I have heard that there is an advanced search function to allow searching for an entire state for an item on Craig's list without having to sift through each region....anybody want to give it up?
Thanks? lol

Yes, one city at a time.

I've been Googling search all Craigslist recently in my Guzzi hunt and found these two, though they aren't state specific:

It can do all of Hawaii or individual islands as you choose.
I suppose it can do a whole state or its regions.

I have looked on c.l. in a specific location. Ads show up for the location and then there are additional ads for surrounding locations at the bottom of the page.

Search tempest and adhunter are such programs
Thanks smdl, Nic, and Laker :) that's what I was looking for

Search Tempest hasn't worked for me since they had that big throwdown with Craigslist a couple years ago.
I just tried it, and the results really sucked. Some of the given results had expired or been removed, and not all results were shown, as compared to using Craigslist, itself...
using Craigslist directly works best for me.

I am in Cleveland Ohio and when you click on "include nearby areas" I get 36 other cities that are close to me - from Cincinnati, to Pittsburg and Detroit and a few in Canada.

Search Tempest works best for me if you use the Direct Results feature. It doesn't show one state at a time, but shows a regional area that is quicker than going city by city for each state. I can't vouch for the currentness, but I just checked an I get some results that were just posted a few hours ago.
Actually, I just checked it again ad I think maybe you can do it by state. If you select the state you are interested in in the relevance box it brings it up. YMMV.

SearchTempest is good, but slow. It seems to search on the fly, one city at a time. What's worse, Google has recently started limiting the number of consecutive searches they can make, so they are forever pausing for a number of seconds before going to the next city. Makes it even slower. Adhuntr is fast, and provides almost as effective results, which is why I use it most often. I'm not sure what the difference is in the background, but I suspect that they build a index of ads on an ongoing basis, and apply your search to that. Then, you get links to take you directly to the CL ads from there. Still SearchTempest sometimes finds one or two extra ads, and tends to have fewer dead links, so I still use it sometimes.
Cheers,
Shaun

I do wish Jaxed was still around in it's original format. Made nationwide or area specific searches very easy.
