Title: Any other MGX-21 owners on here yet? I have questions.
Post by: Luap McKeever on September 07, 2016, 07:23:15 PM
If you own one, have you experienced the tank suck yet?  I'm thinking about yanking the canister out.

Well, this isn't CA, why suffer. It only runs better.

Yeah, I haven't yanked one since my 98 EV.  Don't even know where to look on this thing.

Is there any merit in contacting your dealer, maybe taking it back for fixing?  They can contact the MGNA and perhaps address the issue.  They need to know about it. That may help subsequent purchasers down the road....

In the latest parts for Cali14 it looks like it's on the front of gas tank. Don't have a list for the 21.

If you find the valve cut line just past it going to bike, remove lines on each TB manifold, run a line from one manifold to the other. Done   You can find all the rest later.

Being the curmudgeon that I am, if I paid that much for a brand new bike the dealer would dam well make it work right!  Just ask Doug in Watertown, he'll confirm that.

What if the dealer is not able?  What then?  Do you let the bike just sit with a fuel tank vent line problem?

Luap is dealing with a 300 mile round trip to a dealer, plus the loss of the day at work running his business.

Fixing a simple vent line ball valve issue will be quicker and cheaper for him to do it himself.

Known issue nick named "The Moaning Whale"  Many of the 1400 series do it.  Tank vent issue.

Then I raise holy hell until it's fixed, or I give it back and get a different bike.  With that kind of money things need to be right.  Doing it yourself empowers the dealer and the manufacturer to continue selling defective products.
I was in a similar position and at one point the dealer came to me and picked the bike up  to fix it.  You can be sure when the dealer was shouldering the expense and time the problem got fixed the first time.  As long as the customer is compliant to absorb the cost then you are going to find it is trip after trip until you give up and do it yourself.
In this case where it is a simple fix the dealer and/or manufacturer can at a minimum supply all the parts and materials needed to correct the defect.

A "free" warranty fix at the dealer will cost Luap hundreds of dollars in expenses.

Pulling the ball valve from the tank vent doesn't take much time, and doesn't require any parts.

But whatever.  Fight the good fight.  Blah, blah, blah...

Or just make the dealer fedex overnight the parts to fix it properly.

Luap, is it presently an issue, or are you just thinking ahead? I doubt it is any different than any other 1400. I have not had any problems with my Eldorado.

Yes it's happening. Especially on hot days. I'll contact them. They have to come fix the turn signal problem anyway.

How MUCH vacuum?
The valves in the system are actually supposed to keep a light vacuum on the tank from what I understand.

Yep.  My Cali Custom has been doing this forever.  Doesn't seem to induce any performance issues.  Just makes noise after the bike is parked.

I remember the first time my wife heard it - she walked in the house and asked 'What's wrong with your bike?'

I am completely wrong. It's not vacuum, it's pressure. Noticed that it happens on hot days and the pressure builds up from the sun. I just got off the phone with the head Guzzi guy Brad and he informs me that it is functioning as designed.  Evidently it's a very stiff valve. He said they could put a weaker valve in it.  But, if it's doing what it's supposed to do, I'll leave it alone.

The turn signal problem is because of a software glitch to do with converting it from KPH to MPH.  The system wasn't updated to include the MGX. They have the fix for me.

See, it's not a bug, it's a feature.  An audible pressure indicator. Not every bike has one of those..

I like that.

Right at 1000 miles and counting 👌

My Eldorado does that, I just walk out of the garage and shut the door.  It stops and the bike runs just fine.  No need to create drama over it, I think.  Luap you are right.

Is your fuel tank metal or plastic?  My 1200 Sport made weird sounds when the valve finally vented.  In the meantime, the fuel tank began developing bumps just over top the silver plastic 'wings' that amazingly disappeared after I removed the valve, and vented to atmosphere, as they do in the rest of the world.  I've been told (perhaps rightly or wrongly) that part of the USA emissions test is with the bike's engine off, 'x' amount of fuel in the tank, and the bike in an air tight chamber.  The test monitors the bike for bleed off of gasoline fumes.  To assure the bike passes this test, the manufacturers use valves that require high pressure to bleed off the vapor fumes.  True or not?  I don't know.

Tanks are metal Bob. Pressure build up makes the sound. Once stopped, the hot motor warms the tank/fuel. Expansion is making the vent system work. I have heard it on more than just the Calis.

You making the breakfast this coming Sunday?

There ya go.

I'm glad that Brad @ MGNA knows about the situation.  That was my point in my earlier post. We Guzzi folks are so accustomed to fixing everything that sometimes the dealer/MG may be very late in becoming aware of the problems and having the knowledge to help a few Guzzi purchasers who cannot or don't want to fix the problem.

I have seen this several times.  The swelling fuel filter/pump hoses from a few years back.  My local dealer didn't know about the problem.  I kept telling them and had to print off some pictures from the postings here on WG to take to them to show them the problem!  This affected Mr. Nevada's bike and others.

The shorting-out aux lights on the Stelvio NTX. Again, local dealer mechanics didn't know about it.  I went through the showroom with them and pulled the rubber boots off the new Stelvio bikes to show them how the wires were not positioned correctly and to show them the Big Fuse problem.

On a very few 8V bikes, there was a problem with a grub screw between the cylinder fins that plugged a drilled oil passage.  Some screws weren't installed properly and a very small oil drip would result.  Again, local dealer had a helluva time trying to find the problem.

Many examples of this are out there.

Other than Master Mechanic Guzzi Steve, too many of these dealer mechanics do not keep up with issues out on the road as voiced on a forum like WG.

I am glad that Luap contacted the dealer and MGNA on this gas tank issue. Sounds like they already knew about the issue. Even if we fix our problems, I think the dealer and MGNA needs to know about the issues, whatever they may be.

Having said all that, there should be a remedy for the pressurizing gas tank and resulting moan even if it is known and explained away by MGNA.

With all the people gawking at the sight of that bike, having them greeted by an ominous moaning sound might be a little too weird.
