Today, I picked up the owner's manual for my 2016 Stelvio. On page 224, it says the engine oil should be 10W60. Is there really such a thing available in the USA?
What do most here use for engine oil in their newer Stelvios?
And what is the engine oil refill capacity?

Yes, absolutely you wan to use only 10W60. You can find it easily on line. Others will chime in, but there is a very real reason for only using 10w60 in this motor.

+1 Don't consider doing something other than what is recommended. Your dealer should be able to assist you.

Exactly, Motul is the good stuff, real Full Synthetic to Euro standards. I buy two (2) so the lay-up oil change is on hand when needed, like now in Maine...
Best,

+1, yep...10W60 is there for a reason. You will find that lots of high performance European cars use 10W60 (Porsche, BMW M Series) and you can buy the oil at most BMW car dealerships. Between over cooling (leading to mayo) and the high torque produced with our 1200cc lump the oil suffers through some pretty extreme conditions. In the summer air cooling can't keep temps down and in winter it is hard to get the oil hot enough. Another way to think about it is you have a $15K machine so spending an extra $10 for an oil change should not be a big deal.

Thanks. I just ordered six quarts of the stuff. Only two quarts available, so I guess I have to wait longer for the other four. I never even heard of 10W60 before.
I see the oil change capacity is 3.7 quarts with the filter change. So I have an extra couple of quarts.
What is the oil filter type? Is the 2016 and 2015 use the same oil filter? I noticed the K&N website had a listing for the 2015 Stelvio, but said for the 2016 "no products available." I assume they just are not up to date, but I better be sure, so what type / number of oil filter is it?
I will probably pick up my new bike in a week or so.

Hi, Don.
Congrats on the Stelvio!
You'll need both the filter and the correct wrench. You can find them here:

Edit:. They also sell the Motul 4L for less than Motorcycle Superstore. Shipping not included, though.
Cheers,

A variety of sources are available for 10w60. Motul is very nice, several other brands are also true full synthetic (sometimes labeled double ester synthetic, sometimes something else). Agip, Elf/Total, Motul and Amsoil (you have to ask about it) all have their proponents, and all will be good - choose your favorite. I used Elf/Total until the supplier went away and the new one raised the price and reduced availability. I now use Liqui-Moly, which is sold in 5 liter jugs through NAPA stores and affiliates. It's not listed as a motorcycle oil but is certified as such (just not for wet clutches - not an issue on our bikes). If they have trouble finding it, tell them you have a BMW M-Series or a Porsche.
Modern CARCs can use a number of filters, and there are threads here discussing them. Again, you may find various preferences - I would pay more attention to reported faults than to claims that some are wildly better than others. A good, easily found filter that meets spec is the Mobil1 M1-102, which I use. Several others are likely every bit as good.
My choices are driven by easy availability, since I put about 24 to 30 thousand a year on my Norge, and as a result change my oil several times a year.

Thanks for the info. BTW, do you know if the 2016 Stelvio uses the same oil filter as the 2015 and earlier Stelvios? The reason I ask is because of the K & N website that says the 2016 filters are NOT available, but the 2015 filters are.

I kinda figured that it just was the website wasn't yet updated. Do many here use the K&N filter? I do on several of my other bikes.
Thanks for the replies to all those who did.

As an aside, I wouldn't hesitate to use either the OE UFI filter or the HiFlo, which are of very good quality. It's not uncommon for a respected dealer (Moto International, for example) to ship a HiFlo if you just ask for an oil filter. I've been very happy with them.
Sorry, no experience with the K&N, but be aware that clearance around the filter is tight as it is recessed into the sump very deeply, and you really need the special wrench to get it off and on easily. Some filters have a different number of flutes, so require a different wrench. Just be sure what you get fits well, and that you get the matching tool for the filter.

Shaun

I just e-mailed Motto Guzzi USA to see if the "Liqui Moly 2024 Synthoil Race Tech GT1 10W-60 Motor Oil" which is an API "SL" and available on Amazon.com for $41.81/5L jug. They said a 10W60 "API SG" or better was required and that API SL is higher grade than SG, so it was a warranty acceptable oil. Pretty good price too!

