Title: Are women under represented here ?
Post by: Huzo on November 11, 2016, 01:55:39 PM
There's no particular reason I ask other than curiosity, but what % of our members are women ? It's possible of course that because we have forum names, that there's more than I think. Would the % of female forum members be less than that of female (Guzzi) riders in general ? If so, why would that possibly be, and I'm not heading anywhere in particular with the question. Do I remember correctly that Hardaspie is a woman rider ? I can only think of one, but then I haven't been here long.

Interesting question.  (I'm a guy BTW, so not one of the riders you're wondering is here or not).

Kind of begs the question - under-represented compared to what?  The population in general?  Riders in general?  You mentioned among Guzzi riders.  Guzzi riders in English-speaking countries?  All over the world?  In Italy?

I think under-represented compared to the population is a given.  But for the other comparisons, there don't seem to be too many measures out there.  Here are a few answers, though not many:
http://www.womenridersnow.com/pages/About_Women_Riders_Now.aspx
which points to Motorcycle Industry Council statistics that show 14% of motorcycle owners in the US are women, and that 25% of riders in the US are women.  No brands though.

Another article that points to the same MIC stats:
http://www.revzilla.com/common-tread/number-of-women-riders-hits-all-time-high

This shows something like 5% of Indian riders are women:
http://www.bbc.com/news/business-19697067

But all of this of course begs the question of how many ride Guzzis

Under represented implies that there are biker women who do not belong to the group that some how should be on this board.  How many women Guzzi owners are there or for that matter what is the % of women who are bikers of all brands? My experience is I do not see many women out there riding anything bigger than a large scooter. So my answer would be they are not under represented here because there is a very small % of women who ride. And an even smaller % who rider Guzzis. Before the latest V7 models how bikes did Guzzi produce that the average 5'6' women could comfortably sit on much less handle? Esp. with all the scores of Japanese bikes available for those with smaller frames.

My guess would be that women are represented in proportion with women Guzzi owners.  The Ninja 250 board seems to have a higher percentage of women members than this board, which makes sense, since as Harvey was getting at, Ninja 250s are probably more popular among women than Guzzis, due to their small size and light weight.

Absolutely underrepresented.  To be fully represented, every female Guzzi rider would have to be on the board.  I know two who are not.  Not every male Guzzi rider is here, either, so they're underrepresented as well.

Signing up here is an act of self-selection.

It's a pity that there are not more women here. I sorta understand, as this can seem like a boy's club at first glance. I've always been fascinated with other folk's opinions...a woman's perspective is always a welcome addition to this forum.

We do have a gender and generation gap situation on WG . Now , some of this is simply because we are largely a bunch of old GUYS with our own long held opinions . However , some of it can come from misunderstandings . Most of us probably don't really have a problem with hipsters , or young folks in general , but things get said in jest , or as a means to poke fun at ourselves , and get misinterpreted by a young member . We had an incident recently where a member completely misunderstood a statement that was intended as a gentle poke at us curmudgeons , and the guy left in a huff , despite our best efforts to explain what happened . Probably the same with some of our female WGer's . Not criticizing here , we are actually a decent bunch , but at times , well , we do need to be cognizant of the fact that as a subculture inside of a subculture , alienating folks is counterproductive.

I'll shut up now , carry on .

Because of screen names, and the fact that we don't keep track, we don't really know.

There are more women here than most of you realize.  They just keep a lower profile than most of the d00ds.

In fact, there are many members, men and women, who are here and browsing but keep a low profile.

If you think about what Rocker is saying here , my screen name , and what I sign with are not any indication of gender . Of course several of you guys actually know me , and fortunately (or unfortunately for me) no woman ever has been as , er , unattractive as this poor Okie

The women.  Maybe under-represented, but not under-appreciated!  I've been attending the Guzzi breakfast in NE Ohio at Mike's Place in Kent for over 6 years.  And truly appreciate the work the women put into making this chapter of Guzzi work.  Actually there's little or no gender difference.  Just a great group of Guzzi riders that don't much give a damn whether a member is male or female.

I don't see any problem here.  How many women do you see at a Guzzi Rally?  And those you see are mostly married to the guys who ride Guzzis.   Some are just passengers(like my wife most the time). Nothing against women but there just aren't that many that ride their own bike.

