Title: GRIT rally - Sep 30- Oct 2, 2016
Post by: oldbike54 on July 28, 2016, 03:48:34 PM
The Turnip called and gave a me a donkey BBQ for not posting info about the GRIT rally (Guzzi Riders in Texas) that the lovely Georgeanne puts on in Lindale. Rather than wrestling the big Texan , thought it might be easier to let everyone know it will be Sep 30- Oct 2 . Beaver will be along shortly to fill in some details .

Oh , and if those dates are wrong , take it up with the Turnip Farmer

The 33rd ANNUAL GUZZI RIDERS IN TEXAS (GRIT) RALLY will be held Friday, Sept 30 - Sun, Oct 2 at the American Legion Jordan-Duncan Post 15 which is located at 18251 CR 498 in Lindale, Texas.  Free camping is available onsite.  If you need W/E hookups for campers or tent A/C's or heaters, that will cost you $15/night.  (No sewer hookups or dump station).  Call, pm, or email me to reserve a hookup spot.  Bring your own favorite chair!  There are some picnic tables scattered around the grounds, but not at each campsite.  There is a big fire ring by the lake and plenty of firewood will be available!

All meals are provided except Saturday lunch.  Coffee, tea, hot chocolate, and water will be available all the time.

The main event is on Sunday, starting with Ken Hand's delicious homemade dessert breads and ending with a spaghetti lunch, awards, 50/50, and door prizes.  It's usually over by about 1:30, but you can hang around as late as you want.

There is plenty to do and see in the area and all the roads are great.  There will be a History/Mystery Run with a prize awarded.

Bring your friends and family and your fishing poles with you.  There is a lake (no swimming) and a pier and Tex has a paddle boat (also called pedal boat) that you can take out or bring your own non-motorized boat/raft. You can also enjoy a relaxing walk around part of the lake.

For those of you who don't like to camp, there are several motels in Lindale and surrounding areas. There is a huge Flea Market in the nearby town of Canton and area motels fill fast, so if you want a room in Lindale, it's best to make reservations.  All the motels are on Hwy 69 by I-20.  America's Best Value Inn is on the South side of I-20 on the service road.

America's Best Value Inn 903-882-6145
Hampton Inn 903-882-1002
Best Western Inn 903-882-8884
Comfort Suites 903-882-8613
Laquinta Inn & Suites 903-882-1600
Motel 6  903-882-7800

This is a free rally, so fill the donation bucket and buy lots of 50/50 tickets to help pay expenses!

The weatherman has called for clear skies all weekend, highs in the upper 70's and lows in the low 50's.  (will edit this as needed)

For more information, contact MGNOC Texas State Rep Georganne Foster, 903-316-7720 or georganne@suddenlink.net.  See ya there!

My fist Guzzi Rally and one that I would never miss.
Gracious and lovely hostess.
Beautiful venue.
Great grub.

May I ask:
--how much gravel road to campsite?
--suggested best route from Houston?
--friendly bunch?

Engineer's mind at work.  Could I pack everything into my Ortlieb?

Dusty,

I need to make a decision soon.  Date is prime Colorado aspen time before snow flies. Colorado trip involves air reservations.

 Giving Grit serious thought.
Don't want to get stuck in construction zone hell.  Route matters.

Never even pitched my tent, or used any of the camp gear.

Only gravel road is the 100 feet to get into the VFW, all the rest is paved up till the location!  You could walk the 100 feet if needed! Don't overplan it!

Friendly bunch...but of course!

1 tent, 1 sleeping bag, 1 change of clothes if needed...done!

Camping is more fun than a hotel in Lindale, there are plenty but you don't want to ride away from the campfire at night...so best to stay at the campsite and relax.

Please don't go to the VFW!  You won't have near as much fun there as you will with us at the American Legion!  :)  They may not take too kindly to someone setting up camp outside their facility.

Lucydad,  I like to go through Brookshire and head north and east, staying off the interstate.  Nicer roads and less traffic.  I can look at my map and post a few routes if you are interested.  Hang around for a week after the GRIT rally and head up to Talihina to the OK campout!

Of course it's a friendly bunch.  I've never been to an unfriendly Moto Guzzi Rally!  Even my grandkids are there for the Sunday festivities!

Pics from the past:
Tex, Randy Tefft (New Hampshire), and Timothy Barlow (Washington), don't they look like a friendly bunch?

Yes, nice pix and smiles on faces.  We all know TEXAS has the most friendly people with the possible exception of Kazakhstan.

A couple of "stupid" questions please.
-- is the power so I could recharge my iPhone for communication and navigation?
-- is there cell phone reception?
-- are there sanitary facilities, or is this dig a hole primitive camping? Porto-potties?  Any showers or bring towelettes?
--water available?
--ravenous bug city? mosquitoes, gnats, chiggers?

Sorry again, and apologies.  I have done a lot of camping in Wyoming and Alaska and way backcountry NM, MT and such.  But thats a long time ago.

