I may have asked this before, but time has a way of making everything new again.
What is the fastest production Guzzi? Let's make two categories, Top Speed, and 0 to 80!
Look, I know it's irrelevant, as we are talking about bikes that can't really be considered fast, but it's still fun in our little universe to play, right?

1997 Daytona RS will have the top speed honors. It was a 150 mph bike.
I would guess Griso 8v SE takes the 0-80 sprint, thanks to its gearing.

Your question is interesting! I'm thinking for production bikes, maybe the 8v 1200 Sport, which we didn't get in the USA. Going back a few years, BMW's faster bikes were generally the RS series machines, with their small fairings and lower bars. So possibly, the 8 valve 1200 Sport may have had (a) the horsepower, and (b) the aerodynamics to be one of Guzzi's quicker production bikes. I know from riding my 2v 1200 Sport out West that the chassis was up to it. However, only guessing.

The 8 valve Griso was the quickest , 0-60 in 3.1 seconds , 11.1 1/4 mile times . Well , with a 110 LB test rider , and I am pretty sure Rocker is correct about the 150 MPH figure .

The RS motor was in a higher state of tune than the Daytona 1000 so 150 is probably about right.

Wouldn't this depend on if we count the MGS-01 as a "production" Guzzi? It was produced and sold in very small numbers, so shouldn't it count?

It wasn't sold as a road bike, but yeah, MGS-01 would be up there

It was a "production" race bike, 100 or so built for club racers.
If that qualifies it, then MGS-01 is top dog.
Normally, when I hear "production bike", I think "street bike". But you're right, he left that a little open.

2002 V11 LeMans - 139 mph

Too bad a successor to that line does not live on...

The Centauro was clocked at 137mph by cycle world in a shootout between it, a buell, a M900 monster and the T509 speed triple.
Keep in mind that the tuning on these (and the RS) was crap off of the show room floor.

I hit 143 mph on my highly modified Centauro. Once. Bright sunny day, nice tail wind, no luggage. That was gps indicated too.
I recently hit 180 on my mgx.

My BMW R-26 once registered 120 KPH going down hill.
Laid down on the tank, behind the steering damper, elbows tucked in, knees pinching the tank, WFO!
Wow! That works out to, uh, --- 74 MPH. Uh, never mind.

Since a slight thread drift.
'72 Eldo, 2 up, straight desert road many moons ago. 110 +/- (spedo was twitching) mph. Up to 85mph went pretty quick, the last 30 took a long time especially once it hit 100. Thought I was going to run out of straight road.

My LM3 did 150 indicated. It is just opened up in & out and an 8/35 rear. Tallest gearing at the time until the 8/33 came out. Still not bad for a sort of stock bike.
I would think the MGS 01 would be fastest, it was sold to the public.

Anecdotally about 250kph on the main straight of the island on a ride day with a mug rider that is not very familiar with the track. A good run through turn 11/12 would have you hooking sixth about a 1/3 of the way down the main straight and piling on a solid bit of acceleration. Although if you got baulked (ride day you don't get to pick and choose) you'd be almost at the finish line. Can't remember what was the max rpm it got too in top I guessing a good 6 or 7000 rpm.

From my experience in land speed racing on paved tracks, 100 HP at the rear wheel will push a stock naked frame bike close to 150 with the rider properly positioned..55 HP at the rear wheel on a smaller lowered naked frame bike will crowd 130 MPH... My 84 Cali cafe bike with a stock good running engine hit 117 mph in the standing start one mile... It may have gone 120 with a longer run...180 HP fairing equipped super bikes run 180 plus on the mile and a half standing start.. About 75 naked frame bikes have been timed at 200 plus MPH in the last 60 years, requires 220-250 HP..
For some strange reason speeds officially timed on a track are slower than claims made on the street............. :wink:

Less weight and gearing? Not sure, but I think the Griso motor keeps up power higher in the RPM range. I would think the aerodynamics on the Norge would be better however. I have checked my Norge against a GPS at 100 and it was running 96. I have ran it up to 140 indicated with bags and trunk so I would think i hit at least 130.

That means a Norge is no faster than my VX800, which has been top speed tested in a road test w/o body work @ 127 mph. Never saw anywhere what it's hp rating is, but it pulls strongly from just off idle all the way to top speed. Raced a 1200 Buell once and we were dead even on acceleration but we didn't go to top speed.
1 time I got in a race with a brand new Camaro that Road & track said would do 140 mph and my LM IV speedo was reading 139 mph, so I drafted him to match his speed. Instead of a 130/80 rear tire I had a 130/90 rear tire then that was good for 200 rpm more. :boozing: I switched to a 130/90 on the LM so I could get a longer lasting tire.
On my VX I switched from a 150/70 rear tire to a 130/90 to get taller gearing, equivalent to another gear(500 rpm). Doing this I had to get shorter shocks as then the seat was too tall for me. But otherwise everything else worked just fine, except the sidestand was a little short. :boozing:

My CX100 is the same way..........hit 5-5.5k and the cam kicks in and it feels like a turbo, but that bike I think is only good for 125 mph top. My 750 Breva will do 105 mph top.

you all better watch for family sedans...According to Chevrolet manufacturers info a mundane Malibu is governed at 130 MPH... :wink:

I looked on line for a road test that included top speed for the 1200 Sport with the 8 valve engine and couldn't find one. I was only speculating early in this thread about that particular bike being one of the faster production Guzzis, and judging from how my 95hp 2 valve model ran, it seemed possible that the 1200 Sport with 8 valve engine might make it to 140-145 mph. I would have thought the Sport would have been more slippery through the air than the Griso.

That top speed isn't important to me...
I like its acceleration much, much more... :thumb:
Starting to lift its front wheel from about 40 Kmh till aprox 150 Kmh, not to much, not to high, but long... :bow:

The fastest speed I ever see from the dash of my Griso is170kmh+, that's the maximum speed my neck muscle can hold my head in the wind.

I should emphasis that 170km/h was achieved in my dream, exceeding 80km/h above national speed limit will end up in jail and a real hefty fine :copcar:
