How do you get the damned thing off?
I'm trying to install the factory rack and bag. It arrived with no instructions but I found some online.
It says remove three button head screws each side. Then there are two socket head screws underneath the mudguard. I'm not sure I'm getting the right ones. there are two on each side near the hex not holding the indicator stems. It seems to be saying that the one nearest the indicator stem needs to be removed. Is that right?
I've done that, but the tailpiece doesn't want to move.It suggests it needs to be pulled outwards, and then down, but I'mafraid I'll break it if I put any more pressure on.
Who's done this?

Four spools, six button heads. I am away from the garage so removing the black plastic cover on top held by two weird hex bolts may or may not be necessary.
Pull the front wings of the tail piece out an inch or so and then wiggle while tugging it backwards.
It's a tight fit over the taillight. If it is really stuck some silicone spray or spray wax/polish in the cracks might help.
Drilling holes in my brand new tailpiece was not my favorite part of Griso ownership but I have done it to three bikes with good results.

What are they?
I removed 6 button heads, and 2 socket heads underneath. I wiggled and pulled and pulled and wiggled. I think I must have missed some fastners - but which ones?

Hey Trog, under the seat. For bungee hooks I guess. You only need to remove two according to instructions but I take out all four. Ally in color, Allen key to remove.

Did you take off the black plastic beauty cover?
Concentrate on the taillight. It snaps into place there.

The bungee things? They have to come off? I thought the instructions were pointing at the socket head screws. So lets get this straight.
3 button heads each side.
4 bungee spools.
That's it? No socket head screws?
And the cover - do you mean the thing behind the seat lock? If so, yes, I popped it off.

Look at the instructions I linked to. it shows the spools, but it doesnt seem to be saying they need to be removed - surely its pointing at the socket head screws under the mudguard.

Socket heads are on the turn signals? Nope.
The linked instructions are good. I take out the second spools just because. The front of the piece needs to be flexed out then use force... Gently... It comes out backwards tilted a bit.

Yep, Roberto was just pointing out the small Allen's underneath. The spools do not actually hold the tail on but they do get in the way of removal.

Yeah tomorrow is great. I'm done for today.
But what are these allens underneath? Which ones need to come out? There are two on each side near the indicator mount, but then some more nearer the centreline of the bike. I'd really like to know which ones need to come out.

Spools come off because the rack mounts there. The plastic tail does NOT come off, you drill the plastic from the top to expose the threaded nut already there for the upper mounts to drop into. I seem to recall there were dimples in the tail to indicate where to drill. It's been a while.

It does if you want to see the circles molded into the underside that show you where to drill and how big to make the holes. I did it freehand with a spade bit because I was too lazy to go to the store and get a nice one. It is O.K. I would put it on the drill press with a forstner bit if I did it again.

Wow, I missed quite a few. I see what you mean by socket heads now. Ten fasteners total. It will be easier to remove when it isn't bolted to the bike. :grin:

You could be right!
That still doesn't show exactly which are the relevant screws under the mudguard, but i removed a total of 8. I think the ones i was missing are the two that engage the tabs in the middle behind the tail light. No wonder it didn't want to move.
The guy at Twiggers suggested drilling a pilot from the inside and then using a spade bit from the outside. I was going to do it with a cordless drill. I do have a drill press. What do you think?

It does if you want to see the circles molded into the underside that show you where to drill and how big to make the holes. I used a forstner from the outside. I don't recall removing it. But I had instructions so maybe I had a template. That part I don't remember.

Here is what I did. Drill a small pilot hole first. Come from the bottom side so you can center the drill bit in the provided dimples. (I actually used a nail set/punch to put a small hole to prevent drift) After the pilot hole is drilled, turn the tail piece over so you will drill from the good/top side of the tail piece. (to avoid any chipping on the good side.). I also used a spade bit and cordless drill on mine. Worked fine.
Also, be sure to hold the tail piece against a block of wood (2x4 works good) for drilling all holes. Way more stable and helps with chipping. You can also put masking or painters tape over the area to be drilled to help with any scratching and chipping.
This is easier with a helper to help hold while drilling. I also used a smaller bit than what the instructions called for, by like a size or two. (5/8ths rings a bell). As recommended here, or at Guzzitech.

I think i'll go for that process - pilot from the inside, then spade from the outside.
The one thing i'd find helpful is a better explanation or a photo of the underside of the mudguard showing exactly which screws need to be removed. I don't want to take out anything that I don't need to,that will complicate reassembly.
The more astute of you will realise I am being a bit of a pussy over this. I will get over myself in time, and will steam in there with allen keys blazing. But if you could point me at the right screws...

I think the only other screws to remove (other then the obvious ones around the outside) are the 2 located underneath the tail light itself. Towards the front side of the taillight. (Chrome/silver head like others, only smaller.). They are about 1.5" apart. I think those are the ones you need to get.
This is all from memory, sorry if I'm wrong. Play around a little bit. You'll get it. When The tail section is loose, you will know it's loose. Don't force anything.

Yes - I know Paul. In fact I bought the bike from him. But Hersham's too far for a job like this! Corsa Italiana were a lot closer to me when they were in Colliers Wood.
