I know that there are MZ fans here, so, I thought I'd share this.
Not mine, just saw it while browsing Craigslist.
$1,800.

You think Guzzis are hard to sell? Try an orphan.
Good bike, I'd say it's priced about right. Do you have a place to ride twisties? You'll love it.
-
Looks to have been repainted, poorly, at some point. Wonder why?
-
Doesn't show signs of being crashed, I'd say he likes that color. It's not factory.. you're right.
-
Probably no more MZs for me unless I find a 1000S cheap.

This MuZ 660 has a Yamaha motor so there's no problem getting parts for it. Whereas that 1000 MZ..........have no idea how you could ever get parts for it if you needed to since MuZ went bellyup right after that model came out.
My `01 660 Tour is the best handling bike I've ever owned/ridden 1 or 2up and get's high 50s mpg. :thumb:

If I can find parts for a '39 DKW, then a "modern" MZ will be a piece of cake...
-
I don't know, Charlie, likely a lot more 1939 DKWs out there than MuZ1000s..
And if you can lve with everything backwards you could get a Bantam!
-
I don't know, Charlie, likely a lot more 1939 DKWs out there than MuZ1000s..
Should have specified what '39 DKW - it's an NZ500 (two-stroke, vertical twin). Not many left.
-
Offer $1500 and use the balance to repaint it back to original? If I were in the market, that would be my approach.
BTW, where does the 'Tour' part enter into it? Seems more like an exotic alternative to a SV650...
-
If you look at MZ's website http://www.muz.de/ there is a link to their spare part (Ersatzteile) lists http://www.muz.de/ersatzteillisten.html, even for the 1000 S model!
Use the "translate this page" function (Google Chrome browser) and you can see that they still offer spare parts, which they sell through an on-line shop.
I had one of their robust 250 cc two-stroke models (ETZ 250) in the 80s, but hardly ever needed spare parts.

Did someone say "MZ"?

I have lots of twisties to ride, and have a Ducati Monster 796 that perfectly suited for it. And, I have plenty of other bikes. So, I don't have a need for the MZ, cool as it may be.

Never ridden a Ducati 796, but I also gotta tell you riding my `01 MuZ Tour in the twisties was a whole new experience! I had ridden my VX800 Suzuki thru corners literally pushing the front wheel thru corners like the real road racers do, but my MuZ 1 or 2 up was a new training experience on it's capabilities!! I was shocked !! Never had the balls on a public road to push it's front wheel thru a corner like that. Would only try it on a track. Some times you think you've tried it all and then you find you haven't. BTW, I used to amateur road race successfully in my 20s so it's not like I haven't been pushed before.

The biggest limitation of my Monster 796 is ME. It's capabilities far exceed mine.

When I lived in Aachen, Germany (2004-2005) I almost bought one...brand new in the crate...but I thought $6800 USD at the time was way too much to pay .
Anyway, they are very capable and reliable middleweight bikes from what I remember. As a second bike, why not? With the Internet...and a little research...parts are still available, I'm sure...
Certainly, it would be no worse than owning a Laverda twin / triple or a Moto-Morini, or a bike like that.
Anyway, I wound up buying a "mint" 1993 Triumph Trident 900, which I rode for 2 years - and sold it 2 years later before I left for the same money I paid for it, 2500 Euros - - - and that was a fabulous bike! :1: :thumb:

Oh, yeah.. you *can* get parts for the Skorpion.. I've just been spoiled by the readily available Guzzi parts. I found parts for the weird Harold twin carbs in Poland. A couple of brackets in England. It's not like you can just ring up Gordon (or others) and say, Hey.. I need something for my old loop.
-
I've just been spoiled by the readily available Guzzi parts.
Now there's a phrase that in any other context would lead to huge peals of laughter!
-
So many riders don't ride brand X because it doesn't have a dealer in every town or parts aren't available all over the place.......most Guzzi owners don't have that mindset or they wouldn't ride a Guzzi. Nowadays with the internet finding parts for an orphan are MUCH easier/faster than it ever used to be prior. That's assuming you need any replacement parts in the 1st place.
This month we have the upcoming Cannonball Run of decades old (older than us) MCs getting ready to be ridden cross country for God's sakes! I wouldn't try that but am happy to meet those that do it. :thumb: I applaud them for their efforts and accomplishment.

