Anyone have any leads for a place to stay around Sturgis on the cheap? I'm thinking of going out there with my son. I'll be on my Cal III dresser & he'll be on an Ultra Classic. It doesn't have to be great, I think the plan is to be there the 10th to the 14th. Thanks

May be too late , but try Bobby Whitaker's camp ground in Belle Fourche . Best facilities in the area .

I was there in 92, but I think the Glencoe campground is good. Avoid Buffalo Chip like the plague.

We camped a Bear Creek about 3-4 miles north of town, close enough but far enough to be out of the town. Nice campsite. This wasn't during the rally, would avoid that place then like atomic waste!

Having stayed at Hog Heaven Campground many times and every year it got better. it is in Sturgis and about 5 minutes from freeway exit and entrance, seem to be centraly located to take off for day rides just about anywhere. First year camping was 75 bucks for the whole rally , but things have gone up since 1998

Just don't ever lose sight of a companion in a camp ground like Hog Heaven , you will never see them again :shocked: I still prefer Bobby's small place in Belle Fourche , the po po are friendlier , in fact the old chief was a Guzzi rider .

Six day's of lodging, two people per room - $399.
Should you decide to stay with us, BHSU will house you in our residence hall rooms. Rooms are approximately 12’ x 14’. Each is furnished with two long-length twin beds, two dressers, a desk, a chair, and a sink. Each also has one or two open-fronted closets. View our residence hall rooms. Every room also includes a fan since the rooms are not air-conditioned. Most common areas are air-conditioned. The newest residence hall, Crow Peak, is air-conditioned.
Room capacity is limited to 2 people. An adult aged 21 or older must accompany anyone under the age of 18. Accessible rooms are available on the first floors since elevator service does not exist in any hall. If accessibility is needed, please state your request for an accessible room on your reservation form.
Linen (bedding and towels) is also provided for each person. Each person in the room receives two sheets (either two flat sheets or one flat and one fitted), one light blanket, one pillow, one pillowcase, two bath towels, and two washcloths. Towels and washcloths will be exchanged for clean daily; please bring towels and washcloths to the registration desk in your hall by 9:30 each morning. Blocks A and B will not receive an exchange of sheets and pillowcases. Block C guests will receive two exchanges of sheets and pillowcases during your nine-night stay; please bring your sheets and pillowcases to the registration desk (with your towels) on Sunday and on Wednesday. Please bring all your linen to the registration desk in the lobby of your hall when you check out.
Community bathrooms (complete with toilets, sinks, and shower areas) are located on each floor. Bathrooms are designated by gender and are equipped with separate stalls for toilets and showers.

The local AMCA club stays at the KOA in Deadwood. Up on a hill. Still bring ear plugs for the open piped bikes below going by.

A couple hundred bucks per person, no camping gear, buffet breakfast for under $10, who cares if ya stay a week or a few day's. Spearfish campground charges $125 per person per night for motorhomes. :boozing:

I'd also note that Bobby himself is a long-time Guzzi rider and wrencher. In the pic, that's him standing behind a Loop that he built. He also supported MGNOC for many years by running ads in the magazine. (I don't know if he still does, after it went all digital.) But if I ever make it back, I'll stay there again. I was treated right the last time, and given the opportunity, I prefer doing business with one of our own.

Hey , I recognize that scene :laugh: Of course that year there were maybe 50 campers , 3 years later there were 500 in the camp ground . Still , the best facilities , wonder how it is since the complete remodel ?

I found a ph no for Bobby Whitaker a few weeks back, gave him a call, and found out that he's no longer running his camp ground. Too bad as I always wanted to stay there. Looking at maybe riding out and experiencing the rally again, as I haven't been since 2000. If you see two 1400's, white and red, that will be me and my buddy Mel. Ride safe my friends.

Kevin might be worth considering camping at the Black Hills national forest. That way you get to do the big rally thing all day, check out the vendors, races, food, bars, and when you get tired of all the noise and hustle and bustle you can escape off to the quiet of the forest. That is my favorite way to do it.
Sturgis itself and the big big commercial party type campgrounds are down on the prairie, which usually means hot and a good chance of at least one big storm during the week. Sturgis is right on he edge of the mountains though, and a quick ride up into the mountains the winds slow down, the weather evens out a little and it cools off a lot.
It's a great time no doubt about it.

Is it still open under new management ? Kind of a shame , Bobby is great guy that understands the needs of long distance riders .

State park outside of Hill City, way better than the KOA. Otherwise find the Hell's Angels campground. :evil:

I last went to Sturgis in 1996, but we always stayed at the Rod & Gun Club Campground that is up Spearfish Canyon Rd.
It's about 4 miles up a dirt road, so it's always pretty wide open. We never had any problem getting a campsight, and it was $6 a night, by the honor system. It has a nice trout stream and is in a box canyon that stays cool, even when it is over 100 degrees in Sturgis.
That canyon road is great riding, too.

As you may know, peace and tranquility are the rarest commodities at Sturgis. This campground had both, at least at that time. I feel like I've given away my most secret hunting grounds, but I'm not likely to get back there in this life, so have at it.
I could usually pull out a six pack of little beauties from that stream each morning. It's a lovely little stream. There are also lakes nearby that are very productive. I do so love to fish.
