Title: Looking for rebuild instructions for Dellorto PHBH 28 carburetor?
Post by: Tony/CT on January 23, 2017, 11:03:41 AM
The carbs are off an 81 V50 III. When I rebuilt the carbs on my Ambassador I used Greg Benders directions, step by step. Not much room for error really. The 28's are different, round slide instead of square. Was hoping I could find a procedure for a rebuild. Tony

The principles should be very similar to the procedure used by Greg Bender for the Sq slide.  I've got some pictures in a couple posts with the Monza.  The more recent post with the USA 30mm carbs for the V65 have a different float bowl and atomizer set-up.

Some tips: Replace needle and atomizer.
Check mixture screws for hard bottoming and replace if needed.
The choke jet may be seized in the carb body.  If it breaks off it can be removed with an easy out. (heat may help)
When checking float level, set carb on its opening so float arm points straight up and confirm that both sides of the float are the same.  Remove float and set on level surface to see that floats and float pivot are parallel.
If the plating on the slides is worn through, new slides will help idle consistency and transition off idle.
Check the pictures to see where all the O-rings and washers that fit under the slide and mixture needles.

On mine, the carb set-up was as important as the rebuild.
Stock carb jetting works great with the stock airbox.
Check literature for initial carb settings.  If you can't find them, something like mix screws 1.5 turns out and slides lifted 2 turns up should get you close.
Cut two bamboo skewers roughly 3-4" long and place in mouth of carbs under the edge of the slides before you connect the airbox/air filters.  Rotate the throttle to just barely lift the slides - both skewer tips should drop at the same time. (Marking the skewers at the carb mouth will help confirm they are both inserted the same distance.)
BTW, the stock plastic throttle pull distorts with age and spring tension and makes the skewer drop very inconsistent - no matter how careful I was, off-idle throttle response was rough until plastic throttle was replaced with alloy.

If it stumbles accelerating from a stop check that the timing advance is working correctly and that the advance springs are correct.  (took me forever to find an off idle stumble (a dog pulling from a stop) was bad timing advance springs.)
Hope this helps.

I just picked up a PHBH 30 (NOS, yea!) for a Benelli 350 that I'm working on.

What does the board recommend for Dellorto manuals?  I've seen the online factory manuals, but I've got hankering to spend money on an aftermarket book, if they're any good.
