Colored in states are the ones visited. Others are still on list to be visited.

you can pick from 4 colors for each state.. I bet it denote different years traveled there? but that doesn't explain jumping over states, still it could be over lay of some.?

The colors are leakage.  If I am often in one state -- like Alaska, it's one color.  When I leak out of there  the states I frequent to get to somewhere else are another color.  If I crossed the state line just to claim it -- no other interest in being there, it gets a third color.  Uncolored have not been visited.

They will be done, albeit with less enthusiasm than some of the others.

I've ridden in many states, not as many as you David, but Arkansas is as nice of a place to ride as any I've been in. You should check it out in your pilgrimage.
