Title: A quake and no fracking
Post by: ITSec on September 01, 2016, 12:27:15 PM
Initial reports of a quite large quake (7.1 was the first reading) just off the north-east coast of New Zealand.

No word about possible tsunami effects, but the location does face some of the most populated parts of the country, including both Auckland and Tuaranga.

Here's hoping all is well, especially for our Kiwi friends.

There is a tsunami warning and there are some coastal towns evacuating. Doesn't appear to be too serious, wave heights between 0.5m to 2.1 m.
Must have been a pretty good shake but didn't feel it in Hamilton NZ where I live.

Just heard on the TV the tsunami beach warnings have been called off.

Turns out to have been high magnitude, but way deep - fortunately. The same quake closer to the surface could have been an extreme event. Sometimes, being three-dimensional is a good thing!

So far no tsunami generated.  The typhoons/hurricanes are currently drawing more interest.

I live on the East Coast about 300km south of East Cape. We were woken by a gentle rolling motion and one of the dogs growling. There was a tsunami warning as already stated but that has been lifted. Still aftershocks going on (haven't felt any) with the biggest about 6.2, No reports of injury or damage at this point.
Thanks for your thoughts.
