Title: 2001 EV experts wanted
Post by: sdcr on October 11, 2016, 04:58:15 PM
There is a nice 2001 EV for sale nearbyme, that I'm interested in.

Can you folks who know, give me the lowdown on this year EV?

Is this a year for the Hydro motor?

The bike has Spoke wheels, any issues?

Not sure what type of clutch it has, single or dual plate?

Anything else to look out for on a 2001 EV?

thanks in advance.

I waited for someone else to respond, I had a 98 EV a great bike with the tubeless wheels, cruise all day at 80 mph but I sold it because it was too new for me.

Solid lifters, sadly. I love the hydraulics.
Tubeless spoke wheels.
Dual plate clutch.

Wayne,

So is the dual plate clutch the preferred set up?

The 01/02 EVs are great, very powerful and they handle exceptionally well with a 140 section rear tire.

John,

No real issues that I know of.  Red and white?  Hydros were '03-'04.

Cam,

haven't seen it in person yet, but it's sort of a wine berry color.

Well, the single plate clutch had a lighter pull, and less weight, so actually most of us would have preferred it.
But, most of them failed.
The dual plates are generally very long life, unless a rivet cracks, or it gets oiled.

Wayne,

Thanks for the clarification. It don't mind a hard pull, versus a failed clutch   :thumb:

I should be able to look at this on Thursday or Friday.

Hmmm, probably this one.  Beauty of a color, but I thought it was only 2002.  See if it has the crinkle paint on the engine/tranny.  Might be  LATE '01.

That's what (used to be) mine looked like, titled as an 02. It's the best of the Tonti cruisers, I think. Markedly more powerful than our '00 Jackal.

I have a red and white 2001 EV . It has been a very good bike. If it is in good condition.....don't hesitate. It won't disappoint.

The '01's had a recall for the addition of a second cable on the throttle, making it a pull pull setup. Might have been the last year for drain plugs at the bottom of the fork tubes, or maybe through early '02. Seat was still cut out underneath for big puter but it went to a smaller unit under the left side cover. (Just left you some extra space for "stuff" External fuel pump, and as others mentioned, dual plate clutch, tubeless wheels. All things considered, a very good year for the Cali series, particularly the EV's.

I hope to check this out today or Friday, depending on the owners schedule.

Only niggle might be the crinkle engine paint peeling off.  But that's purely cosmetic, and I've seen some that were worse than others.  Guzzi's fix at the time was to either pull the engine/tranny and correct it, OR give the customer a full set of HB bags and racks.  Guess what most Guzzi riders went with?

hmmmm, I do see a set of bags attached in the picture.

From the only photos I've seen so far, it is not clear if the black engine paint has started to peel.

Why chance screwing up a good engine?

That was the wrinkle black engine paint on the 2002 model bikes.

What years were affected with the lower triple clamp cracks ?

Oh yes, I had forgotten about that.  I want to say late '03 build as '03 and '04 EVs.  I recall looking at the stamping under the lower tree on our '04 EV Touring.  Or was it the 2000 Bassa...? ? ?

Not certain if there is sufficient history here Mike to look that up, you would prolly know better than anyone.

The '01 and follow EVs are great rigs.

Good luck on the look-see sdcr.

Check the VIN.  If the 10th digit is a "1", it's a 2001.  If the 10th digit is a "2", it's a 2002.

The pictured bike looks to me like a 2002 model.

My 98 had the throttle stick at mid-way one day, on investigation the linkage was catching on the seam of the air-box,
I guess the factory fix was add another cable, all I had to do was re-position the throttle bodies and air-box.

Man, you guys know your stuff, glad I came to the right spot!

Thanks for the tip on the VIN, as to whether its 01 or 02.

Do not buy that bike. What a POS.  Instead, let me know where it's at so I can go get it before it is sold to some unsuspecting soul.

FWIW, I've always loved this year model/color combo.  My previous statement is a joke by the way.  I've missed my EV ever since I sold it.  I will own another someday.

Get it, ride it, love it.  One of the best Guzzis ever built.  Put a Swanee fairing on it, throttlemeisters and ride that sucker from daylight til dark with all smiles.  It demands to stretch its legs.

Okay, now I'm going to feel guilty if I don't get it.
Btw, it also has a Corbin seat

I bought an 01 EV about 5 years ago. It had 70,000 miles on it but I got a good price and it was set up well with all the bags and a Swanee fairing. It had been sitting for a while so there were a few minor issues to fix. I now have 108,000 miles and it seems like it just keeps getting better and better. I recently bought a 2012 Norge (with the roller tappets) but I'm not letting go of the EV. I like riding each of them equally. The pictures I've seen on this thread looks like an 02. I think the 01 had different rims than the 02. Both are tubeless spolked rims but I like the 01's better. No crinkle paint on mine. Mine was over charging the battery but I finally found the source of the problem and I came up with a cheap and easy fix.
