Maybe someone from the Houston area can add some info. According to the article it'll be used for a parking lot and as an exhibition hall. It's overshadowed by the newer stadium and the community doesn't want it torn down. Must be the same like retiring Man o' War.

I think that's great. It's wasteful not to re-purpose structures.
-
A small majority (but still a majority) of the community actually has no problem with the 'dome being razed. It's the county commissioners who want to keep it. Hell, it's been sitting empty for years, but the good people of Harris County are still paying off the construction bonds.

Sounds good for parking since the building is still sound. Sad that it's not being used for it's original purpose but at least it's being used or will be used. Kind of like the dirigible hanger in Tilamook. The other one burned down.

I went to the Astrodome on Feb 6,7,1970. Watched Mert Lawwill win the short track race on a Harley Sprint, He passed Dick Mann who was on an Ossa on the 19th lap. Bought my Harley ERS sprint after that.

Suckers.. we got bilked by Ziggy Wilf of .5 Billion for the "Peoples Stadium" AKA US Bank Stadium.. at least they put it on the same ground as the Hubert Humphrey Metrodome..and didn't leave the city for Blaine MN..
SuperBowl 2018 .. Vikings a LONG shot to play in it, look for a Packers appearance..

Looks like the 'dome will be around for a while.
From the Houston Chronicle:
After tabling the matter for three years, the Texas Historical Commission in Austin voted Friday morning to designate the Astrodome a State Antiquities Landmark, joining the ranks of the Alamo, the State Capitol, the Cotton Bowl and other notable sites.

Well...they could use for a convention center and HS state championships...... .

They built it. Now they would have to see if they show up.

I need Danial Kalal to chime in but...What was known as the "Kansas Coliseum" an 8-10 thousand seat venue for concerts and sports shut down as such a few years back. It is now used a structural testing center for aircraft and has the room to accommodate full width airliner wings, etc. Some creative thinking to reappropriate the building use.

Air conditioned indoor shooting range? Yeah, yeah, I know.....brainstorm ing here. Rodeo rink????

I keep proposing they sell or give it away to Mexico as a soccer stadium or make it into the World's Largest Boiled Crawfish Joint but nobody seems to be listening.

I watched a bunch of baseball games there...and I was a regular for the flat track/tourist trophy/Supercross races, too. I saw Kenny Roberts race there as a Junior and Bob Hannah when he was the champ. The livestock show, boat show, USFL, the Oilers...I could find my way there in my sleep!

There was some talk up of setting up an indoor water park. There is one in Germany(It looked great). The one in Germany is 3-4 times bigger than the Astrodome. Another version is when Unicorn moves to Texas and we have gambling. Turning into Dome Vegas. What really hurts the Dome's future usage is at least 10-20 venues/stadiums across the Houston area. You can't believe how many incredible High School Stadiums are in the Houston area. It's just sad that it isn't being repurposed.
