Title: Startups interruptus, is this ok?
Post by: Huzo on October 11, 2016, 10:56:10 PM
I think this is ok but would like to get the word from wiser heads. After reading all I could on startus interruptus, I came to the conclusion that the addition of a relay was not necessarily warranted, but a good idea that can do no harm even if not totally necessary, but here's the thing. My solution was to take out the yellow wire from the plug into the relay and seal it off, then run a (fused) larger gauge wire from the battery, fit a new female connector and just slide it into the existing plug, and re fit the plug back to the relay. This does not have the advantage of a relay, but notwithstanding that, have I done anything fundamentally wrong? The starter failed in Rome while visiting the Collosseum and I swore (a few times actually) that if I got away I'd do SI, when I got home.

The startus interruptus fix does not require adding a relay.  It just requires supplying the relay contact that sends power to the starter solenoid fused 12v directly from the battery , rather than through the ignition switch.

Thanks Triple Jim, my concern was that it seemed a simple solution compared to some I'd seen, so was just being careful, thank you very much.

First let me applaud your choice of venue for the failure.  If you've got to have a breakdown, it might as well be at the actual roman coliseum.

Then no, you did nothing dangerous or wrong.

Thanks RK, good to hear that from you, and hope you're enjoying yourself. Also I've looked at a Go Pro video I shot over the trip and can see clearly the panel during the apparent anomaly, still not sure if I just panicked my guts out or not, but resolved to make a fix when home in Oz.
