This may turn out to be counterproductive, but what the hey.
My question is - how loud are glasspack mufflers compared to "standard" cans? And yes I realize that "standard" can mean different things to different people. So, in general, are glasspack mufflers louder than Mistrals without the restrictors/baffles on? Do they tend to sound reasonably quiet at idle and get loud on acceleration? Louder than a typical Harley? Just a general question that I do not know the answer to.

I prefer glass-pack style mufflers, but they are not consistent. They'll be more quiet when the packing is newer, then get louder as the packing burns off with time.
I prefer the lower and softer-edged tone typical of glass packs. Baffled pipes seem edgier to me, unless they are the factory overly baffled types.

They sounded great on my '52 Ford flathead V8. Time to get out my blue suede shoes and wax my ducktail for this thread.

My Mille's stock mufflers are a straight-through design with a perforated core. I assume there is, or originally was some sort of sound absorbent packing around it, either fiberglass or steel wool, but I can't see it to know. The bike isn't loud, but it's not really quiet. Here's a YouTube video I made so I could hear if from a position other then the driver's seat. I don't know how much it will help you as far as describing noise level, but here it is:

Yep, real live Cherry Bomb automotive glasspacks. I think they sound good, a bit deeper (& louder) than stock without being excessive. At highway speed with earplugs I can't hear the exhaust, only wind noise in the helmet.
The only comments I have ever gotten have been positive. Maybe one of the guys on the Central PA ride last weekend can chime in with an opinion, as I was most often second in line. Once on a group ride with the Centauro, I had another guy tell me at a rest stop that he liked the way they sounded. This was from a guy riding a Ducati.

Back in the day (early 70s)...(snap suspenders), They were reasonably quiet for about a year or two at most and then were pretty well blown out. For a little time I had a 70 Dodge Dart 340ci, Hurst shifter, etc. It had glasspacks that were totally hollow, went "ting" if you hit them with something, but damn, they sounded good! That car was a raw beast. When you banged a shift the ashtray would open and dump.

I've now made 2 sets of mufflers, both packed with glass. People usually look at me confused because the pipes on my Guzzi look like straight pipes but are pretty quiet with a nice growl when the throttle is applied.

Dusty - I cannot reveal the reason just yet. Hard to believe no one has determined where this is leading. It is totally legit, I swear on my Annuaki bible.
I understand them to be relatively quiet at idle, deep and throaty on acceleration. Definitely louder than say Mistrals with the baffles in. I like the idea of a deep Guzzi sound. Glasspacks would require ear plugs but no big deal there. I thought the Bubs were loud on my 850 T3. I have also read that a good pair of glasspacks will give a small boost in hp. Lots of different qualities out there.

Harper's sells some mufflers that are glasspack style. Valtek is their brand, but not sure if he has anymore in stock. Curtis told me I got the past pair for Tonti at the time and he probably wasn't going to get anymore made. You may want to check with them unless your going to make them from Cherry Bombs.

Once upon a time I heard a set of Bubs on a Centauro (not mine) and I thought they were WAY too loud, approaching NASCAR level. To my ears, the Cherry Bombs sound a lot better without being obnoxious.

Those are great mufflers, with solid construction, good chrome and great sound. I have a well-used set I'd like to replace just for appearance. I encourage anyone who is interested to contact Harper's and get put on a waiting list, as I did. Maybe if there is enough interest, more will be made.

Mine has been a "Porter" family since long before I was born. When a GP unit is right, NOTHING sounds better. The problem is that if you're a true GP fan, you don't like the out of the box sound and when they do bed in nicely, you only have a certain period before they just go all to hell loud-n-nasty and not in the good, behind the Tastee-Freez way.

Welp, I did not get them. There was an auction on fleabay on a pair of Staintune Conti style glasspack mufflers. The winning bid was around $270. Not knowing just how loud they were, I passed. I suppose $270 is a good price for Staintune's, but not if they are louder than a Harley. I cannot believe no one from this forum did not spot them.

Staintunes are not as loud as a Harley, as you put it. Further, the packing material is SS, so they don't burn out. Furthermore, they are polished SS on the outside. No chrome to go bad. If they went for 270, someone got a good deal.