Now at scooter events there are more women who ride just like the men.   So what sex you are doesn't matter in the least.   All that matters is if you enjoy doing the same thing.  :boozing:

Well then, if there are something like 10 female forum members and I can think of one (Hardaspie) who has posted recently, (interestingly it was about entry level motorcycling and the boys were happy to help), that would be 10% of forum members among women who have posted. Would the proportion of male members who post be higher than 10% ? IF that was true then you might conclude that the girls want to stand back and watch and feel that their input would not be welcome (unlikely!), are intimidated by some of the goings on (possibly), or feel out of their depth with respect to our experience and general fantasticness. Jeez you'd hope not ! Just thinking that some (not all) of us would enjoy our Guzzi life more if our wives/girlfriends were more invested in what we do, and that situation can be brought about more readily if you feel that your opinion is worth hearing and you don't have to defend everything you say when it degenerates into a slanging match. Now of course if the women began an on forum argument, then.... (no, just pretend I didn't say that). Just in the spirit of greater participation, (not precipitation!).

No nor do I Wayne, I don't see it as a problem I just wondered why, and I suggest that they may have more to bring to the table than serving coffee and making sandwiches in the cold at rallies. As you say Dusty, is it possible the girls could enlighten us, or rely on their men to speak for them ?

Huzo , the membership roles have been pruned down to about 5,000 , so let's say 4800 men . You can do some basic math and see that maybe 5% are active despite efforts to increase participation . Not sure it is due to "slang" , some folks are just shy . It is always a bit surprising to meet folks at a rally that know me from the forum , and yet rarely if ever post .

As has been noted, there are any number of factors - what portion of riders altogether are women, what kind of bikes attract what kinds of people, the fact that participation in a forum is a matter of self-selection and identification with others, and many more reasons.

There are some other important groups, demographic and otherwise, that are under-represented on this board, and perhaps among Guzzi owners and even motorcycle riders in general.

For example, there are far too few

I know I've missed some...

It's like the concern about "We all seem to be Old Guys.   What are we going to do to bring more young people into the "Guzzi Fold" (or "Classic Bike Fold", or any other "fold")?   The hobby is going to die out if we don't do something!".

The answer to that question is, I believe, "We don't need to do anything."   I mean, what did anyone do to bring ME into the motorcycling fraternity (hey look, a sexist term!)?   Nobody had some sort of "young people recruitment program" to make sure I got interested in motorcycling, or signed up on WG or anywhere else.   They built it, I looked, saw, and liked it, and signed up.  Simple as that.  It'll keep happening, and if it doesn't, so what?

Same for women, I suspect.   There's no "No Girls Allowed" sign on the treehouse door.   The women that participate here participate as equals, (although I do note that when a new female introduces herself, there's a lot of guys tripping over each other to hold the door for her, but you'll never get away from that).

At our last couple rallies, there were 4 or 5 women riding their own bikes in, and as many more riding pillion, and as far as I can tell, there's no "bar" to membership ...

I'm trying to wean myself away from the idea that if we don't have a due proportion of female or Irish or gay or black or Muslim or atheist or transvestite members in any given organization, then we're an "-ist" or a "-phobe" of some sort and it has to be remedied through a 'diversity' program of some kind ....

I agree with you though, that if any woman participating here sees some sort of "barrier" to participation that I (by definition, being a male) can't see, I'd like to hear what that is.   I suspect, though, they haven't got time to waste on it!

Well I guess it's all ok and we love each other and we can afford to make no effort towards tapping into a potential for a breath of fresh air that might be available. For the record, I don't care whether you're male or female as a member either, I just allowed for the fact that we might be more than a little self serving and insular.... But maybe not.

This post reminded me that I rode home from the 2011 Iowa National Rally with four women.  Three on their own bikes.  One passenger.  So three of the seven bikes were ridden by three of four women in the seven bike / eight person group.

The women were riding two Californias and one Sportster.  One of them is a member here, but doesn't post much.  The other two are lurkers.  The conversation just doesn't usually interest them.  Plus, they have real-world shite going on...

Being around here everyday, it's easy to forget that most Guzzi owners do not participate in the shenanigans at WildGuzzi.

I just got an email that you guys actually WANT to hear from a female.

I haven't posted on the board for quite some time but I have signed in and scrolled thru a few threads once in a while.

