Just picked up a used Hero 3, know nothing about them at this point in time. Thinking of placement on the left fairing area? Don't use full-face helmets, so the chin mount is out of the question. Don't think a chest mount would work well with a full fairing/ windshield? Also my Niece said get a 128k memory stick (going to BestBuy today). Will need a wall charger too as I'm not bringing a computer along on my trip (leaving the 8th).
Looks like I have an adjustable mount for handlebars, maybe I'll mount it on the bar-end?
How long will a battery charge last on these things?
Thoughts...

I think she means a 32Gig SD card, will get you a couple hours depending on what quality level you record at. check first, I think you need a mini SD card (the kind the fits into an SD size adapter to plug into computer.)
battery lasts a few hours give or take.. you could power it from the bike with a cig lighter input. if you should choose to shoot time lapse stills instead of video the battery lasts a lot longer.
mounting? something in the foreground like the dash is a good thing so behind the w/s might be fine.
the cell phone app is great for controlling it without having to move the camera and you can view/adjust the picture your getting.
go to Gopro web site, they have all the answers.

Thanks fotoguzz, looks like I have a Hero 3 White unit, paid $50 with some mounting bits. Was used twice, Nephew wants to upgrade. Checked the SDHC card, it's 32GB. Found a quick start guide online, no manual was included. Hey, it was $50. :boozing:

Hi... I have found, on my Norge, that mounting the camera to the bike transmits too much vibration to the camera. Even using Ram mounts that are supposed to isolate the vibration.. I found the chest harness the best solution. It will show the instruments and a view of the road ahead. Helmet mount is good too, but overtime you look around the camera swings with you. Makes the finished film a bit jerky. Chest mount seems to be the most stable, and also no vibrations from the bike.
As for battery.... The standard battery lasts about 1.5 hours in Video Mode. MUCH longer in intervelometer mode. Set you time for a few seconds between shots and when you play them back you get a good sense of the drive. If you want REALY twisty then you will need video mode and getting power from the bike will solve the battery problem. Keep and eye on the weather. The Camera itself is NOT waterproof... You need the housing for that.

I've tried helmet top, behind the windscreen and clamped to the bar end. Here's how it works on the bar end -- not too shaky.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5QwMzfWFpeE (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5QwMzfWFpeE)
Through the windscreen works but you get a lot of reflections off the screen. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gizhGfonbr8 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gizhGfonbr8)
Helmet top works well if you keep your head steady and the camera properly pointed down the road, but it also clearly shows the speedometer which is evidence to your spouse and kids of how fast you were really going (and to the cops after the fact if you have an accident). In this one I had trouble keeping my head high enough to include the horizon in the frame. Also, the helmet mount reduces the sense of the bike leaning into turns. https://youtu.be/FLe0QCLGTW0 (https://youtu.be/FLe0QCLGTW0)

I've used mine a lot in Oz and Europe, with good results, have it mounted on the side of my Arai and gives no vibration view over standard Norge screen. If you want to check results you can PM me and I'll give you the site for you tube DVD in Nordkapp 2015 so you can judge for yourself

Helmet mounted gives a good POV with no vibration.
Chest mounted would be similar.
Any mounting to the bike will have 'hum bars' in the picture unless you go to the highest frame rate/resolution. That chews up file size quick. There does not seem to be a mounting type that cures this. Not super annoying, but impacts quality.

YouTube has software to get some of the shake out once it's posted.

Some great mounting options are available from Touratech/Cycoactive. Below is a sample page, but other applicable gear can be found on this vendor's site.

Ok, been busy all day, that $50 camera doesn't go into video mode, must be 1st generation Hero. Ok, my blood is starting to boil, sprung for a new Hero 4 Silver. Messing around with mounting ideas. Thinking right side helmet mount. Should I use a 90 degree angle mount?
-
Suggest you look at the GoPro Session rather than the Hero. I am using it, and it's much easier than the Hero, is by itself waterproof, smaller cube and much easier to use by hand as well. Tons of mounting options...front fender, rear fender...anything above the shock absorbers will be fine...I've done a ton of taping from those two positions and have zero vibrations.
Helmet mounts are great, I"m also looking at a side fender mount...best to also get a GoPro Remote Control unit rather than using your phone will riding. Mount the remote control with the strap to your Clutch Fluid cylinder flat surface, and you can just press ON/OFF and not worry about fiddling with the phone while riding...much much easier.
Session costs $199, vs. Hero at $399?

, that $50 camera doesn't go into video mode,
all gopros do video so something(settings) must be wrong.. or the SD card is not class 6-10

will a side mount rip off mi helmet ( just a sticky)?
-
plug the old camera into your computer and connect to GoPro website and upgrade the cameras firmware.. then you'll have 2 video cameras to work with..
-
firmware won't load, camera is junk, spent half the day with the pos.

Anyone use GoPro Studio Editing Software?
Hope to get around 6 hours of footage in 1080p @ Sturgis. Plan on doing more than just riding shots, we'll see. :boozing:

I Kinda wish there was a "top of the shoulder" mount... I'm not crazy about the helmet mount, and the chest mount can be a bit low ... Top of shoulder would be good... Perhaps I can borrow some pirates parrot!

I've decided to go with a handle bar mount, problem is I wish it had a swivel, not enough time to order one right now as I'm leaving on a road trip Monday morning.

You can put a RAM mount on the LHS, the bolts that hold the clutch cylinder/clutch assembly...replace them with a RAM mount and then buy the component here. You could always have it mailed to an address in Sturgess so you'd have it there for the trip.

This is what I used to attach the camera to the bar-end.

Should be available in any camera shop for under $20.

Did a pre-trip test today, battery only lasted about 20 minutes!
Found there is a BacPac battery for $50, GoPro say's it's good for 3 hours at 1080p/60
Returned the stock battery and went home with the BacPac.

Another reason why the GoPro Session is a better camera (in my opinion), as the battery will last about 2.5 hours of solid filming. My Hero 4 Black used to go thru batteries every 20 minutes too...drove me nuts.
-
With the acres of plastic on the Norge, the suction mounts should work well. They can be shaky if you're on rough roads, but on normal roads the rubber suction helps isolate the vibration.

Thinking the BacPac needs a separate charge from the original battery. Had the wall charger plugged into the camera with both batteries installed, didn't seem to charge (waited like 2 hours). Removed the BacPac to charge separately from original battery (seems to be working now). In other words, two batteries need to be charged from two different sources....

I'm so confused...
Leaving Monday for Sturgis, obsessed with this dang camera, need a 110 instamatic. :boozing:

Too funny!! Well, you can always get a nice small hand held camera with Video from Best Buy as a last resort!!!
-
Reviewed handle bar mount 'test' on Vespa, no good, shaky video even at 25 mph. Going with Helmet top mount instead.
