Not worrying about your health is even more important.

The knowledge of using cold water has mostly been lost in the west. Too bad. It is one of the best kept secrets for feeling totally alive and radiant. It is only in developed countries where we have the luxury of hot water that people have forgotten how to take cold baths.

Whole body Cryotherapy.

$90 for a few minutes.

Whole body cryotherapy (WBC) is an alternative to cold water immersion or ice packs.[2] This treatment involves exposing individuals to extremely cold dry air (below -100 °C) for two to four minutes. To achieve the subzero temperatures required for WBC, two methods are typically used: liquid nitrogen and refrigerated cold air. During these exposures, individuals wear minimal clothing, which usually consists of shorts for males and shorts and a crop top for females. Gloves, a woollen headband covering the ears, and a nose and mouth mask, in addition to dry shoes and socks, are commonly worn to reduce the risk of cold-related injury. The first WBC chamber was built in Japan in the late 1970s, but WBC was not introduced to Europe until the 1980s, and has only been used in the USA and Australia in the past decade.[2]

Whole body cryotherapy was initially intended for use in a clinical setting to treat patients with conditions such as multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis, and although WBC is provided in over 50 European hospitals and medical clinics, it has now been implemented in many spas, and athletic training facilities as well;[7][8] Elite athletes have recently reported using the treatment to alleviate delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) after exercise.[9][10][11][12] Recently, recreational athletes have started to emulate elite athletes in using these treatments after exercise. Reductions in muscle[13] and skin[13][14] tissue temperature after WBC exposure may stimulate cutaneous receptors and excite the sympathetic adrenergic fibres, causing constriction of local arterioles and venules.[13][15] Consequently, WBC may be effective in relieving soreness, or muscle pain, through reduced muscle metabolism, skin microcirculation, receptor sensitivity and nerve conduction velocity.[2] Interestingly, a paradoxical increase in rectal temperature, followed by a slight decline, has been reported following exposure to the treatment.[13] There is also a body of evidence to suggest that WBC stimulates the autonomic nervous system (ANS), with a predominance of parasympathetic tone activation, after exposure.[16]

"Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.

That, more or less, is the short answer to the supposedly incredibly complicated and confusing question of what we humans should eat in order to be maximally healthy." - Michael Pollan

By food, Pollan means food that your great-grandmother would recognize as food.

Walk 10,000 steps a day and do some exercises for your large muscles.

Drink 2 or fewer alcoholic drinks a day.  Avoid hard drugs.  Drink as much black coffee as you want.

Avoid the rat race.

Focus on family and other important relationships.

Figure out how to be kind to yourself and others.

It's possible that it's a "relative" thing.

Dousing yourself in cold water every day just makes you THINK your life is never going to end.   Oh God when is this going to be over?    When can I be comfortable again?

This theory could be tested by shoving a hot radish up your jacksey every morning when you get up, and see if it has the same effect .... ?

I go to the Elkton YMCA in neighboring Elkton MerryLand because it only costs like thirty bucks a month, whereas Ys in DullAware charge more than twice that for way less facilities. Thirty bucks a month is about one buck a day away from being almost zero cost. Plus, they have about everything there. If you can't find a way to get fit at this Y then pass me the Cheetos and skooch over on the couch. They've got basketball leagues, football leagues, two Olympic pools (one indoors, one outdoors), and a kiddie wading pool with slides and dousers, saunas, hot tub, a couple handball courts (often usurped by these soft handed girlies to play what they like to call racquetball), day care for your tots, bouncy room for your children, party room for birthdays, dance class for pretty little princesses in pink tutus, spin class, volleyball, weights, a whole array of hamster machinery under glass, those kinda classes advertised on TV named bogus invented names accompanied by window rattling BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM ....

You want it, they got it. You don't want it, you're nutz. Cause here's the way it goes: use it or lose it.

Stay healthy my friends.

Cigarettes, whiskey and women.  That way, if you become ill, you have a vice to give up in order to get better.  If you have no vices, you have nothing to give up, and you'll probably die quickly.

I try to follow the example of my grandparents, who immigrated from Italy after WWI and were healthy and vibrant into their 90's.  First of all, they ate the classic "mediteranian diet": low on meat, high on vegetables and fruits (most of which they grew themselves), lots of olive oil, moderate alcohol every day, and maybe too many carbs but one can always cut back on that part.

