Love to have one as well.  Looked at a green / black back east in 2014.  It was decent, but the guy wanted $15K for it.  - - and I did not think it was worth THAT much...

For another perspective, this "nut & bolt" restored example seen at the 2013 Datil, NM Guzzi Rally reportedly went for $20K...

Looks like a Resto-Mod, to me...

But, the 1000S have been selling for some very high prices over the past few years.

And remember, there are only a handful in The USA.

I don't 😀
The 750S looked svelt and are the real thing for me. The 1000s remind me of parts bin special not particulrly well done: fat and unstylish. Ouch!(http://www.motorcyclespecs.co.za/Gallery%20C/Moto%20Guzzi%20750S3.%20%201jpg.jpg)

Other than the instrument pod I think it's well done and quite stylish. However, having ridden one back when they were new, I don't quite understand what all the "fuss" is about and why anyone would pay the kind of price they are bringing. <shrug>

The 1000S is a neat bike, but for that kinda money you could get a Centauro, a V11 sport and a Griso ! (2 valve griso ).

Hi Steve!

I've owned 3.  I still have 2.  They remind me of a slightly taller and heavier V7 Sport.  I own those too.
Nobody wanted the 1000-S when it was new because it was expensive.  I had the chance to buy a new black/orange bike when it was about 3-4 years old.  Dealer couldn't sell it. #44 and #48 seen here.

Best regards,
Tom

I uncrated and did the PDI on one or two when I was at Midway.  We usually took each new bike out on our test ride loop to reveal any "mistakes" Luigi let slide at Mandello.

I wasn't impressed with the 1000S, either.

My riding buddy and I test rode a 1000S and a Strada at the Illinois Rally back when they were new. The Strada was underwhelming, the 1000S just felt so right! It was the essence of a sport Guzzi...

I have a '91.  The friend in Honolulu has a '93.  Different engines. IIRC.

As jetted by the factory the 91 in the last year if the big valve motor was totally strangled to get past EPA and ran like crap. Properly jetted, a very different quite wonderful animal. You can't have mine at any price.

1st thing to do is remove the airbox.
Jetting changes are necessary.  DYNA coils that Franz Nachod/Spare Parts Company suggested made a tremendous difference.  I have them on both. There are also European market cross-overs on both.  They are "wide open" and allow the cute "shark gill" covers on the connection from the headers to the mufflers to be retained.  Anyone ever notice those?

FWIW; The 1100 Sport that came later got the same airbox-otomy treatment.  While it was on the Dyno we learned that the airbox, which was claimed to be a ram-air setup, was causing all of the running issues and huge flat spot.  Pressurized Dellorto? LOL.
That bike ran like a scared rat once dialed in.  Beautiful curve on the Dyno with no flat spots anywhere.

There is a 91 Lemans on eBay with a buy it now for $4800 with no takers as of this morning.  Basically, it is a big valve 1000S with the obvious differences of tank, side panels, etc., so this comes down to aesthetics. If the Lemans was dressed in 1000S clothing it would be gone in a blink at that price, just like the one last week with a buy it now at $16K.

I have always found the negative comment that the 1000S is a "parts bin bike" to be humorous given the fact that Guzzi made then, and now a bunch of parts bin bikes.  If anyone wants to put together a cheap copy of a 1000S, just snap up a big valve 91 California for chump change the next time one shows up in a classified, add some readily available parts with some red or green paint and you can have a copy for less then $10K.

And like Bob, I wouldn't sell mine either.

my friend is the one that sold his $16k 1000s.  i just found out this weekend, i thought he'd be buried with that bike, but sometimes life gets in the way.  i was shocked to say the least at how easy he got that price.  he put it up at a price he knew was high because he REALLY didn't want to sell but kinda had to.  the guy contacted him immediately and like that it was sold, the buyer asked what his best price was and he said 16k, then the guy said ok.  he already regrets it, but i do have that barn find $500 lemans 1000 that i may give him to satisfy his hunger

I kept the airbox on my Sport 1100, but added Keihin FCR41 carbs.

I think that add was up and disappeared in an hour. Looked like a really nice bike too.

I'm thrilled for those who purchased the 1000S when nobody cared. The Daytona was the bike everyone wanted and Guzzi's teasing with prototype photos pre-release killed dealers while buyers waited for the 4v. A very rare black/orange big-valve '91 sat in the window of the Guzzi dealer in Tucson for years. The side facing out began to fade, so it was turned around until it matched!

Good eye Rocker. The 'nuts-n-bolts' green frame JJ posted above was a parts bin deal. Still fetched lots of $$$, much to the seller's delight. The 1000S turned into a great riding investment.

In comparison, the 1991 1000CL relisted on ebay is an absolute steal. I'll take the big valve, updated Lemon with wind-tunnel tested body over a S3 wannabe any day. Few agree tho-

LMV is pretty rare too.  YEARS ago a fellow I know rode one cross country.  FWIW; Another friend rode his 1000-S cross country too from VA to CA!  The hard part is he's about 6'3".
Not what I'd call a comfortable ride for that distance.  A "V" would have been more suitable.

At first glance, I would check-out the brakes on this one. The picture of the rearset brake lever angle to the rod of the master cylinder does not look optimal... probably why the owner states that he disconnected the integral braking system -but the front brake master cylinder look stock and therefore a possible mushy feeling upfront  :embarrassed:

Agree. It's a mess and the seller (who claims to know little about Moto Guzzi or motorcycles in general) is repeating the same old bogus info about the 16" front, etc. The parts that come with make it attractive, especially the removed exhaust parts. The belly pan is also gone, but repops are available.

Spotted in May 2015 - at our annual Cottonwood, AZ N.A.R. - - another beautiful example! :thumb:  :1:

This belongs to the legendary Bob Dickman from SOCAL.  I believe it is all original with >40K on the clock, as I recall.  Beautiful bike...and ridden often!

The rear rails on the frame are kicked up, easy modification. Some would say that is sacrilege, but easy to return to original location. Well, easy for a good welder.

Well, it's true that not everybody wants one, but that doesn't mean we don't like them.

Most of mine aren't fetching premium prices (Le Mans 1000 w/16" wheel, Sport carb) and while it would be better (for me) if they did, the situation benefits serious buyers. Many machines are taken out of use because of risk, and I get it. Glad most Guzzis - even collectible ones, are still ridden, which IMO makes them even more valuable. Moto Guzzi was always known as a rider's machine. That's a fabulous heritage!