Looking at my calendar and weather possibilities in San Juan County, Colorado at 9300 feet. I need a late winter to make GRIT work.

I've been to 44 of the 45 Nationals and average 4-5 other Guzzi rallies a year. Never ONCE have I asked a question about a rally. I go, I discover, I have a good time. Maybe it helps that I have an 8th grade education from a one room country school.

The American Legion is NOT a gun free zone as we have a gun range. No need to worry about the wild hogs, armadillos, possums, boa constrictors, cotton mouths, etc.

I need to ask Beaver if the mosquitos carry the zika virus.

FYI I'm Alfred Neumans cousin. What, me worry? You wont have to worry if Beaver posts a picture of my cousin, Slicer.

Ya'll come to Lindale for the Guzzi Riders in Texas (GRIT) Rally.
Aka the Best Little Rally in Texas.

Beautiful and spacious venue in the Texas piney woods.
Spaces with electrical hookups or set up you tent in the woods.

Folks.  You don't want to miss this one.  It is more betterer than some
of the others.  Just a great time.  In Texas.  What more is there to say?

Well.  Wait . . .

Rumor has it there will be a mysterious, undisclosed, mystery surprise this year.

Again this year there will be lagniappe and Dusty's favorite..codswallo p!

The dessert breads are made and in the freezer. Made extra banana split bread this year. Took two loaves to the American Legion and didn't even get to bring home the crumbs.

My cuz Slicer stopped by and said he couldn't make it Sat night to the rally as Mineola was having a "Ladies night out." Slicer, you won't get throwed, throad throde out, but you will get rolled out of town.

Going to bring up some Polish Poppyseed cake I just bought in Toronto to see if Tex enjoy it as much as his breakfast breads...maybe even convince him to incorporate into next year's menu!

The premium at the stations is supposed to be real gas.

There are some gas stations at Lake Fork, 20 - 30 miles north west of Lindale that advertise ethanol-free gas.

Paul, Ken won a can of Polish at the National Rally in Virginia a few years ago.  He wasn't sure what it was for, but he was thinking maybe it would be a tasty spread on your Polish Poppyseed cake.  Should he bring it with him?

Hi Georgeann,

By all means...let's see what it is.  Generally Poppy Seed cake is eaten without anything else on top, but I'd be curious to see what the contents are.  I'll also bring 1/2 a loaf of walnut bread - same shape as the Poppy Seed Cake, but made with walnuts.  These are all typical Eastern European pastries...highly addictive ones...my dad used to bring them back from Poland on his trips...very special treats!

Looks like we'll be headed up Saturday with Tom and my buddy Rob as well...should be there mid afternoonish...

Weather is just perfect for riding...wish I could take a whole week off to go and ride!

Paul:

As to this "Polish Poppyseed" bread you profess to possess.  Is this the blue or white variety of poppyseed??

Are these poppy-seeds the nice stuff from the Q'reb highlands region of northeast Afghanistan?   Or just  cheap stuff you can pick up most anywhere in Pakistan?

Organic?   Steel cut?

For the first time in my life...I am stumped....all I know is they are tasty poppy seeds!!! I suspect they were specially harvested near the Khyber pass, carried by mule train to the western border where they were loaded into the trunk of a 1932 Pierce Arrow driven by Dirk Pitt.... And made their way thru Isfahan to The Straits of Hormuz, where they were lovingly handed off to a hyper fast cigarette boat up to Dubai, put on a plane to Wroclaw, Poland... Turned into a delicious poppyseed cake and sent to Canada... Where they were purchased by yours truly... Carried in my hand luggage and are waiting patiently to be shared this weekend with my Texas Guzzisti friends... The ones who can maKe it thru the gravel road entrance to the HQ of GRIT!!

As always...another fabulous GRIT rally...we had perfect weather riding 2 up loaded with gear and it was great to have my riding buddy Tom (Nova on the Stelvio) along as well, super to see friends again and a big thanks to Tex and Beaver and Prescott and family for all the hard work putting the event together.  My only loss...somewhere from 50 miles into the rally, my GoPro Session mysteriously came off the bike, so no video.  If anyone found it at the Rally site, I'd appreciate letting me know.

Ages I think went from 2 to 75...so it seems like a new generation of riders is already being Guzzi-trained...

Sam serenaded us on the guitar with many a song, Huckleberry Junior (Two Wings) joined in his Basso Baritone and we all enjoyed the evening campfires.  Fun to see many familiar faces and meet some new folks as well!

We had a great time...allow me to consume some of your bandwidth and share some photos here, I'm sure others will post as well:

Tlhe American Legion in Lindale has a gun range. Gun range + bar, not a good pair.

At our monthly meeting last night Beaver had a nice note thanking the Legion for the use of the grounds. She paid for the use of the pavilion plus added a good amount as an extra. I'm proud of you!