Secondly, they were active.  They did manual labor, sometimes heavy, and had no car so walked everywhere.

Thirdly, they never stayed up late.  In bed by 10 every night.

Fourthly, they were very social and part of the fabric of their community.  There was lots of visiting and conversation.

Do I live this way?  No, but I try and succeed to a degree.

The healing power of water.

Hydrotherapy techniques use water and temperature to revitalize tissues and restore health.  Heat soothes tissues and promotes blood flow to the area, cold brings blood flow away from the area and relieves congestion and inflammation.  When hot and cold are used alternatingly, blood is pumped back and forth, bringing in oxygen and nutrients and shuttling out carbon dioxide and other metabolic waste products.  This gentle therapy is deceivingly powerful, tonifying the cardiovascular system while restoring blood flow to tissues in need of healing.

Hydrotherapy has been used for centuries to combat disease and restore health.  The system-wide tonifying effects it produces makes it a useful therapy for both acute illness and chronic diseases.  Here are some of the many conditions hydrotherapy is used for at the SCNM Medical Center:

•Autoimmune disease
•Allergies
•Headaches and migraines
•Acute respiratory infection and bronchitis
•Excessive lung or sinus mucous
•Constipation or diarrhea
•Abdominal pain
•Stress
•Toxicity
•Chronic fatigue
•Fibromyalgia
•Circulatory disorders
•Insomnia
•Depression, anxiety, and other mood disorders
•Chronic pain
•Acute injuries
•Swelling and inflammation
•Muscle spasms

A very brisk walk each morning for 30 minutes before breakfast. Especially if you live in a hilly area. Run some of it if you feel like it. Park in the back of the lot instead right out front when you go shopping. Take stairs not lifts. All free.

A team of Australian high school students recreated the drug Daraprim for just $2 a pill in order to prove how cheap it is to make.

Last fall, U.S. biotech executive Martin Shkreli sparked outrage when he boosted the price of the drug by more than 4,000 percent, to $750 a pill. The drug is used to treat toxoplasmosis, which can be a life-threatening for pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems, such as those with HIV or AIDS, the Washington Post reported.

In Australia, 50 tablets of the drug can be bought for $13.

The 11th grade students spent about $15 on the ingredients required to produce 3.7 grams of Daraprim, about $100,000 worth of the drug in the U.S. market, according to Alice Williamson, a postdoctoral teaching fellow at the University of Sydney. She teamed up with the high school students and their science teachers.

There are no plans to sell the drug. Williams said the objective of the project was to send a message to drug companies -- particularly those in the U.S. -- that high drug prices are not always justified, the Post reported

I just took a glance at some of the rules and found it interesting that they will reject you if you like to crop ears or dock tails, but they require that you get surgery performed to sterilize the animal.

We got one dog at the local pound without any difficulty, intrusive inspections, etc..  We got another one when it was abandoned at a campground, and it swam across the lake to us when it saw us at the shore.  We did the spay/neuter thing for both, by the way, because we're not into breeding dogs.

Let them develop a pill that will treat some disease for 2-15 dollars. It will be well over the cost of ingredients. Clinical trials, FDA approval cost a lot of $$$$$$$$. Not saying they should have a 100000% mark up but if they are not allowed to recover their discovery cost why would any company spend time and money developing new drugs?

Not saying they should have a 100000% mark up but if they are not allowed to recover their discovery cost why would any company spend time and money developing new drugs?

bc that's what is prescribed by conventional medicine, drugs (actually chemicals).

If/when you or a family member gets gravely ill, I hope you'll have enough sense to rely on "conventional medicine" rather than just taking a cold shower.

How do you define gravely ill?

Instead of just a cold shower, try a ice bath instead!

Yet you are totally against the use of alcohol, which is a natural chemical within the human body called ethanol. "Every living human body continuously produces ethanol (beverage alcohol) 24/7. It's called endogenous ethanol production. Human life does not exist without the presence of alcohol".

True , microbes in the gut do produce ethanol , catch is , the quantities amount to about 1 ounce of beer . Let's please at least attempt to stick to facts here .

As for prescription  drugs , some are very helpful , some are pretty damned destructive .

