Title: Norge 8v Fly and Ride Tools Needed
Post by: Irn on September 13, 2016, 06:05:15 PM
Looking at a potential fly and ride for a 13 Norge. It will need some service at a friends house nearby, though he is lacking in the tool department.  I need to be able to do the following;

Change Oil, CARC and Transmission Fluids
Brake Pads Front
Valve lash check.

If one of you kind folks would give me a list of the exact tools needed, ie size of the drain plug bolts, etc I can pack only whats needed.  Will bring a full set of metric hex to get at the tupperware where relevant, just trying to pack light.

Thanks

No point in changing the valve lash unless you can balance the throttle bodies and reset the TPS at the same time.

Is the bike new? If so just ride it home and then do the job there. Only thing really worth doing is swapping out the pads. I'd recommend EBC HH, they make a world of difference.

If you do check the valve lash and change it don't forget to pull the main fuse or disconnect the battery for a few seconds after adjustment to clear the trims.

You'll need a 17mm wrench for the drain plugs, 8mm for the lock nuts on the rocker arms, 7mm allen if you're taking the calipers off( which might not be necessary haven't changed my pads yet) and that complete set of allen wrenches you mentioned earlier. Also a 25mm or 1" socket to remove the dipstick fitting & a long skinny funnel really helps with the oil refill. You'll also need a 16mm or 5/8" spark plug socket with a long extension & a 24mm socket to turn the crank. It is super easy to ruin the stock spark plug caps so be careful. If you look closely there's an air passage at the back of the head you can stick on long thin screw driver in to lever them off. Unless you are drastically exceeding the 6200 mile service recommendation I wouldn't worry about the valve clearance. Don't forget to drain the oil out of the airbox drain tube. It's right behind the brake pedal.
Hope you like the bike, I really love mine.

Thanks for the information, details Norge 8V is in Pittsburgh from a board member.  I'm in San Francisco.  I have an old friend in the Cleveland area, known him since Jr. High, but we have not seen each other in way too long. Plan as of now is to take a cheap red eye over the weekend to Cleveland, and drive down to Pittsburgh to pick the bike up Monday and head west visiting friends and family in St. Louis, Denver, Grand Junction and a possible detour to Bozeman depending on weather.  The bike is rough, some missed service intervals but it has a new motor. New motor is due for 1k service and it needs front brake pads.  I was going to tackle the simple stuff, fluid changes and front pads and let the dealer in Cleveland or some other suggestion along the route do the valve adjust, TPS, and sync,,,,unless one of you along the route.....Plans still are not final, waiting to hear from my friend in Cleveland, if he is not around, I'm going to pass.  I sold my Breva 750 a few years back and ride a BMW F800ST which I just love.  Don't really need the Norge, but wanted to head out on the road one way to renew some relationships.  I guess that's what happens when your own odometer hits 60!

You could make an appointment at the Guzzi shop in Cleveland and have the bike serviced before the ride home.

Thanks for the invite to the Twin Cities. MSP is my wife's hometown.  The dealer in Cleveland seems amazing, we had a nice chat.  Use to doing my own wrenching, and he is closed Monday and I'm on a schedule.  Might be best just to let them do the work.

.... more than service, a major inspection and the availability of the right parts before taking a cross country trip on a bike that you've never seen before.

Needs new pads?  I'd take a set but look at the existing ones before doing any wrenching.  Same with the fluids.  Check the levels but let the dealer in Cleveland do the change.  Why?  It's a messy job on the road or in someone else's garage.  The transmission fluid is particularly messy due to access.  It's easy enough to pull the inspection plugs and confirm you have oil in the tranny and rear drive, also to check the dip stick for engine oil.  Then engine oil only has 1K miles now and you would run that up to 1500 by the time you get to Cleveland.  To do the job right you would need to source 10W60 oil, that's a PITA.  You will be traveling at a great time of year.  Nevertheless, you will need to carry gear for rain, hot weather, and cold weather.  I'd want to travel with more clothes and less tools.

When you get home make sure you grease the swingarm bearings.

Hi Folks, thanks for all the great advice.  Be sure to check the details, and just as I was about to purchase my one way ticket I decided to phone the nice folks at AAA at a local Pittsburgh office re title transfer and temporary transfer plates.  30 day transit plates not a problem, $65, out of state drivers license, and proof of insurance on any motorcycle.  When I did this a few years back in Colorado the fee was $12, 60 days transit tag BUT you needed an insurance card ID for the actual bike that was being tagged.  Here was the hang up, seller was paying off loan this week, but PA State DMV takes a min. of 7 to 10 working days to issue a clear title with no lien.  No clear title, no out of state transit tags.  I will keep you posted..... Trip is postponed.
