Title: Off to see the Wizard....(GC)
Post by: screamday on July 29, 2016, 04:56:48 PM
The wonderful wizard of WO (or OMG). Headin' out in the morning, south, to Dacula, GA where Wayne Orwig has once again graciously agreed to try to diagnose my electrical problems with the EV. Fortunately for me, it did not start this time while trying to get it on the trailer. So maybe it will still be ill when I get there.

Thanks Wayne!

The man's a wizard with electrons.   I was scratching my head at the Virginia rally one year over a turn signal that wasn't working.   Had tried bulbs, continuity, frame grounds, all I knew.

Wayne took my DVM, set it to Volts, probed it once, clicked it to Ohms, probed it once, handed it back and said "Bad internal ground on the signal assembly".   It was like watching a Marine clear the chamber on an M16 ... click, click, click and done in seconds ....

Not to wish bad luck on anyone, but it this case, I hope it is STILL dead when you get here so it can be tracked down.

Exactly! Last time it was on its best behavior.

Well, I hope we nailed it. But just in case, I am moving and leaving no forwarding address.

Relay bad. Disassembled the relay and it would only contact when squeezed.
Below are photos of the bad contacts.

BUT, it isn't that simple. The relays have been replaced and swapped MANY times trying to fix this. So I'm wondering if the starter solenoid has a few shorted winding, or something odd, doing more contact damage than normal. So it is working now, but...............

With the contact area looking like it has been arced it very well could be very intermittent. Personally I would throw al new relays at it from the looks of that one.

Again. :violent1:

But yea, at this point that is all we can do. And he will carry a large box of relays.