Nay, lad, I am 100% in favor of endogenous ethanol production by my body, for use in the chemical processes that are part of me, and I recognize that human life wouldn't be possible without it.

Have I ever said anything different?    It would be kind of silly if I did.

Now what about you being against drugs that contain "Chemicals"?

Myth: People who abstain from alcohol are "alcohol-free" and can’t be arrested for DUI.

Learn what they are and why they'Â’re very important.

Fact: The human body produces its own supply of alcohol naturally on a continuous basis, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It’s called endogenous ethanol production. Therefore, we always have alcohol in our bodies and in some cases people produce enough to become legally intoxicated and arrested for DUI. 3

We used to have an addicted supervisor in our business that was constantly trying to defend his workers who would "pop" on random drug and alcohol tests, using the "The Body Produces Enough Alcohol To Get You Drunk" ploy, along with the "If You Eat Enough Poppy Seed Bagels You Will Fail the Narcotics Test" wheeze.

It never worked because it was always bullshyte.   I think I smell some of it now ...

We tried that when looking for our last dog.

But the rules were so restrictive that we couldn't commit to them, or to the regular monitoring that we would receive.

Lannis

That surprises me. The only thing required to take our 'lil rescue beagle home was about $140. No restrictions that I recall, I guess I filled out some paperwork, but certainly no monitoring since.

Why in the WORLD would you be reading all this when you've got a dog to walk?

We wanted a "rescue" Border Collie.   I've always owned Border Collies and I understand their need for exercise, their need for a job to do to occupy their minds and bodies, and their need to be a part of whatever you are doing.

Many people don't understand this, and they try buying a puppy when They Are So CUTE! and then neglect the needs of the dog, who will then invent jobs for themselves to do which generally involve chasing dangerous or unwilling things, geological explorations via huge holes in the earth, or taking things apart to see how they work (UPS packages, truck taillight wiring, furniture, etc.)

Thus the BC ends up in a shelter.   I understand that the shelter guys want the best for the dog, a dog that has already been abused once and they don't want it to happen again.   But we're in sort of a unique situation here, compared to the requirements of the shelter.

Our house is a mile from the nearest road, and is one of two houses on 1200 acres either owned by us or the timber companies.   It's Border Collie heaven, with creeks, fields, woods, meadows ...

But the Rescue Rules say that the dog must be kept penned up, or on a leash, or under your direct control at all times, as if we were living on Central Park in NYC.   You have to keep the dog in a pen or in the house unless you are "exercising" him., and the Shelter rules say that they can come out (if they desire) at any time and see that you are following these rules.

So we said Sod that for a game of soldiers, and bought a nice male 10-week-old pup from a local breeder, last of the litter.   He goes in and out of the house as he desires.  He wears a "MarcoPolo" transponder on his collar; we have the DF module at the house, and if he gets 1/2 mile from the house (which is all ours or Weyerhauser land), it alarms, points to his location, and we call him back.   He knows exactly where his boundaries are now, so if he's out herding deer or something, he knows when to turn back to home.

It keeps him safe, keeps him feeling secure since he knows he's being watched, and when we're out walking with him, he'll turn and ask if it's OK to go on when he gets near the limit.  He stays in an outdoor pen with a luxury 2-room BC house when we're gone for the day, and at a local boarding place when we're on vacation.

It's a wonderful situation for a dog, but the "System" doesn't understand ...

When we adopted our dog from the local shelter it basically said the same thing about not allowing it to run free. But we too live very rurally and out dog goes out pretty much as he pleases un supervised much of the time, no problem. Don't think the shelter has enough staffing or money to run someone out here to check up on us.

You just don't have the mental strength to take a simple cold water shower.

They are nothing like submerging yourself in <50 F. Now that's the real treat.

According to Hippocrates, water therapy ‘allays lassitude’ (physical or mental weakness).

You kidding?  At 58 years old, I've had many cold showers in my life.  Also many swims and water skis in the 65 degree waters around Ocean City, NJ.  I've actually water skied in the brackish water of the Wye river off the Chesapeake bay when there was ice floating around, but I did have a dry suit on that day.

Come to think of it, I've water skied quite a few times in water that was 40 to 50 degrees F, wearing a wet suit, and as I'm sure you know, when the suit fills up, the water takes a while to warm up!

