Title: Ride to Muskogee OK
Post by: LowRyter on November 01, 2016, 06:08:38 PM
some of us are riding to Muskogee to see the Batfish a real submarine that patrols the Arkansas river (well I am lyin' about that part).  This Saturday

Plan to eat at Charlie’s Chicken lunch buffet in Fort Gibson which opens at 10 AM, before the tour of the Batfish.  We should arrive at Charlies at or near 11 AM, before  the lunch rush.

Here’s the scope on our annual ‘ride to the Batfish’ just outside of Muskogee on this coming Saturday (Nov 5th).
After the Batfish Tour, a few of us will ride over to the north end of 10-killer for pie at Big Reds.
After pie, we’ll ride the east side of 10-killer back up to I-40, and then continue on to Hwy 9 for a ride over the Eufaula Dam, and Hwy 9 back to the OKC metro area.

Batfish ride update………………If it rains on Saturday, or otherwise bad weather, then Sunday is when we go. If Sunday is bad too, see ya next year!

Departure KSU from gas station at 2nd street and I 35 in Edmond will occur at 8:30 AM if we go on Saturday Nov 5th or Sunday November 6th.

When you said you are going to see the Batfish I had to stop and think a bit. I figured it cant be the same 637 class nuke boat I rode when I was in the Navy. What would it be doing in Oklahoma? I know it has been long decommissioned. I was also involved in an op with them-something about NR-1 and some other stuff that never happened and I was never there. Are you talking about the Batfish SS310 -the Balao class WW-2 boat that sunk 3 Japanese submarines? If so, that would be an extraordinary experience to tour that boat. I might have to put that on my list of things to see.

Yes Wavedog , that Batfish . It's been here for years , we had to have something to keep those pesky Texans at bay
If I'm in town we can meet up fellas .

Sent from a submarine in Oklahoma

Careful, Dusty - if they can patch that rust on the USS Texas, they may send it up river on the hunt for you!

We have something equally daft here. In Holbrook in NSW, a bloody long way from the sea, we have an Oberon class sub in a park!

There is a story behind it. Mr Google can probably find it for you.

This little day trip sounds like a good one!  Weather looks to be really good for it also. I'd like to tag along if you'll have me.

Turbo Tom (my physical therapist) is leading the group with the BLHOT, RAT and Classic Guys (and Guzzi guys hanging along). Looks like he's scoped out dinner and desert and a ride home.

Tom was a submariner in the '60s and does a walk through narration tour.

The Batfish was like "Run Silent, Run Deep".  These guys got more kills than any sub in the war, 15 sunk, 3 subs sunk in 3 days, a destroyer and mine sweeper.  You can learn a lot from the 'net.

Pete, there is an entire story on getting it there.  It was towed up the river which the Corps had to lower 3 ft to clear the bridge in Little Rock, and then they had to dig a channel to get it where they could which is short of it's intended place.

Darren, one more thing, I am getting a new rear tire put on the Greenie.

For anyone with even a passing interest in such things, "In the Course of Duty" by Don Keith is a very good read, recounting not only the wartime history of the Batfish, but the implausible story of how she wound up in Oklahoma.

dusty might let you camp in his backyard.  I say "might", I can't speak for Dusty.  I'd slip hundred dollar bill.

Okay, let me think this through. I think it would be a great time if Fubar and I could get together sometime in the future to ride down, and yes get a motel for us old guys.
My only concern is that I was not aware of the Batfish being there and I am certain that many others are not either. So...if I ride with Fubar and say we stay at a motel, have a few drinks, someone asks where we are riding and we say to Oklahoma to see a submarine. Will we be taken away by the men in white while wearing one of those funny jackets?

You should've been taken away a long time ago.  Maybe they'll finally get you this time.

That why I should go with Fubar so he can distract them while I escape again.

good plan John.

Crazy man with a rational plan.

I like that.  Always hang around someone crazier than you, so they won't notice you.

Thank goodness we all have Dusty.

Dusty better have his HiPo friend to put up a road block.  I hear Micheal D is heading to lunch at the chikin joint.  Better keep the riff raff away.

What would Merle Say?

WWMS?

Thanks TW for getting the photos.  I did a 280+ miles RT.

One thing that comes to mind.  We're viewing and old relic.  It was a survivor and victor in the great war.  I think it is a physical representation of the men that made it succeed.  Some luck, lots of skill, hard work and more stress for sure.

I hate to see suffering in the world.  I hope in the future that we'll see fewer and and fewer Batfish and the struggle and cost of people they represent.