With the K&N, if the center top of the filter is in the clear, all I will need is an open end wrench to remove the K&N filters. K&N filters have a large nut welded to the top of their oil filters to make them very easy to remove with no oil filter wrench. I Use K&N on my Triumph Trophy SE, Kawasaki Versys and my Yamaha Venture (is modified to take spin-on filters). See here. You will most likely need the fluted wrench to remove the stock filter. You won't be able to use a band type wrench or a three-finger grip wrench.... there is not enough clearance to get them onto the filter.

I will still buy the old filter wrench for the stock filter, just like I did for my other bikes. But I will probably only use it once and use the K&N filters after, just as I have done with my other bikes.
But then I can use and remove either type of oil filter.

10w60 is becoming prevalent. Several old threads here deal with various sources for it.
NAPA has it in their system and my local NAPA store stock it in Liqui Moly, BMW has it and it's easy to find on internet sites.
AF1 Racing is a stocking Guzzi big dealer and they are very friendly and helpful for many things.

I started getting the Guzzi suggested ENI (AGIP) oil from ebay, but the ebay seller now has it on the web site (gotta buy a case) for about $11-12/L free shipping:
ENI 10W-60- https://www.motocarr.com/products/eni-agip-i-ride-motogp-10w-60-motorcycle-oil-case-12-1l-bottles
I buy my oil filters from MGcycle and a lot of other items from AF1 racing.
You can get the CARC and trans oils a quart at a time from AF1:
http://www.af1racing.com/store/Scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=7324
http://www.af1racing.com/store/Scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=57052
(yes, they are different despite the 80W-90 and 85W-90 weight).
The trans will eat near a liter, the CARC should be able to get two changes for a liter (IIRC)
Don't forget to use GuzziDiag software and make your own Manometer to balance the throttle bodies (method on this group somewhere)

Your dealer should be able to assist you.
"should" being the key word. Odds are the dealer is using 20w50 and just not saying anything.
I get the 10w60 for my V7 Special at the BMW motorcycle dealer...

I usually look on the fluids shelf of the dealer. No 10W-60 on the shelf usually means no 10W-60 out back.

OP, you show your location as sometimes Auburn, CA. I don't know your closest dealer, or who you purchased from, but Elk Grove Power Sports in Elk Grove, CA is an excellent Guzzi dealer and carries Motul 7100 10w60 in stock.

I purchase the Stelvio here in Reno, NV. I have not yet picked up the bike but I have the owner's manual here. The house in Auburn is in Escrow right now and won't be mine until Dec 20. Then I will also pick up the Stelvio when I have a total of 8 garages for my 13 motor vehicles. I own three houses and I do NOT rent out any. I use them all myself.
BTW, at first, I was going to buy a house in Elk Grove, but I later decided to buy in Auburn, which is closer to Reno and still close enough to the Sacramento / Elk Grove area.
The Triumph dealer (where I purchased my 2013 Triumph Trophy SE a few years ago) now also sells Moto Guzzi and keeps MANY in stock at two different Reno locations. One is here (http://www.motorcycle-usa.com/dealer/freedom-cycle-reno/) and the other location is here. (http://greatwesternmarketplace.com/) They also have a shop in Las Vegas.

I've wondered that too. The only way to be 100% sure how something was done is by doing the job yourself. I usually do all my own work for that reason.
However, I doubt if any bike that requires 10W60 would have a problem with 20W50 under any conditions, but I really don't know and I would always use what the owner's manual says to use, when possible.
It seems a lot of bikes say to use only one weird grade. My 1984 Yamaha requires 20W40 only and that is no longer available even at Yamaha shops. So I use 15W40 diesel engine oil in it. It's a wet clutch so it won't like some additives used in engine oils made made for gasoline cars.
I see the Stelvio must be a dry clutch (like my 71 BMW) as the tranny requires 500 CC of 85W90 gear oil.

If you have Amazon Prime then order the Liqui Moly 5L jug for $42 and a Bosch 3330 Gold filter as an add on item for $5. Free ship, it's there in two days and you already have the wrench for it.
Not that I'm lazy or cheap or have red suspenders or anything like that...

I should mention that for a while, K&N filters had a run of bad oil pressure filters due to the relief spring not being spec. It went on for longer than you'd think it should. The problem did get fixed, I'm told, but you will see references to it on various websites.
Just to be clear, I'm not anti K&N - I've used their products in many machines.
