I have a cat, my wife has 2 small dogs.  Dogs are higher maintenance than a cat especially if you travel away from home at times.

2 dogs, mutts, brother and sister. The male looks like he is mostly border collie. The female looks like border collie with some australian shepard mixed in.

No cats.

3 "full time" dogs, meaning they live and eat here every day
1 "part time" cat, meaning she comes and goes as she pleases, sometimes for months
1  pregnant donkey
7 hens
several goldfish
six cows, three of which are pregnant
and a multitude of various wildlife, the last of which we discovered was a family of hogs

We have Marley and two cats. One cat is fairly young and dumb as a post and the other is over 22 years old, crotchety and decrepted but just keeps going. They are both okay with the dog but strongly dislike each other.

Well if we're going to list all the animals we feed daily- quail, doves and other wild birds, wild bunny rabbits, coyotes indirectly, gophers, mice, small squirrels.    Since we moved to the desert we have more animals than ever before dependant on us.

We had Chief for 17 years before she went over the bridge. Been 10 years. Still cannot bear the thought of another dog. Maybe after retirement.

We had a dog many years ago.  Nice to have around for the kids when they were younger.  It died at 17 years of age, the kids grew up and are out of the house.  One area my wife and I definitely agree -- don't need/want another one.  Too much maintenance.

Took many years after the passing of our 1st pup before we could let another into our hearts. Then a little over a year ago Holly joined our family.

Tink and Flops taking a simultaneous yawn.

Got Flops (the blond) about 7 years ago when she wondered off the tough streets and into the library I was then managing.  She had no tags, was literally covered in dirt and fleas.  She growled at me at first so I just sat down on the steps and waited.  She then eventually jumped up right beside me on the steps and I knew that very second she owned me.  Dunno how long she had been on the street but after getting her cleaned up and fleas removed - took two baths - she literally almost rested for 3 straight days.

Tink came from a Shitzu rescue organization here in Louisville.  Oddly enough, he had been picked up off the streets by Animal Services in the same area of Louisville where Flops had drifted into the library.

We travel too much to have a dog. Ol Radar, our Maine Coon cat, died at 17. He wasn't as much of a problem as a dog when we were gone, but it was still hard on him.
Here's my granddawg, Belle, a German wirehaired pointer, inspecting our work on the Kid's 1100 Spot.

Newman the cat, Baxter the dog.  We have had as many as five dogs at a given time.  All from shelters or with a history of neglect or abuse.  (Newman was found under a bush in our backyard, a barely weened sick eyed kitten on the verge of starvation.)  Vet was sure he would never be sociable because of his feral background, that didn't work out, most lovable cat on the the planet.  Through the years the Wife and I have had too many of those last trips to the vet when Father Time takes his toll, these will be our last two..........

I had dogs my entire childhood until early adulthood.  It's weird I thought I was a 'dog person' until my last dog died and I didn't get another for a few years...  After time without a dog, I can't imagine ever owning one again. Needy, annoying, smelly, loud nuisance animals IMO

This is NOT a popular opinion in Asheville, everyone seems to have a dog, and many many people take their dogs with them everywhere.

Timely Poll.

DEFINITELY always been a dog person. Now, I'm a 50 yr old batchelor(Div/2 grown kids), so having a dog around keeps me off the couch and allows me to indulge the delusion that someone gives a rats ass what I think.

My Britt, who was my wingman to the nth degree passed suddenly last summer, and with help from his Vet it would seem. It was a wholly miserable process. My ONLY consolation was all the rides I was gonna take before re-committing, something I considered inevitable. Well about 6 weeks passed before another Vet, who was aware of my Britts demise, and felt somewhat responsible by proxy, called and informed me that my new pardner was awaiting his valet. 7 wks old and needed a home. No pedigree, but all Aussie nonetheless. And Blue Merle to boot. I feigned resistance for a hot minute.

Now 8 months (almost) and 43 lbs of piss and vinegar. Pretty sure he can spell better than I can.

Those 2 dogs look like Lahsa Apsos, not Shitzus to me.  Lhasas are bigger.   We had 1 for about 13 years.   Their eyeballs are not aligned.  Instead they look outward from each other.   They're Tibetan breed.