It's interesting that one of the two bikes in the pair was run with low oil, and he thinks replacing the rings and honing the cylinders will fix it.

I think we will just start right here and see how this works . Will begin to merge some of the older posts as we go along here .

Well, here are some brand new MZ's at an old dealer that are still for sale. I didn't ask the price. Years ago, he still wanted list price.

Looks like a great one. Do those side bags fit helmets? And can you put alloy (tubeless) rims on those? If so, from which model?
That could potentially solve my longer-distance riding. My G5 only holds a screwdriver as it stands now...

There is a scam running on ebay/craigslist where the criminals are hijacking legitimate sales and using what appears to be the correct bank account. They do a convincing job impersonating the seller. A fairly shrewed friend of mine was recently bilked for 7000USD. The feds are working on it but those overseas mobsters are hard to catch.
This ev has sold at auction 3 times and still listed?

The only museum around here (Cincinnati/Columbus area) that I can think of would be the the AMA http://americanmotorcyclist.com/hof/ which could be from there (the walls sort of look like it....). I haven't been there in a while (12 years I thinknow), and don't remember if they had any Moto Guzzis in there or not - The map of the CL posting shows Chicago area, but hard to rely on those anyway.

Is this unified thread working for the members participating ? Chuck , are you happy ?
Dusty
-
Works for me now that I'm in and get regular email notifications, so in that sense it's much better. I do think there may be less action though as other uses may not regularly come in here to check what's new, whereas in the General Discussion people may just take a peak at a new CL thread regardless.
If there were revenue coming in by us (Chuck mainly) posting CL threads to this forum, I'd say this killed business. Since that's not the case, then it's OK and keeps the General Discussion a little cleaner (though I've notice many CL post still end up there).
My 2 cents for the day. Hope that helps.
-
Yes Groover , it helps , thanks .
Dusty
-
I have no issues with this format. :thumb:
-
My idea was to generate discussion....post an interesting CL ad, see what everyone says.
"I had one of those.." "Mine sucked..." " mine was great..." "Don't buy that version, get this one..." "All I need to finish a restoration is a seat hinge..." "I've got this old seat hinge, anyone want it?..."
That sort of stuff. In the main listing I was careful to id the post with model, date, location so people could decide quickly if they wanted to comment, or ignore
Over here seems to be a lot less spontaneous discussion. I don't quit understand why we would want fewer posts, and this CL stuff drops off the front page real fast if no one is interested. If it does spark some back and forth, the better, but seems to be a lot less in this divided section. I think we lost some back and forth here.
My idea is to pick up on the more unusual offerings, as well as highlight other models that were cool back in the day, and unusual cost opportunities, mismatched pricing, rare models...
-
We are going to unsticky this and see what happens . Probably leave it in this unified format for a bit longer , sometimes it takes time for folks to adjust .
Dusty
-
I didn't see that this was "unstuck" proper wording?

A look at the history of this combined thread, and a comparison to the typical length of the individual threads that preceded the combination, suggests that the combining of threads has had a dampening effect on replies and overall give-and-take. That doesn't seem to me to be an indicator of success.
I'd vote for de-linking the posting of Craigslist finds and similar posts and returning to the pre-existing practice of letting each post stand on its own. In addition to increasing the level of give-and-take on a specific post, this would offer the added benefit of allowing readers to quickly decide on whether or not to open a post based on the content of its title.
The combining of Craigslist posts in a single thread is an example of "fixing" something that wasn't broken.
