Got home from work this evening and spent an hour putting my 2012 Stelvio back to stock in preparation for a tentative trade tomorrow for the MGX if I like it. Almost had second thoughts. I really love the NTX. It's fast, fun and just freaky enough for me. Problem is I haven't had enough fun on it. 4 years and less than 8,000 miles is pathetic. Back when I was an employee, I was able to scrape around 30K miles per year due to vacation times, 10 rallies a year, etc. Now that I'm an employer, I forget what vacation time and rallies even feel like. Someone tell me again how good retirement is please
Anyways, I'll be sure and chime into the MGX review thread with my thoughts on the extended ride home if I get it.
Funny, Tulsa is about 150 miles or so from my house, but my house is about 300 miles from Tulsa the last couple times I went there (2009 Stelvio and 2012 Stelvio). Not sure why that is

I saw it today when I picked up my Norge...they have it all shiny for you.... :thumb:

May you make the right choice.

Lucky. I've never even seen one in person yet. What'd you think?
May you make the right choice.
I hope. Could come down to a coin toss. With Guzzi though, I don't know if their is a wrong choice. I like all of them.
-
All I can say is, if you haven't ridden the 1400 yet, your in for a treat. Good luck tomorrow!
-
Can't wait to see it.
-
I wonder, would you have remorse if the Stelvio goes.. I still miss my Uly .. and my Black Bassa and my V11...some of the time..

Sweet dreams tonight and have a great ride home on the MGX. Retirement.....ever yday feels like a Saturday! :thumb:
-
You'll miss your Stelvio for the handling but for 2 up touring you'll enjoy it more so will the Boss. :thumb: You'll really like the drivetrain.

Hi Luap, I saw the MGX when the did the revealing in spring time. I am still riding the 98 California with the hitch I bought from you. I am currently looking at a 2015 Stelvio. Basically a solo bike for me. My wife really wants the Eldo for 2 up. I liked the looks of the MGX but never considered it. Now that it's out and getting great reviews I could go with another sport cruiser. You are like me and like to rack up the miles in one day while traveling. With the forward foot position you could ride that thing all day.
I bet you'll be impressed. Pictures if you get it please :gotpics:
-
Sounds like you're like me, Luap, in that I don't buy anything until I 1st ride/drive it to see If I really want it. Some times when I test a new vehicle I'm put off by what it is and don't buy it. My 1st Guzzi was so different I almost didn't buy 1. But that was 30+ years ago. Good luck.

Surely everyone is about 24 hours from Tulsa

Yep. I won't commit unless I like it. It's a major commitment that I don't take light heartedly.

We don't ride 2 up. Momma rides her 2001 California Special. I will miss a lot of the aspects of the Stelvio though. Heck, I still miss my Quota at times.
I wonder, would you have remorse if the Stelvio goes.. I still miss my Uly .. and my Black Bassa and my V11...some of the time..
Remorse? Doubt it. But I do still miss my Quota, Centauro, and EV at times. But, I always heal up :azn:

I have the same problem with the 18 mile run from the office to home - on a nice day I have a "tendency" to get lost for some reason
It NEVER happens when I'm in the car
Strange isn't it
-
The 1400 is a fantastic bike. Bet you come home with it.
-
The Stelvio sets a very high bar for all-around performance and capability.
Still, people like different things.
The MGX Bat Bike is certainly different. If it's a change you want, you are definitely going to be getting that. I've seen them and sat on them.
The Bat Bike is low-slung, long and dark. It fits in more with an Arlen Ness heavily customized H-D than anything else in the Guzzi or any European bike line up.
I've ridden a regular 1400, hard. It'll haul butt and it handled well. The MGX has the narrow and tall, disced-out, 21-inch wheel up front (again like many chopperesque custom bikes) so I would expect some variation in handling.
Again, different strokes from different folks.
One thing for sure that I can guarantee you. Wherever you take that thing, you will attract a lot of attention.

How do you know he's looking at a black one? Maybe he'll get one that has the other color scheme.

Are you going to get custom plates with lettering "BAT-1" or "2F-3567" for nostalgia's sake?

We see vehicles like that in Las Vegas all the time, usually with manufacturers' plates - they want to make life difficult for the spy camera guys looking to get photos of prototype cars!

Why did all the "cool" movies between '68 and '72 have such downer endings?
It was a pretty grim time in our history -- assassinations, tragic pointless war costing 58,000 American lives, riots, draft protests. Cultural polarization made today's politics look friendly. Upbeat movies felt unrealistic. Most of the folks in my generation identified with anti-heroes.