In case you didn't know,  I was involved in a car accident in May of 2014 and haven't really ridden since then.   I'm suffering from nerve damage in my neck and back.   I have sold my R100RT Beemer and 2 T3's.   The last T3 was sold just a few months ago.   Day to day tasks are painful and bike maintenance is almost impossible.

RE:    Women on the forum......I have always felt at home posting on this site and have gained a lot of valuable information from your replies.   I don't see the lack of women riders posting as an issue.   I don't think the number of females riding Guzzis is increasing at a significant rate.  Guzzi does not make a model that really draws a lot of female riders.    I've been in the club since the early 70's and the Norge was the first Guzzi in decades that I was really drawn to.   At 5'2", the Norge was just a pipe dream for me.   My V7 - although my lightest bike is also my tallest even after shorter shocks and the seat being cut down.  Next, although you do see a woman on a Guzzi, she doesn't necessarily work on her own bike,  some do but not all.   I think if a woman does not work on her own bike, she may feel the discussion board would have nothing to offer  her or that she may have nothing to contribute.   In my opinion, the posts here are not nearly as technical as those on the GuzziTech site.    Next, I think if  any rider (female or male)  would log into this site, they would eventually find a thread  that interests them.   I met 2 new Guzzi riders this past summer who never heard of this site.    If any of you guys have a significant other that rides a Guzzi.....ask them to join the site and read the threads.    Eventually, they should have an opinion or question they want to post or maybe even learn something.    If you're riding, you should know something about your bike.

Hi Dusty,

Have we met before?  I thought I had met you somewhere, but maybe not.  I would like to introduce myself to you.  My name is Georganne, aka Beaver.  I am just south of you in Texas and have been to Oklahoma many times.  Maybe we ran into each other there?  I wanted to let you know that I ride a Moto Guzzi and have ridden them since 2008.  I've had Jackals, Brevas and now a V7 Stone which, like Ambogal said, is my tallest bike. I'm only 5' 2.5".  I have traveled all over the United States, well the lower 48 states (many of them by myself), Canada, to a Moto Guzzi Rally, and I crossed into Mexico on a hand drawn ferry.  One cold rainy evening, I showed up on Ambogal's doorstep on my way to New Hampshire for Randy Tefft's first State Rally.  I am the Texas Rep for the MGNOC and hold a Guzzi Rally every year in Lindale Texas.  I would like to invite you to come down for the rally next year.  Maybe you'll remember meeting me.

No need to know how many of each (though there's at least one active forum member in each listed category, I know for certain!). They are under-represented by definition, because you hardly ever hear anything about any of these issues

Of course, they may just be people who enjoy the forum and support Luap's encouragement to keep the discussion on matters Guzzi-related (most of the time)... :thumb:

I had to give you a hard time for not remembering me, Dusty.

Huzo, I used to hang out on WG all the time, but too many other things take up my time and I don't get much posting time now.  I don't even get to ride as often as I used to.  :(   I've never felt intimidated or left out of the "boy's club".  I have been to a lot of rallies and have met a lot of people on this forum.  Can't get any better than that!

There is also Pam in Idaho who has ridden all over the US on her Guzzis. But before she married a Guzzisti she rode on other brand bikes too.

Have to mention Gerri Jenkins who has been riding Guzzis for at least 20 years near Portland, Oregon who has been a MGNOC rep. for at least 15? years putting on 2 Nationals +  multiple State rallies + other campouts with her 2nd Guzzi riding husband, Gary.

Moto Guzzi is blessed with a lot of hardcore, dedicated riders whether they are male or female here in the USA.  :thumb:

I've been riding MGs for 32 years and still have my 1st 1.

No need to know how many of each (though there's at least one active forum member in each listed category, I know for certain!). They are under-represented by definition, because you hardly ever hear anything about any of these issues

See the point is that you reckon there's too few in the categories you mention but you wouldn't necessarily know if the member had connections in that area. I thought that the proportion of female posters may be lower than the proportion of female members who ride but if that's not the case I'll remind all that the thread was posed as a question not a statement. There are thousands of issues that are under represented but that wasn't the issue.

Let's not beat ourselves up folks, every brand of bike could use more women riders. What's keeping the number of women riders down is partly the high price of motorcycles, difficulty of getting them serviced, and lastly a lot of motorcycles just don't fit. And yes, the "locker room" atmosphere of a some motorcycle groups, both online and 3D, doesn't help. but we don't see much of that here- You guys and gals have been real helpful to me.

