Title: Oxford Heated Grips Using Stelvio Integrated Controller
Post by: smdl on December 13, 2016, 03:53:44 PM
Hi, folks.

I have searched and reviewed multiple threads on this subject of heated grips, but haven't yet found one that answers all my specific questions.  Hoping that I can benefit from the experience of others.

My Stelvio has had the optional heated grips installed, and I find that them to be very weak (as do many others).  So, I have decided to replace the grips with a set from Oxford, and my understanding is that they can be used with the integrated Stelvio controller instead of using the Oxford controller (my preference).  I'm assuming, though, that the connectors are not compatible, and that they would need to be adapted?

I'm hoping that others can confirm that my assumptions above are correct, and that those who are using the Oxford grips with the integrated controller can share their experience with that combination.  How do the grips perform?  I can certainly install the Oxford controller, if needed, but would prefer not to if I don't need to.

Any information would be appreciated.  Looking forward to a little more heat!

Cheers,
Shaun

Your main concern would be that the Oxford grips might draw too much current compared with the MG versions, which may have a detrimental effect on your dashboard (read expensive).  I believe others have done it, I'm just stating my concerns.

Maximum current is when the grips are cold (i.e. on first switch-on).  I measured Guzzi grips to be around 14 ohms cold, meaning a maximum current of around 1 amp each, totalling 2 amps.  If the Oxfords are considerably lower in ohms when measured cold, it could spell trouble.

If decide to got ahead and want to preserve the Stelvio's connectors, mating connectors for them are available from Fry's Electronics, part number 1661407.

Thanks, Dave.  The Oxford specs say that the grips draw less than 4 amps (for the pair), so definitely more than the stock items.  I'm not sure what the stock dash is rated for, unfortunately.  I'll make a point of checking resistance before installing them.

Cheers,

My '15 Stelvio did not come with heated grips.  I installed Oxfords and wired them into existing Stelvio Grip wiring.  Stock switch working Great!   :thumb:

You are good.  Have had mine hooked up for 3 years.  I had the stock ones originally and they suck.  The Oxfords are hotter.  The stock controller is fine.

Update on this:  I'd like to source the correct connectors that Kiwi Dave mentions, but the Fry's part number referenced doesn't seem to be valid.  Does anyone know the manufacturer part number for these connectors?  I assume they are probably Molex or similar.

Thanks,
Shaun

Okay, sincere thanks to Kiwi Dave for the part number of the connector to match the factory Guzzi cables.  However, as I need to make an extension for the Oxford side, does anyone happen to know he correct connector there?  If I need to make an extension, I might as well leave the original connectors in place on both ends.

Cheers,
Shaun