Now there was a weird piece of movie making , Terry Kath , Walt Parazaider , Lee Loughnane , and Peter Cetera from Chicago all playing , well , whatever those guys were supposed to be , Robert Blake playing himself , and Nick Nolte before he was Nick Nolte . The ending was sorta borrowed from Easyrider , and the middle was just confusing

Be thankful you're making enough to buy the MGX21. Some of us have had to work 3 years without pay

Ok, made it home. With the MGX. #20 as a matter of fact. The honeymoon is off to a rocky start, but I see light at the end of this tunnel due to a great dealer.
I showed up in Tulsa at 9:30 AM today. They were putting the finishing touches on the MGX they designated for me. It appears they sent both of these bikes and both were missing some things here and there so they put one together using the other. Beats me why they'd do that, but I suspect the Sturgis thing had a little to do with it.
Anyways, I go to the bank to get the money and when I get back, they are switching everything around. Turns out the one they had for me had turn signal problems. So, they switch everything around to the other one and test it all out. By the time all this takes place is about 3PM and those guys were doing everything they could for me to get me outta there.
I hit the road and make it about 20 miles or so when I realize the turn signals aren't working on this one now...WTH? Turn around and head back to the dealer and they look over everything again, even call Guzzi HQ to no avail. The dealer is thinking it's something in the switch. Paul says if you can live without turn signals until we get the fix, I'll personally come to your house and fix it. I agreed to that. I rode a 73 Eldo for many years without turn signals, so no big deal to me.
I hit the road again and it's now around 4. Lets just say, I freaking love this motorcycle. I'm toodling along at the speed limit of 65 or so and can still hear the stereo...somewhat. Just enough to be able to understand what song is playing. I can hear it plain as day up to 55. Here are some additional thoughts I have so far with just at 150 miles on it.
The windshield is 40%. It's good up to around 55, then you get a lot more blast. I'll definitely be getting the XL option.
The throttle is STIFF. I see why they put cruise on it. It's a booger. That is one tight spring in there. I suspect it'll break in better.
The seat...didn't really think about it so it must be ok.
The seating position is nice. But at speeds of 75+, an updraft was pulling my leather jacket up. When I stopped to put on my tourmaster 1 piece, it was very nice. Should have started out like that.
I love the adjustable clutch and brake levers. I set it to the shortest throw.
Veloce is my favorite mode. I like how you can switch modes on the run as long as cruise is on.
The cruise control is cool. I don't care about resume. It works good for me.
The toggle is a PITA for the radio. Too sensitive. Maybe has something to do with the switch and turn signal problem too since they share the same housing?
It seems to handle good. I wasn't able to push it too much since the roads were a little wet. But I will.
The bad:
Poor prep by Piaggio from what I can tell.
I lugged it by accident in Tontitown and the engine light came on. I'll try a battery cable reset to see if it goes away.
The turn signal problem. I hope it's isolated.
That's all I have for as little time as I have in the saddle. Stay tuned....
-
Since most of your return trip was in Oklahoma , the lack of turn signals was for certain not a problem
Glad you are happy :thumb:

i have to admit i was the first bitching and complaining about the look of this bike when first came out.... but after seeing it in person in Milan a couple of weeks ago, i changed my mind.
pics does not do justice , it need to be seen in person.
I hope dealers going to have a demo bike to try out.

Congradulations Luap, I know your gonna love it. Not that the mgx won't attract attention, but you really got to find yourself a bat man outfit.
-
First off, congrats on the new bike, I do like the look. It is a bit like Arlen Ness meets HD at the Moto Guzzi factory.
What I don't understand is how MG lets bikes leave the factory with parts missing, signals not working etc. Sorry guys, quirky manufacturer or not, TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE. Because it's a toy we over look the shortcomings. If you went to pick up a new Chev truck (example only) and got to the dealer and found parts missing and signals not working, you'd be pissed. Probably refuse to take it or request another one. I can't even imagine a dealer telling you to drive home with signals not working. Lug the engine or not, why would the bike throw a code, "something rotten in Denmark" boys and girls. Hate to be a downer but when you pay BIG MONEY, I don't think you should have these problem on the first day of ownership.
Just say'in.

I couldn't agree more. I think they'll get everything ironed out fine. I may have rushed them a bit due to my tight schedule.