But regardless, we keep coming back to the bikes themselves as the major factor in keeping women out of motorcycling. Harley sells a lot of bikes to women because they're low, but women riders pretty soon figure out that Harleys aren't real functional and stunt their riding. BMW sells a lot of bikes to women because they've got bikes with low seats that are actually comfortable to ride all day. But the BMW experience is quickly soured by the high cost of repairs- Just the recommended maintenance on a new BMW will easily cost over $1000 a year if you take it to a BMW dealer.

That leaves a major opportunity for Guzzi- The small blocks are already light, come up with low seat versions and keep the maintenance simple with dealers everywhere in case you need 'em, and they'd sell a lot more bikes to women and men!

I lurk here far, far more than I post.  In this forum, I have yet to find any of the negative BS directed towards women that I see all-too-often on other motorcycle forums. This ranges from patronizing attitudes, to misogynistic comments and cartoons, to frankly hostile comments. It's not happening here, or, at least, I'm not seeing it.

So it's not that ya'all are a bunch of jerks. :boozing:

The population here is a subset (people who post) of a subset (people who are interested in Moto Guzzis) of a subset (people who are interested in motorcycles) of the population.  There's just fewer women in that population than there are men.

Huzo, there a lot Guzzi owners that don't post on the forum.  As for the women, the forum may not appeal to them.  Some women that I know that ride Guzzi or have ridden Guzzi.

1)  Nuri,  NYC.  Sold her Breva 750 to get a BMW 650GS.

2)  Pam in N. ID & Ron sold their Guzzi's.  I think they're on HD's now.  I used her black & green  Cali 1100i to go to the WA National.

3)  Rebecca out here in Kona sold her Breva 750 that she bought from me.  She's not riding now.

4)  Cheryl near Moscow, ID rides a EV.  She use to have a SP1000.  Her husband Bill has a Jackal and a restored V700.

5)  Jen was mentioned.  She's in Seattle.  Her mom rides a VW trike 'cuz she gets to tow the trailer.  Jen is Brevagirl.  Her

6)  Cheryl in Kula, Maui rides a V7Sport.  Very fluid rider.  Her husband a smattering of Euro bikes.  His brother has a LeMans 850.

7)  Faye in Phoenix currently rides an Indian Scout but rides Richard's V7II every once in awhile.  Richard's Cali 1400 Touring is too big.  I  have her old T3 that she rode down from Alaska.

8)  Dee in Wenatchee has an EV.  IIRC.  She hasn't posted in awhile but works on her own bike.

9)  Marilyn in rides whatever is in the garage.  Her husband John bought Mtn. Bob's Jackal.  Was mostly BMW.  Has 2 GS & 100RT.  She'll be on that more.  Their daughter rides her own Monster 1000.  She liked the Daytona 1000 when John owned one.

10) Gerri in OR with husband Gary.  She & Gary put on the National in OR.  She has her own EV.

11)  I forget the lady that won the Long Distance award from NH.  She was on her own Stelvio.

12)  Alice, Ed's former girlfriend had a LeMans 850.  I bought her Daytona RS.

13)  Sue, I met her at the NV state rally.  Single in her late 20's from Reno.  Nice red V7II.  She rides around by herself.

14)  The instructor for MSF at Rutgers.  Forgot her name.  She has a Breva 750.  She influenced Nuri in NYC to buy her Breva 750.

Dee rides a # of bikes.  Some Guzzis, BMW or Honda.  Not really sure who owns them, her or her SO.

Pam & Ron rode their Guzzis pulling tent trailers all over the  US not too many years ago.

Andy and his wife in Indiana? both ride their Guzzis all over the place.

The only way I know this is I meet them @ Guzzi events.  A lot of Guzzi riders don't spend any time @ this forum.  If you want to know about them you have to go to MGNOC events.

The more names that people pull out of their....hats! The more I'm convinced that there are active riders that don't desire to post, male or female, for whatever reason. Either they don't feel they have anything to post that's worthwhile and some have said as much, or they don't feel that we've posted anything worth reading, one of which is demonstrably garbage and one just might be true, or something else...Huzo.

