My first thought was that this could replace a Double Wasp - then I saw that central casting! There is way too much metal there, beautifully machined though it is, to use this in anything that gets off the ground. It may have 11.9 litres of displacement, but at only 50HP per cylinder output (I think he said) it just doesn't have the power-to-weight ratio. He mentioned using it in an airboat, which might work - but put some ballast forward!

I would cut the guy some slack, it is a prototype. Though I built and flew my own airplane, I never built my own engine, so I keep my mouth shut.

I don't think he has any intention of using in an aircraft, only an airboat. I'm not qualified to critique his work - his skill set is waaaay beyond mine (and likely just about everyone else's here).

The question is, where did he get all those parts? 7 large motorcycles worth of top end parts, plus one very large Al billet.

a lot of Yamaha's woke up in a bathtub of ice with a note to call their mechanic.

That's hilarious  :thumb:

He has eliminated at least 50% of potential oil leaks, where's the fun in that?
This is from the oil coated one working on R2000 m7.
IMO he would be better off with a supercharger rather than a turbo, but its his project and I wish him well.
Love his machining.

I guess we can call that a water brake dyno?

How about a Radial in a pickup truck?

FWIW, that crankcase is not billet. It is cast. Take a look at the area around the tappet bores. Nice fillets and radii. Not what you would see if machined.

Good catch. The "shroud" is machined, maybe from billet, maybe from a cast piece. Regardless that's a big chuck of metal to be machining on.

How about a Heron head V7 based 18 cylinder radial? If we just pool our resources....

Put the most inefficient head design that Guzzi has inflicted on the public on something that needs a high output at low RPM. What could possibly go wrong?

What's the mileage like when you have more displacement than gas tank volume?

Nah - this is how to put a radial engine in a motorcycle

Was not the Heron head developed specifically for radial aircraft engines? Very efficient at moderate rpm but high revs expose the lack of adequate air flow. Not a problem with a 3k redline.

I've seen the inside of a few aircraft engines I have never seen a Heron head. Far more likely to be used in mass produced Diesels as it makes the head simpler and stronger generally if your using diesel you don't give a rats about weight.

Again, the Merlin is a Heron design.