Beautiful bike. Just my 2 cents worth, but with the black head covers from the Audace on my white 2014 touring, it really looks snazzy. Pretty cheap too, considering (I'd snap my red suspenders if I had any). The red just doesn't look right to me.
-
As was mentioned, pictures really don't capture the beauty of these machines. You completely miss that third dimension. I've seen one in person and the valve covers are a much more subtle part of the overall package . The top of the fins are polished aluminum and look real nice. I am surprised at the amount of spring return on the throttle, my custom is just the opposite.
-
Hey......now Moto Guzzi is building bikes for the 6' and over crowd. One of my observations of Moto Guzzi over the years is that they make medium sized bikes that a lot of people have to resize for their larger frames.
-
When the Tonti frame was designed, the average height of an Italian male was 172.5cm (you can look that up!) or 5'8", which happens to be my height.
-
+1 That's why Moto Guzzi fits me.
-
I have a specification question. Will a twelve pack fit in the cases?

Thanks. It's a real head turner and conversation starter. I rode it to O'Reilly's this evening and had 4 guys ask what it was. There are no words on it anywhere. A quick history lesson and they were all intrigued. All of them were under 35 and all said it was "kick ass". I think that is the exact response Moto Guzzi was hoping for. One of the guys said he was going to start researching them. He might even chime in here later...
Side note, I pushed it pretty hard in the corners today and it never barked. I'm diggin it.
-
As the resident Harley fan you'd think I'd love this. But ironically I'm not a fan of Harleys with a batwing fairing.
Then I see the pics and have to pull a double switch and actually love it.
Nice ride.
Dammed if I understand why I like it!
-
Dammed if I understand why I like it!
Because it's a Guzzi!
-
I think:
1) The 1400 series is the best bike Guzzi have made in years
2) It embodies the Guzzi "spirit" better than any in some time
3) They are fantastic to ride.
-
Good luck with it Luap. Hope it is a great bike for you.

I could not agree more. Well said!
-
This is definitely a "watershed" moment bike for Moto Guzzi. A model that brings totally new people to the brand. The last model that did this was the '98 California EV.
-
Depends ?
Depends come in a twelve pack?
-
The 1400 sounds really nice but I am now very gun shy concerning buying new from Guzzi after my roller debacle with the Norge and all the problems Frank Wedge had with his 1400. Luap, best of luck. Hope it is a great bike for you.

Finally sat on one at the dealer, this bike has PRESENCE !
Saddlebags had not been installed yet, and I could easily imagine panels in place of bags
slimming down the back end if one wanted to.
Quite a stout return spring as Luap noted.
Cast bars should have had some adjustability (like my old Yamaha vision)
With butt up against seat stop, there is a nice long reach to bars for me, though others
may miss not having bar position options.
Cannot believe how different this bike comes off in person as opposed to photos !
-
Does the rear wheel have the carbon fiber look like the front. I'm thinking yes but being covered up might have a different look. Does it have that cover look?
-
No.
Although service dude mentioned "quite a bit of prep work" to get bikes ready for showroom.
Maybe he hadn't gotten to that part yet..
-
The bike being bagged would catch the crosswinds and be a lot of fun to ride on I40 between Gallup and Flagstaff.
-
But of course you know the carbon fiber wheel covers come off, should the owner wish a more open feel.
-
If I knew the answer, I wouldn't have asked. Haven't seen one yet either.
-
Saw one at AF1 this weekend. It was sold so all I could do was look at it. IMHO Guzzi is upping the ante with regard to fit and finish. I spent about 20 min checking it out. Completely different switch gear than the earlier 1400s. Looks like the cruise control will be easier to use. Regarding the throttle - looks like the accentuator is now at the throttle grip instead of down in the bowls of the bike. Suspect that is what is changing throttle feel. I wonder if Guzzi will be changing out the switch gear on the other 1400s.
I must say, if I didn't have the Cali Custom I'd give this bike serious consideration.
-
Kim just saw the pictures and said it was sexy as hell.
So Luap, stay away from my wife!!!
-
Congratulations Luap. :boozing:
As a data point, you can change engine modes as long as there is no load on the throttle. For instance: cruise not set, release throttle, cycle through engine modes... (I have never tried it during cruise operation, so I learned something today. )

Yeah it's pretty neat. Also, coming home today I got to hear the oil cooler fan running. That is neat and I didn't know it had them. Now, if I can just get the dang engine light to stay off and get some working turn signals, I can concentrate on how nice of a bike it is. It's a real attention gitter, that's for sure.
-
I know someone has pre ordered one from my dealer. I hope I get a chance to see it before it goes home.

You have a real headturner there, even if a couple of gremlins have stowed away on her. You'll sort them out - part of the WG experience as you know better than anyone, hosting this thing. Congrats!
-
An observation of mine.
Moto Guzzi Motorcycles have one of the best engine/trans/rear-ends combo's for a motorcycle surrounded by dubious peripherals. That includes all their models for the era that they're marketed in.
