Title: Cracks in wheel rim

After fitting new tire to wheel of my Tricking I noticed I have at least 4 Cracks in nipple dimples on the rim. Would you think that any decent machine shop can properly repair such cracks. I would like to avoid packing wheel up and mailing to specialist. Also does it make any sense to drill small hole at end of crack before welding? Rim is stainless and I am capable of truing after or maybe even before repair?  Hope you can make out crack in middle dimple in image. Appreciate any input.

Throw it away! The rim is Stainless? poor material choice for a wheel rim, too hard and brittle and not ductile enough.

Hi Bill, I could see the crack in your rim . I 'am a certified Aerospace Materials TIG Welder so I have some experience
with the type of repair you are asking about. First comment I have , I have never seen a rim crack like that so I would
suspect the original quality of the RIM. So your best bet would be to replace the rim. If you want to get it welded, you
need to Know What alloy of stainless the rim is made of. There are a lot of different alloys and you have to use the right
welding rod for the alloy you have . You will have to completely disassemble the spokes from the rim. After the rim is
welded it will need a crack inspection and some alloys of stainless need to be passivated after welding.  I know it's just
a simple crack, but if it's not done right it can make the Rim worse than it is now. Most Machine shops don't have good
welders. You want a welding shop that repairs Aircraft parts. It could cost several hundred dollars , also a lot of aircraft
repair depots have very high minimum charge. The place I work has a 500 dollar minimum. I would look on the internet
for a rim .

Hope it helps.

I had a few cracks like that on the rear wheel of my Cali3 when I got it. I got a rim from Tom Newell in Brisbane and took it to Superior spokes[ in Bankstown I think]  for them to drill and rebuild. Cost about $700 all done.

That rim was Akront and alloy as was the one that cracked. Sometimes it pays off to give the wheels a good polish!