According to WRN, Women Riders Now and the Motorcycle Industry Council, 14% of all MC riders (drivers of MCs and not passengers) are women. http://www.womenridersnow.com/pages/more_women_riding_motorcycles_than_ever.aspx

According to this article in WRN, http://www.womenridersnow.com/pages/About_Women_Riders_Now.aspx

"And while the number of women riders continues to increase, those womenwhether they're new or experienced riders, passengers, or curious non-riders thinking about taking the driver's seatare not targeted by any large-scale national media outlet. The owner survey also revealed what type of bikes women prefer. Cruisers are the choice of 34 percent of female riders. Scooters rank a close second at 33 percent, followed by sportbikes at 10 percent."

From my perspective I tend to say city scooters are in a class by themselves as even those bigger scooter tend to not get out on the open road.
So maybe my perspective is wrong by limiting scooters as "non-motorcylers" even though they are on 2 wheels. But I think they are more likely to be used by city dwellers looking quick, cheaper mode of transportation that is easy to park and gets great gas mileage. The are not necessarily ridden by those who love the open road biking experience that surely dominates the conversation on WG. I am not trying to be a snob here. I am just making an observation that many scooters owners have a different reason for riding.
If 97% of MC magazines are male then one could extrapolate that an online forum like WG might fall in that range.
But like Triple Jim says their is more participation on Ninja 250 board due to women riding smaller bikes.

At Daytona Bike Week, Daytona Biketoberfest, and Sturgis I see large contingents of women riders. At TWO of Suches I see a smaller percentage. But I don't see very many Guzzi riders period.
That's why you get the startled looks and weird questions about your Guzzi when crowds of bikers are present.

Many older long time bikers are switching to maxi-scooters(like me) since they are easier to ride, maintain and give far better weather protection.  You just don't see many on the hiways...yet.  But as we all get older I predict that will change.  I've ridden my maxi-scoots to New Mexico, Colorado, Nevada, Idaho, California, Oregon, Washington so far.  :thumb: MG needs to come out with a maxi-scooter like BMW has.  :azn:

Is there anyone out the in WG land that does not own a motorcycle or has at least owned a bike or bikes in the past. Maybe there are some guys who are not riding now due to illness or age but they are bikers through and though.  Why would those (mostly women) who ride pillion as something they share with their partners give a care in the world about this esoteric group of almost all men who go on about everything from oil to the nuances between a V7 Sport and a 750S.

So Mtn. Bob sold his Jackle? I often wondered what happened to Mnt. Bob. He seemed to just suddenly disappear. Are you able to elaborate Tom?

I bumped this because there is a current post that made me think of this old chestnut.
Not trying to ignite debate because everyone’s opinion is as valuable as everyone else’s.
But statistically speaking..
If 15% of bikers are women.
Then 15% of Guzzi riders should be women
So
Why aren’t 15% of WG members women ?
If there were 200 active posting members, there’d be 30 women posting. Surely that would be somewhat a “breva” in some respects ?
They have a lot to say that’s worth hearing..(or reading)

See, here’s another thing.
Please take this in the spirit that I mean it and not run down a tangential path, that’s how trouble starts.
The picture of the beautiful Guzzi is worth the effort alone.
But here’s the thing..
The undeniably attractive lady is in the shot because she IS attractive and the unspoken implication is that she adds to the overall beauty of the shot..(which she demonstrably does)
But..
If she was a female clone of Pete Roper or Beetle, even though she would be the peak of knowlege and acumen that is available to the great unwashed like us, I doubt she would have been included.
Yes she is lovely to look at, but who (including me), wondered what her opinions, emotions and desires are.
It’s a bit of a commentary on us as a demographic....

Seriously I think part of the issue that most women post less is because of what they are subjected to by online males in general. I’m NOT referring to members here. However, if females post in male dominated message boards or Facebook groups, they experience certain behaviors and prejudices that as males we are rarely, if ever subjected to. Especially by “thirsty” online basement dwellers. There are quite a few ladies MC here in ATL, even a Hayabusa female riders group. Those ladies got some skills! But how many male riders relegate women to “lightweight” bikes? Even tho in all honesty their physical prowess is equal to if not higher than a few “geezers” here and elsewhere? I get “hit on” initially on Facebook bc my screen name is Robin, a family nickname, and I have a pic of my wife and I. People on Facebook groups assume Robin=girl so they start being really chatty. When I mention I’m the large ugly white dude, not the cute chick, the chattiness stops quick fast and in a hurry. I also like video games. I’m not even going to go into the chauvinism there. It’s pathetic. Anyways, I think the ladies being quiet and riding their ride is due in large part to male behavior. That’s just my opinion and I’m firm in said opinion.

That’s what I suspected. But I further suspect that if any female posted here and was subject to intimidatory or predatory behaviour, the mods would kill it instantly.
I still think that the perceived possibility of this stuff occurring, is enough to make the vast majority of women think.
“Bugger it all, it’s not worth it...”
Guzzi Gal suggests that she has not encountered any such nonsense which is a welcome piece of news. Anyway, I just thought I’d drag it out onto the bench under the light..

I would think that no one is underrepresented here.  Any one who feels like posting can.

Shame on all y'all for engaging in stereotyping and group thinking.  Oh crap, I just did the same.....

But SRE, that is entirely the point..
Anyone who feels like posting can, so that begs the question.
Why are there so few posts ? I cannot see the logic in the thinking that no particular demographic is under represented, when the clear evidence says the contrary.
It’s really simple, how many girls, how many guys ? The very fact that there are so few posts acknowledging the fact, is rather damning.
But anyway, it’s not a question that has to have an answer. Just a bit of consideration.

Huzo, I think the entire concept of who post here and why can be simplified where even folks like you and I can understand. The members who post, for, the most part, follow the forum daily and for the most part consider this forum a part of our daily entertainment or at least if not daily weekly regiment. Therefore these folks are the ones who post. Ladies for the most part don’t see forums on motorcycles as an essential part of their day as they spend most of their time taking care of their families which is another full time job for women who already work full time jobs.
Did I do good GG😉

I’m sure that’s true in a hell of a lot of cases Nc.
Also a lot of exchanges here (not all), are no more than thinly disguised peeing contests. These are not classically the entertainment pastime of choice for women.
You must keep in mind that our women in the US are kind of difference from y’all’s 😂😂
However I agree with you that too many simply search for a pissing contest for sure.
By the way, what time is it where you’re at?

It's like that here on WG.   A dude posts on the 'Introductions' thread, and then posts something about his bike, and nobody says nothin'.

A girl biker posts, maybe posts a picture of her with her bike (and we're assuming she's not a 6'4" Nigerian posting as Svenka, a former member of the Swedish Bikini Team), and the guys on the list here are tumbling all over themselves trying to open doors for her, and light her cigarette, and make welcoming comments.

I've probably done it myself, in the name of "courtesy" and "good manners", but it's funny when I watch other guys do it.   They don't think it's funny when I comment on it, though ...

You did, Ncdan.  Visiting here was a daily thing for me until I had to get back to being paid to work instead of working as a stay-at-home-moto-riding-mom.

Initially, this may be true, although less so here than some other forums, it fades as the nouvelle-fem becomes familiar.  On the Modern Vespa forum, there are quite a few regular women posters but the venue itself is a lot less active than WG.  I greatly enjoy the company, knowledge, support humor, cooking and yes, even the pissing contests that can be found here.  WG almost always has something interesting to dig into whenever you care to drop in.

Excellent observation.  I suspect that is part of our male semi-human nature.  Same with women who love their kids a lot more than the guy who impregnated her.

Seems more satisfying to help out a women, even something as simple as holding a door.

With guys, the default is often good natured ribbing or outright pecker measuring.

XY is more resilient than XX!

The answer to that question is, I believe, "We don't need to do anything."
I agree with you though, that if any woman participating here sees some sort of "barrier" to participation that I (by definition, being a male) can't see, I'd like to hear what that is.   I suspect, though, they haven't got time to waste on it!

Your response has obviously been trimmed for brevity here and your observations are astute.
But you touch obliquely on my point, there is no “no girls allowed” sign, if there was, the question would be moot.
Ladies for the most part are not here because they don’t want to be, you don’t have to be Pythagoras to figure that out.
Therin lay the crux of the question..
Why do they not want to be ?
If they are just too busy with home duties etc, then the answer is get off our collective arses and help out a bit.
Those who couldn’t care less why they shy away in droves, have just answered the question.
It’s never been that they are (mostly) not here, it’s WHY is it such an unattractive option ?
I don’t care if YOU don’t care and YOU don’t care if I don’t, but I thought a little introspective examination could not be a bad thing.
I do like your closing premise though

Let me think a minute, it's only been 4 years since my last response ....

There are other areas of life, hobby, and sport where women are at NO physical or competitive disadvantage to men, but they are very much underrepresented in their participation.

Competitive billiards/snooker/pool is one example.   Women have the patience, the "eye", and the coordination to excel heads-up with men, but they don't (in general) participate.   Is it because pool has the "cachet" of smokey bars, liquor, cigars, fighting, betting, etc?   You'd think that that would be far in the past, but ...

Competitive shooting ... well, enuf said, but the same thing exactly.  Is it because the history and derivation of such is from traditionally manly exploits like hunting and war?   Again, no reason for that to extend into today, you just buy the right equipment, get the right trainer, and go to work, but very few women do it.

Suppose we were in a bass fishing club.   How many women (not as partners with their man, but themselves) would be members of a club with 100 members?  Two?  Four?   Not more than six.   Why not?   It's not a rugby match, where even large men get beat up and women would get literally killed, it's not tennis, where a men's city tennis champion can beat a women's Wimbledon winner, it's not baseball or track where there's a massive performance difference.   Any woman could get a bass boat, the right tackle, a trailer, and be out there hooking lunkers with any man around.   And bragging about it on any of a hundred fishing forums on-line.  Why don't they?

Motorcycling, or Guzzi-ing, is the same way.   Women, as independent riders, are way under-represented, always have been, so of course they're going to be under-represented on this or any other bike discussion forum.

So for any of those things, there's no way you're going to "convince" or "encourage" women to suddenly start playing pool, bass-fishing, elk-hunting, Guzzi-riding, or anything else like that in numbers approaching 50% or even 20% or even 10% of the participating demographic.

And why would anyone try?   Is "equality of outcome" that much more important than "equality of opportunity"?   It'll never work ... and "helping around the house" so that they'll have more time to get away and practice their 3-cushion shots or figure out how to get a grease gun onto the spine-frame drive shaft grease nipples ... well that does sound silly now that I've said it ....

Just have to blame sexual dimorphism.

Jeez, that 4 years between responses went fast..
Back in a previous life, I uncharacteristicall y became involved on a fairly fruity debate on the topic of women glider pilots.
There was going to be an award for “Top Woman Glider Pilot” handed out at the National comps..
I said that to do so would have been seen as condescending at best and insulting at worst. To create a specific category based on what the Pilot is sitting on, is disingenuous and detracts from the quality of achievement. It implies that the award would not have gone to her had she not been under some “disadvantage” due to her gender.
I suggested that the award could be re badged as the award for...
“Best effort by a male who competed against a gender that has superior powers of endurance, concentration, multi tasking, situational awareness and evenness of demeanour”
The ensuing pushing match was more entertaining than the competition. True nirvana of sexual equality will be reached when the average respondent would not be immediately away are what the M/F ratio is..
No one here has yet said that they hadn’t noticed, so they knew the situation existed.

Sounds like to me that we like to "create" issues where there really aren't any issues.

Here on WG, there's no one complaining, and ESPECIALLY no women complaining, that "there aren't enough women on WG" ... it's not a real problem, just a sort of thing to talk about.

And with the glider pilots, it wasn't a problem until someone decided that there had to be "Awards".   We need to ask ourselves "Why did there need to be an award?"   We all like doing it - at our Guzzi rallies we give out Awards to Long Distance Male Rider, Long Distance Female Rider, Oldest Rider, Youngest Rider, and we need to ask ourselves - Why do we feel that we have to do that?

Why this insidious differentiation depending on XX or XY chromosomes, or chronological age, or any other characteristic that we have no control over, any more than we are responsible for the shape of our grandfathers' legs?

And the second we do it, everyone's concerned about "fairness" and "equality" and "balance" and making sure that everyone's happy and no one feels left out .... ?

We're like the guy who sets a building afire, then runs to the fire station, puts on his turnout gear, and hops on the pumper truck ....

Maybe it's just something to talk about.   We're doing a FANTASTIC job of that!   Four years ... if it were solvable, we'd have it by now ... !

An imaginary problem easily solved by the existing male WG posters simply changing their gender via surgery.

Who wants to be a real leader in this community.......

C'mon now, most of you are old enough that you're not using the wedding tackle anymore anyway..... and think how much better you will be treated online once you take the plunge.