I chose none of the above because we lost our Ellie (on the right) to cancer about 4 years ago and this past October we lost our precious Sophie. She was 18 years old and that finally just caught up to her. We are thankful she had a year in Italy where she made many new friends, she loved it here!

We still have cats (now four after we rescued a kitten about a month ago) and our cat Miles has a real fan club here, not many people have seen a cat as big as he is out walking on a leash. Tourists stop to chat with him and take his picture.

Have taken care of old world Chameleons in the past.  Current reptile is Mulch the Ribbon Snake.  Was mowing the lawn 12 years ago and saw a 3 inch long wormlike thing sliding into the path of the mower.  Shut the mulching mower down too late I thought.  Looked underneath and there was a baby ribbon snake.  Took him in and called him Mulch.  He's now about a foot long, eats shiner minnows and worms if no shiners are available.  Great pet, fascinating to watch him 'go fishing', no problems, no vet bills...

And we have a fish tank with guppies (no, not for Mulch).  We started with 6 and now have about 40 in there.  Use the tank water to water our houseplants each week (good nutrients in there) and fill the tank back up from the rainwater cistern.

I thought that if we liked dogs then birds were not an option, as it happens I like both........... It's not legal to own a crow ????.    I would take no notice of such a stupid law............. PS, If it's flying free nobody can say who owns it.  When I was a kid I had jackdaws ( small English crows ) and magpies, all of them flew free, they came home for food and to spend the night....  I have had trained falcons out for over two years before re training them.

We have four hens and two cats....The cats are outside most of the time, we are in the woods on 10 acres.... But during the winter they do sleep all day by the wood stove...One cat is 21 year old female that was a stray... The 11 year old male in the photo was a feral kitten we took in..He's no lap cat and in the past I thought cats were a bit dumb...This one is scary smart  and master of his domain...

I will saying that I have owned a lot of cats over the years and yes they seem to vary widely in smarts and hunting abilities. Maybe the low performers would have perished early in life if feral. My best hunting cat appeared to only go after rodents and rabbits. Never saw him go after birds even around out feeders. He would kill full sized rabbits and drag them to the deck and be tripping over the body when dragging it.
I had another that would let me hold him up over my head and when doing so he would take out any moths, flies, etc. that were on the upper walls or ceiling.

This dude was boss of our house and the smartest cat I think I ever saw ...

That "American Shorthair" cat gene is strong!

Two Rhodesian Ridgebacks.  Bear (1) and Oni (5).  Yes, there was a treat involved in this pic.

Beautiful dogs, those.   And you didn't have to tell some of us, who own "I-will-KILL-for-a-treat" dogs, that they had been told a treat was coming.   A great training tool.

In order of desirability:

1) Venison
2) Beef
3) Chicken
4) Pork
5) Cheese.    All of these are "Yes PLEASE" any time they are scented.

Nothing else.  "Milk Bones", dog biscuits, rawhide ... he'll politely take them, go out of sight, and drop it somewhere ....

But yes, I have had both.

Love em all.

Besides the companionship, basically ......

There really is a dog in there.  We got a small one for just this reason.  Now we're looking at a sidecar - then we can have another ?

We had to put our yellow lab, Roxy, down about 3 years ago.  Haven't gotten another dog since as we like to travel from time to time.  It's rather a PIA to get someone to watch your pet while you are away.  My favorite dog ever was my friend's English Bulldog, Otis.  I've never laughed so much at a dog's antics.  He's gone now, too, but made it 13 years.  That's quite a run for an English Bulldog.

Not trying to talk you into anything, but.
If finding a reliable person to watch over your companion is the issue, look to local shelter and animal control for volunteers.
They do what they do, for their love of dogs (and cats). I bet you can find someone happy to walk/feed/give love while you are away.
I have been involved in rescue/fostering/socializing through shelters and animal control all my life.
Another option would be to volunteer. That way your time available can be rewarding for you, and a homeless pet.
Just something to think about.

That's like comparing a professionally prepped racing Guzzi to the well used stock bikes people ride.. The truth is 98 percent of dogs eat shit and bark at the moon...
