60 miles to Globe for breakfast at
Jerry's Restaurant.  Jerrys is on Highway 60 just past downtown
Globe on the left.  The address is 699 E. Ash, Globe, Az. 85501.
There is designated motorcycle parking by the front door.

We will leave Jerry's no later the 10 AM for the 90 mile ride
to Show Low.  This will take us thru The Salt River Canyon.
We will meet up with JJ at the Circle K at the intersection of
Highway 60 and Highway 260 at noon.

We are not planning a lunch stop as we are having a
late breakfast in Globe and pie in Pie Town.  Instead
snacks at gas stops if necessary.

Leaving Show Low it's 50 miles to Springerville and a short
break.  Then 70 miles to Pie Town.  Pie Town to Datil is 20 miles.

We expect to arrive at the rally site around 3-4 PM.

It all depends on what the storms do.

If you have a nice clear day the temps will get up to high 80's and lows will be in the 60's.

If you get an afternoon thunderstorm then the temps will drop into the 60's and night may not get above 50.

So, it's kind of a crap shoot.

Here in ABQ we have had a 'late' monsoon season and have had thunderstorms almost every day, some of them pretty severe so watch the weather radar for your rides into and around the area.

I tent it and it seems that I cook and have an open bag for about an hour, then slowly I have to pull the bag cover over, then I need to zip it up and finally I usually feel the need to pull the jacket over the bag or really tuck into the bag. My bag is not all that warm rated though and for Datil I don't think one is needed. But then I've done winter camping (not a big fan, but great for bragging rights ).

I rolled so much the first year, on an air mattress that Jack complained to me about all the squeaking going on. All night. :D I use a sleeping pad now. Much quieter.

When our Boy Scout Troop camped out one night at a Jamboree outside Bozeman Montana the scout master said I rolled around so much that if they hadn't place the log at the end of the fly I would have rolled back to camp! sigh...

Some times in the afternoon @ Datil in August it gets up into the low 90's.  But at night it usually cools down to where you can sleep comfortably w/a not too well insulated sleeping bag.  I have a sheet in my bag and that's all I need until it gets cooler in the middle of the night.  I mean, we're @ like 7,000' so it's going to cool down no matter what @ night.  But still in the am it's not that cool, just comfortable.  Only real issue is occasional rain and some wind when that happens so your tent better be ready for it.  It's all good.  :boozing:

Thanx, rboe.  Have a new teepee tent.  Haven't tried it in wet conditions yet.   Maybe I should bring the other tent that has been tested in windy/wet conditions.  :undecided:

Does it have good reviews for rain? If so, you may want to save the space a second tent would take up.

We have two Marmots, Limestone model I believe. A 3 person that I use for camping, and a larger 6P I think (I can stand in it) for when the wife and dogs join me. So far, very good in the rain and wind. Being a dome style tent it sheds water and wind fairly well - but not being able to stand is a PITA.

Used a new tent last year that got a pretty good workout weather wise.  Going to used it again this time.  It has more head room and is weather worthy for around here.  For years I've used a quick setup tent but it has little head room.  Teepee tent will have to wait for a later time to test use.   I motel in Springerville the 1st night(tomorrow) 'cause I'm getting soft.

My final comments of the evening..."DATIL OR BUST!"

"Towards thee I roll, thou all-destroying but unconquering whale; to the last I grapple with thee; from hell's heart I stab at thee; for hate's sake I spit my last breath at thee."

89 participants this August !   :thumb:   Must be a record for this Rally.  Weather was iffy, but better than last year once you got there.  I slept comfortably w/o a sleeping bag in my tent.  Had an air mattress, 'summer' zip up single layer of fabric  & a layer of tarp over that.  Slept real good.   Got rained on @ Williams and poured on @ Flagstaff on Hwy 40 coming from Kingman, Az.   Could hardly see dead ahead and even the semi in front of me slowed down.  Luckily didn't get rear ended.

Reminded me of a rain whiteout in Georgia when the wipers on our car couldn't go fast enough to keep us from getting disoriented.  :copcar:

Good thing we weren't on a MC that time !!!   But once I got to the campsite things settled down comparatively.   Everybody seemed in a good mood.

I got home about 6 pm Sunday losing a glove on the fly about 25 miles from home on Rte. 66.  Never did find it.  That was the thing about this trip.  1 minute it's warm, next minute it's getting cold when moving on a bike.

It was a blue 850T that's now a 950T w/custom seat.  :boozing:  Whizzed right by Winslow but did sing the song as I went by.

It is a std. 950T  with ma/pa bucket seat?  Can't remember exactly what you call that touring seat anymore.  Or did it have a long brown seat?  I smacked my head @ the motel in Springerville the night before I got to the rally so maybe my memory is suspect.  :violent1:  The hospital asked me if I wanted stitches or glue to stop the bleeding?     I opted for glue.

the seat was made for me so I was hoping to win it.  :boozing:

Sounds like ArizonaWayne ran into a buddy of mine over lunch in Holbrook. Small world at times.

When I left on Sunday, just before 6am the bike said it was 43 degrees - and I think Saturday night was warmer than Friday night. I needed the sleeping bag to stay warm.

According to some, the rally used to get well over a hundred (do we have a historian here?), then fell on "lean times" but Matt has been building it up gradually over the past several years. Those of us in Arizona have been bringing in some new blood, some even ride Guzzi's! If we can continue to bring in new blood (and Guzzi makes desireable bikes) the rally will be OK.

Yeah, I stopped for a late brunch @ Holbrook Burger King and saw a guy w/a unique small trailer behind their PU truck.   I talked to him about it and we got to talking.  He saw I was on a Guzzi and mentioned knowing some guy named Rboe.  I said I knew of him too, but I can't put a face with that name.  :azn:

I've been coming to the Datil Rally since `01 and all I remember is about 45-50 Guzzisti showing up.  So to me 89 is a new high mark.   :thumb:   I mean faras I know all the earlier rallies were in the upper BLM campground with primitive amenities compared to what we have now.  + Matt Forslund does 1 heck of a job especially for what he charges us to be there.   :thumb:

My forth one I think. Matt does it up right (along with his right hand man Stephan Byarlay). Lot's of interesting roads and sites to check out too. The last two years I've taken to the dirt roads near Datil to check out the back country. May have to truck my XR650L over there some year.

About 8 miles west of Datil there is a Elk Crossing sign and Sunday morning, right after the sign were about 12-20 elk on and on both sides of the road. Saw two deer and two fox (or coyotes) in the same area on Saturday.

Hey! I see Concrete Dick and Jim McDermott. Is that jim Knaup with the long white beard?

I've been several times to the Datil rally and though not large was always well attended. I remember Frank Wedge being there, and of course J.N. The Netherlands Guzzi club was there once. I took a few out pistol shooting. Matt was just getting started with his shop. Cynthia was the 'Hostess with the Mostest'. Nolan Woodbury was shooting pics for the MGNOC new and Jim Knaupp was selling some new and used parts.

Tons of fun!
