Title: So a Stornello and a SuperTen walk into a bar...
Post by: adventurelounger on August 31, 2016, 08:36:39 PM
Actually, they didn't walk into a bar. They rode to Vermont. From Connecticut. Via Massachusetts. Mostly on dirt.

Bikes are both mine; one for me, one for a riding buddy. Kinda like having a guest bedroom. With knobbies.

I call these two badasses the candystripe twins.

My pal on the Storny...

Me at my own private dirt road in VT.

Fully laden Guzzi...

And some typical, testosterone-fueled overconfidence.

Still, managed to make that hero section without a drop, break, or ripped-open oil pan.

Guzzi ran like a top. Not a hiccup or hitch, and hung with the Tenere fiercely.

Awesome trip. Awesome weather. Awesome bike(s). Awesome time. Awe-SOME!

I thought his name was Dead End.   Very nice first post!

Maybe I should change my screen name to Dead End Josh. It'd sound like I'm from a Clint Eastwood movie.

But I'm a candy-ass adventure rider. No camping, only motels/hotels. Thus, Adventurelounger. More on-brand for me.

No alcohol treads, ok.  :boozing:

Lovely pics and makes me think a NTX 750 in modern guise could be a seller to the right crowd. But the Stornello done good.

How do the two bikes compare? Was one preferable to the other?

I feel like a polygamist. Love both.

The Storny does have a few relative shortcomings, though, as an ADV-bike.  It has like 2" of rear suspension travel. So ruts and bumps on dirt roads are spine-whackers.

My riding buddy got obsessed for a bit with figuring out how to turn off traction control; I didn't mind it. On washboard, power cuts out but you just sort of stay on the gas and ride through it until the tractor starts tracting again. Just makes uphill action and excitement a little tamer.

But the Storny's low seat (low everything) is pretty confidence-inspiring on irregular unpaved surfaces. Like you're riding a minibike. If things get squirrely you can put a foot down. You get a sense that if you were to fall, it's a short way down. Unlike the Tenere, where you're riding way up in the clouds. Long way down.

We had to slab it a bit on day 3 to get back to CT; the un-faired Storny isn't exactly a party on the highway. The Tenere (with an added fairing-fairing) really is. You could take a nap or read a book on the Super 10 at highway speeds. It's that comfy. The Storny is more like riding a controlled riot.

Finally, for portage, the Storny gets low marks. I put a 25L Mosko Moto soft pannier on it, but the high right exhaust eliminates a dual option. Tenere a better pack mule.
Still, they're both nice asses.

Thanks, nice comparison and what I might have guessed. I have a Stornello and really like it.

Great trip report and pix.  Thanks.

I would like to add a Storny to my little harem.

But, as I am even more of a wuss than you profess, mine would only see unpaved roads when I got lost.

Actually, that's most every ride.  "How long can this rutted dirt path go?"  Usually far.  Very far.

Bill

Great pictures.

Looks like you guys had a ball.  The PDR is a fun ride as is the Bayley-Hazen in Vermont.

Far as I remember you hold the starter button with the engine running until the traction light flashes to turn the tc off

I've got the same Goldentyre Gt201 on my New SWM and really impressed with them

A very entertaining post, thank's for sharing.  Brought back memories of long ago off roading with my 305 super hawk scrambler.  Awesome indeed!

Downloaded our route from a friendly rider on ADVRider. We took Route 8 up to Winsted CT, then jumped on the Trans Mass Trail. Mostly dirt until Greenfield Mass, where we picked up the Puppy Dog Route (PDR) along the Green River. After crashing in Manchester (sleep, not bikes), spent all Saturday riding the PDR up past Silver Lake, and got as far as Montpelier. Then reversed the process Sunday, with a slab run from Montpelier to Brattleboro, and Trans Mass back to CT.

The Storny and Super10 are great riding mates.

Pretty darn nice! You can see what we rode on...and I thought the rear traction, in particular, was great. I only wish they were tubeless...

Great post!  That would have to be an interesting difference between the two bikes! :boxing:
