Title: VW engine in a guzzi?
Post by: Scott84 on November 17, 2016, 04:16:26 PM
I came across this early 4 cylinder VW engine with the adapters to be swapped into a guzzi. I was curious if any one has seen this before? Seems like an interesting concept to me but the 36hp doesn't seem to be a gain.

One would have to ask why?

Interesting though.

Put it into an Amazon. Saw a couple of those in Brazil but never had a chance to try riding one. Looked like it would be a real bear to handle.

There was a /2 VW conversion that attended several BMW rallies in the 1970's and 80's . I asked the owner/builder the same question . He said "Well , I had the frame , and I had the engine"

Funny, I met a fellow with a BMW who had joined 2 engines to make a flat 4.

Mounting a Moto Guzzi engine to a Citroen gear box is often done.

There is/was a Guzzi rider in Reading Mass that owned is own machine shop and he converted his Eldo to run a Subaru engine adapted to the Guzzi  Trans in the loop frame . He fabbed   a radiator and mounted it  inside a closed type English sidecar so his wife could have heat in the winter while riding. This loop also had Earle forks that he made. I rode this Eldo with sidecar and it was great fun and at the time didn't have any problem staying with Kawi 900's light to light .
I wonder if Honda copied the theory to bring the first goldwings to market. Similar package.

As a side note there was a dealer in Norwalk Connecticut that also mounted a VW engine into BMW s in the 70's .  there are still a few of those on the road . The dealers name was Hamn's and he was a Guzzi dealer - is out of business now and was in the Laconia NH area enjoying retirement

There was a diesel Guzzi at John Day c/w dustbin fairing

It was obviously a difficult task to cram all the ancillary equipment into the Guzzi frame and make it look pretty but
with the dustbin fairing it could have been a V8
I love it when someone does something out of the box.

Sometimes that can have surprisingly good results too though