The thing with medicine is it would absent standards attract plenty of scallywags with their crackpot remedies b/c there is no shortage of people that will make a leap of faith & buy in to a story-line that provides easy answers.

Yet there MIGHT be some benefit to these cold plunges / showers & the research is just sparse. I'll remain open but unconvinced especially when a Tony Robbins type motivational speaker is pointed to as evidence.

A quick search looking for something more credible turned up a 4 YO commentary by an MD...

- Boosting the immune system: a study from England found that taking daily cold showers increased the numbers of disease-fighting white blood cells (compared to people who took hot showers). The investigators at Britains Thrombosis Research Institute suggested that as the body tries to warm itself during and after a cold shower, metabolic rate speeds up and activates the immune system, which leads to the release of more white blood cells. And, according to a German study, an occasional winter swim in cold water causes oxidative stress, but, done regularly, such swimming leads to an adaptive antioxidant response; in other words, the body is better able to combat oxidative stress in general once its accustomed to cold-water swims.

- Preventing injury: Soaking in a cold bath (also known as an "ice bath" or "cold therapy") is said to help reduce swelling and tissue breakdown in runners after distance runs. However, the few studies actually completed and published have been inconclusive or contradictory, so until we get more definitive findings, these claimed benefits cant be confirmed.

- Enhancing male fertility: Here, the main argument for cold showers assisting conception is that theyre not hot showers. Higher scrotal temperatures depress sperm production, so much so that long-standing belief holds that hot baths might be an effective method of male contraception. According to a study published in 1992, the "wet heat" method of contraception has been known since the 4th century B.C. and involves placing the testes in hot water (116 degrees Fahrenheit) for 45 minutes every night for three weeks. This is supposed to provide protection for six months, but it isnt a very practical method. And theres no proof that taking cold showers will have the opposite effect.

Cold water may do all that and more, but the science behind the claims for health benefits is very thin. Showering or swimming in cold water is a matter of personal preference there is no compelling health reason to switch to cold showers or dive into frigid water. In fact, I advise against it for anyone who has high blood pressure. Low temperatures (including cold weather) constrict blood vessels. As a result, blood pressure rises because more pressure is needed to force blood though narrowed blood vessels.

As for dog booties, would you like to walk barefoot on asphalt when it's 105F ambient?   Heck, my feet are so tender I can't walk on asphalt comfortably even when it's 70F.   We have a Chihuahua dog whose small paws can't handle hot asphalt either, so my wife got it booties.  We don't have sidewalks.

Some dogs (like Border Collies, I can't speak for many others) have an "undercoat" of fur that is impervious to water.    Their outer, rougher coat sheds much of the water, and their lanolin-coated undercoat keeps their skin dry no matter how long they are in the water.

It might explain why the thing that Jack the Border Collie hates more than anything in the world is Taking a Bath.   When he gets a bath, we use shampoo on him that gets the oil out of his undercoat and wets him to the skin, and he KNOWS there's something weird and uncomfortable about that.    When he gets out of a long swim in the river, or a full day in the rain, he still looks like his normal self, because his undercoat is still fluffy.   When he gets a bath, he looks like he's lost 30 pounds and is an anorexic greyhound or something ...

Regardless, it's a lot of fun watching a dog that loves the water or the snow having fun in that environment.   There are YouTube videos of dogs playing in deep snow that are hilarious to watch ....

A few years ago, my family stood on the lake shore and watched our Lab chase a family of ducks across the lake.  He got about half a mile or so out, and realized he didn't want to continue.  He turned around and headed back toward us, and the mother duck also turned around and chased him.  She followed him at least halfway back, and occasionally our dog would turn around to go after her for a few feet.  Eventually the duck got tired of the activity and swam back toward her ducklings, and our dog made it back to shore.  We just marveled with interspersed laughter at the whole scene as it unfolded.

That reminds me, we had a house in Vancouver, Wa. that had filbert trees in the back yard.  We had cats and wild squirrels that would tease our cats by hanging on a tree branch by their front legs, and wiggle their tails and chirp 'till a cat would try to get to them.  Then the squirrel would jump to another branch and start all over.   After awhile the cats got to ignoring the squirrels because there's no way they could ever catch them.
