Title: What else do you do for fun?
Post by: Moto Fugazzi on September 10, 2016, 02:00:01 AM
In the past few months, I've put more miles on my Longboard than on my motorbike. There's some really great parks in Milwaukee, and tonight my friend and I skated over 17 miles round trip.
Here's a short video of our shenanigans...

I've got one teen-ager and two toddlers (2 & 5) so much of my time is spent being a family man. This time of year it means a lot of time swimming, kayaking, canoeing, paddle boarding in the lake behind our house.

I've always been a gear head and I still enjoy turning wrenches, and general involvement with motor vehicles of all kinds.

We sold the boat when we moved here but I could see another in the future when the kids are a little older.

Jenn and I met at our karate club more than a decade and a half ago. I've been training in the martial arts for about 3 decades now. Most of that and my black belts are in traditional Shotokan karate, but I've also spent time over the years training in Judo, boxing, wrestling, Tae Kwon Do, and Kenpo. When we moved states two years ago we found a new club that was largely Shotokan based but that also has wrestling, MMA, & Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu programs and mixes a lot of that back into the karate which is nice.

Jenn and I also like skiing/snowboarding, scuba diving, and basically anything else that's active, but don't get to do much of those for obvious reasons.

Living so close to hundreds of thousands of acres of state and federal land I'm thinking we'll do more hiking and paddling as the kids get older.

Masticate, matriculate and meditate.

I applied many years ago for a truck driving job and one of the questions was what do you do in your spare time. My college educated brother gave me the three answers I posted. And I still got the job.

Have raced this vintage Formula Ford for way too long.  Takes about 1/2 my time, 2/3's of the extra money and we only race on really hot days.  Definitely not recommended.

I have to admit, I probably ride more than anything else, though it's often to places like this (when I can):

But my other real passions would have to be politics (yeah, I actually enjoy the process!) and underwater photography. Here are a few shots...

After a ten year hiatus from boating we'll be back on the water next season. Found a used Boston Whaler we like. Pretty much restored. Only motor boats we've owned have been Boston Whalers. This will be our third.

IT, should I assume you've got a serious underwater camera rig? My understanding is the biggest problem/challenge is the lighting.

For many years I used a simple Canon elph point and shoot in a basic dive case with removable light diffuser. Most of my photos just don't have sufficient light to bring out those colors. I console myself by telling myself they look more "realistic" or as relatively stark as I actually experience it in real time lol.

Maybe I'll get better gear someday.

I generally find myself doing what I love, working, creating and trying to keep customers happy. Here is a small sample of some  projects. I was fortunate to have my daughter working with me one summer and she started this page for me. Unfortunately I have 40 more years worth that are in albums and I have now idea how to put them on this page,

Not too serious - I've been using a Sea&Sea mid-range setup with a good strobe. I selected that one because it was my first UW digital and I wanted to learn with it. I had used 35mm UW for quite a while before that, going back to about 1985. Sea&Sea has always had a nice system for adding or removing lens adapters while underwater, so I could carry macro, standard, and wide lenses and use them all on one dive. Traditional film systems had to be set up for one kind of shooting for each dive, and it's a pain to be doing macro work when that whale shark swims past.

My next UW setup is going to be an Olympus OM-D EM series body (Micro 4/3) with a wide zoom (by land standards), likely a 7-14mm (35mm equiv 14-28mm) or a 9-18 (equiv 18-36). Given that water changes the refraction by about 35%, that puts these in the range of what acts like a 18 or 21mm to 40 or 50mm on a 35mm land camera. Add an externally mountable macro adapter and a pair of strobes (hopefully that also have LED continuous lighting for movies) and I'll be set. Now, that will qualify as a 'serious' UW rig

Thanks for all that.... Still more serious than what I've always used which is about the equivalent of a camera-phone (actually it couldn't hold a candle to a modern smartphone camera lol). Maybe when the kids are grown I'll upgrade.

Thanks Ken,  Yes, all my original designs and work. The dock gangway's designs I had checked by an engineer but were a standard design quite common around here. We fabbed each 40 ft. section in my yard and transported them to the site one at a time . The cribbing s we built the old fashion way at low tide and with manual labor. The whole job took three guy's five weeks.

I would have to respectfully reply that they aren't all fine. The Whaler method of construction uses very light outer skins. When you combine this with (inevitable) water entry into the foam core, it can make for a tricky repair

Agreed from that aspect, waterlogged Whalers are something I will always steer clear of. Haven't penetrated the hull of one yet. We don't leave them in the water and wash them down regularly so they get a good visual quite often. Not to mention we are probably more careful than most.

I've played keyboards in bands for many years.  Now with little kids around, I've tried to replace that with solo piano gigs that end earlier in the evening.  It hasn't been an easy transition, schedule restrictions and lack of talent being the major obstacles.

roccoromanucci.com

Interesting thing for me, and the reason for this post, is the tie-in to riding a Guzzi.  I've ridden to piano gigs on various different motorcycles, but nothing gives me as much Mojo going into it as a Guzzi.

Guzzi=rockn'roll

Caveat: haven't tried it on a Harley, but it's possible they're even better.

It's peaceful until the lift dies and you're out of gliding range of an airfield.  Then things start to get interesting.

I was lucky enough as a youngster to get a glider ride over the New Hampshire white mountains. I'll never forget it , it was awesome. Pulled up with a vintage bi plane and soared around for about a half an hour. I anticipated it as being very quiet and peaceful but was surprised by the amount of wind noise and bumpiness.

I've played keyboards in bands for many years.  Now with little kids around, I've tried to replace that with solo piano gigs that end earlier in the evening.  It hasn't been an easy transition, schedule restrictions and lack of talent being the major obstacles.

Interesting thing for me, and the reason for this post, is the tie-in to riding a Guzzi.  I've ridden to piano gigs on various different motorcycles, but nothing gives me as much Mojo going into it as a Guzzi.

Guzzi=rockn'roll

Caveat: haven't tried it on a Harley, but it's possible they're even better.

I still play bass guitar, and that reminds me of when we opened up for Toots and The Maytals, and I showed up for the gig on my Griso with my bass slung on my back.

Hunting, fishing, cycling, canoeing...when I can find the time. We have a small farm and a mess of old folks to care for. We also enjoy the beautiful Gulf Coast beaches; they can be used just about year 'round.

Hunting, fishing, wood working, kayaking, hiking, bicycling, shooting, atv's, playing banjo, and believe it or not my work is quite fun, although demanding.

Build and fly RC helis and planes.

Me too! (well, not so much the helis).

My current project is a 110" wingspan P-47 Thunderbolt.  Best part is that it is powered by one of these (video is not me, but motor is the same).  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BAAGl7025fA  Anybody see why I also LOVE my Guzzi?

Regards,

Jeff

Thought it would be interesting to have some hives on the property.  Most of the pics are on the camera down in the shop....

Inspecting one of the hives back in May..... Not supposed to be building out like this, ladies...

First harvest beginning of June.  I've decided that right now, comb honey is the easiest thing to do.  They build their comb on very thin sheets of wax and when you harvest, it looks like a 'normal' frame of honey

But.... you get this

The wax sheet they build on is edible.  If you are harvesting for regular honey to put in a jar, you have frames with plastic sheets.

Its delicious. I got about 25 nine to thirteen ounce cut 'squares' of comb this year. Not much, but not too shabby considering I only pulled off one hive.  I have three hives so far, will probably split one later this month.

I need to bicycle more, otherwise I've played with Corvettes since I was 7 years old.....started with 1:24 then into 1:1 scale as I got older.

Scratch dog bellies, cook, take naps.  In that order.
