Title: Charging Voltage = 2008 Norge
Post by: PJPR01 on July 03, 2016, 02:58:12 PM
Had a great ride to and from John Day on the Silver Norge - still sorting thru pics and videos - hope to get those posted shortly.

Met several other distinguished Silver Norge Owners as well (Pickle, IT Sec) and enjoyed quite a few fun miles riding with TwoWings (Red Norge) and Sbaker (White Norge).

On the day of the departure, I noticed my charging voltage was 12.5 = I stopped by Matt Forslund's trailer on the way out with TwoWings and Sbaker and queried him on the voltage.  Sounds like I have to adjust the belt or determine whether an alternator is in order.  Luckily the bike started and ran with no problems all the way home (Lolo Pass, Beartooth, Chief Joseph, Wind River Range) and all the fun roads in Colorado.

Bike ran all the way back home to Houston sitting around 12.4 to 12.6 charging, and today, after cleaning off almost 5000 miles of accumulated dirt and dust, I see it's charging at 12.7.

Either way, voltage sounds low while running...curious what other Norge owners see when the bike is at idle or while running?

Great fun ride...some hot days no doubt, but plenty of super twisty roads, mountains, rivers and great camaraderie along the way and at the Rally.

Thanks fellas!

P.S.  Thanks ITSEC for the wiring kit as well!

PPS...I have no idea what is was charging on the way out...I never even checked it as the battery had not ever discharged...but it did die at the rally once.  Terminals were all tightened down before I left and no issues with a dying battery on the way back home.

Those are some to the best roads in the US. Great trip, indeed. Are you reading the voltage off the dash? They have been known to speak with forked tongue. Check it with a known good digital voltmeter on the battery terminals.

Thanks Chuck...indeed!!  Wonderful trip!

And yes...I am reading it off the dash...good idea, I'll go out and test it directly and see what I get!  Thanks for the tip!

Well..you're absolutely right!  Voltage meter shows 13.5 at idle, next increment on the digital meter is 14.0 so I'm not sure if it's going up between 13.5 and 14.0 but at least I know it's running in the right range!

Chuck...I owe you a beer!!!  Thank you!

Try measuring voltage when bike is pointing north.  Then try it again with it pointing south.

We found this when we were camped in Victor, Wyoming.. so I'd say Wyoming.

 :1: what chuck said

My B11 shows 13.8v on the dash when I'm riding.

However when I checked it with a calibrated meter across the battery terminals that's really 0.5v lower than the truth.

We had a pretty delicious local Hefeweizen in Cody this past week...was quite tasty!

Ha ha Prescott...good point!  It was downhill at least!
