Title: To be or not to be, Sell the Rune? That is the question.
Post by: Skyguyz on February 26, 2017, 02:13:00 AM
So.....

After having my 2016 MG Eldorado for a few months now I am struggling with parting with my beloved 2004 Honda Rune.

The Rune has been my staple long distant cruiser but the Eldorado is a much more modern bike with updated electronics.

I don't know if I can justify having two big cruisers at the same time. The Rune has custom Corbin hard bags and a easy to switch two-up Corbin seat.

It does not have cruise control, heated grips or any TCS or ABS or even a tach, but it is a classic. It is smoother due to it's 1800 + cc 6 cylinder

boxer engine. The MG has a very cool "Feel" to it's unique stroke though. I have taken the Rune on many long distant rides and it has always been uber reliable

and never gave me one issue, ever. I guess a part of me does not want to give up on the rare nature of the Rune,

(*Only 1800 ever built worldwide 2004-2005) and it is quite a "Looker." But it is a 9.5 out of 10 condition and will be a reliable machine for

years to come. But with my 2017 MV Augusta 800 RC on the way, I may have to say so long to the Rune. *Too many bikes and counting.

So this begs the question: Should I hold on to it for it's intrinsic value or sell it due to impractical nature of having a modern MG Eldorado???

Ya know.. when Richard Bach wrote "Johnathan Livingston Seagull," he suddenly could buy any airplane he ever wanted. So he did. After a period of time, he finally realized that he not only had to hire someone to maintain them, he also didn't have time to fly them all, and had to hire someone to do that. (!!)
Just sayin..
I, personally, can maintain and *ride* three bikes, although two is actually better. Ditch the Rune.

My first thought, keep that Rune. She's beautiful!
Second thought, bikes can start to own you  after a while.
Cherish the memories of Rune and find her a good home.
Keep the herd revolving, experience all the fascinating bikes you can.

Greetings from Las Vegas. You should keep the Rune because you called it 'beloved.' Done.

That Rune is a beautiful bike!!  Of course, the photos of your Eldorado (with those gorgeous bags) are really making me consider getting an Eldorado. Tuff decisions for sure.

A wise man once told me "If you want my advice,...don't take my advice".

I'd sell the Rune!

wow.  You're the only one I've ever heard of that has actually owned, kept and regularly ridden a Rune.

Given that, I'd keep it.    :bike-037:

Sell it. In the past being the owner of too many bikes, you find there is not enough time to use them sufficiently to justify having so many. When you start questioning the bike ( like having no ABS ) it`s time to let it go. If you have many, they need to be different styles. Once the newness of the F3 wears off you will go back to the F4 and the F3 will languish. When 2 bikes are very similar (F3/F4 ) the one with the most power wins the most rides.

I'd keep it.  IF it was a Valkyrie or a Goldwing, I'd say sell it.  Hope this helps.   Nice color and quirky enough to be with the Guzzi.

I think this is what's referred to as a "first world problem" Sky. It doesn't have TCS, how about TCAS ? If not, ditch it.

Hang on to that Rune for a year. I have a 2014 1400 Touring and have had brake issues as others have had and a clutch issue as well. I have a 1996 Honda Shadow Ace that has never let me down and I keep it as a back up if the Touring lets me down.

I feel your pain Sky. I recently bought a six pack of Calvin Klein briefs, you know, the blue and grey pack? Yeah, they're pretty awesome. But here's the thing: I'm not sure what to do with my old tried-and-true Hanes tighty-whities. You've been there, right? So I go to the CK forum and ask the group and some people say keep em because they fit great and I've been through so much with 'em (Jamaica and NOLA? These briefs have seen it all!) and others say lose em because I have the CK briefs now and that's where I'm at...but come on! It's a CK forum, of course they'll say that. So I'm not sure what to do. In the mean time, I'm wearing both briefs simultaneously, yeah, it's a little snug, but it's gotta be done until I sort this out.

I guess my best advice is to go with your heart, brother. It knows what to do.

Keep the Rune! I watched a show once that included Billy Joel's motorcycle collection (look up 20th Century Cycles) and he was talking about some bikes that he regretted selling. He said the Jay Leno gave him the advice to never sell anything, which is what he's sticking to now. Of course, they are millionaires, but if you are having doubts and can pull it off, keep it!

My vote is to keep the Rune (full disclosure:  I have eight motorcycles and can't seem to part with any).

The Rune is so rare, so beautiful, and so unusual that I'd regret selling it a couple of years down the line. And it's not some weird, unreliable, leaky machine that demands much other than being kept clean and run once in a while.

Good advice...because in the end...we are all just "caretakers" of these fine machines... :thumb:  :1:

This is the last RUNE I saw on the streets, Nov. 2005 in Pleasanton, CA.  Cool bike!  Only made for 1-2 years, yes?

My buddy has a RUNE.  You already know who nice they are to ride.
It's paid for.  It's unique.  It'll be worth more (hopefully) in the future.  Freshen up the fluids, stabilize the fuel, and park it.
In 10 years revisit the question.  I'd doubt it'll be worth less then.  But if it is, by how much?  You might get fortunate.

I'd hang on to it.

The Rune is very unique, and I think it's a real head turner. I would keep it. A short ride every couple of weeks will keep it's legs working.

Uhh.. *drain* the fuel. Even Avgas has a tough time being stable for 10 years.

Keep it.

The Rune was never intended to be anything other than a factory show bike. If you have the storage and the patience to wait another half dozen years or so, it will start becoming bike-show eligible after 2024 or so, right? So if you can hang onto it that long & have the desire to do the bike show circuit [which is admittedly much less glitzy & varied as the car show circuit] then knock yourself out. I never found the Rune attractive, and I'd rather have the money invested in a more fungible sort of appreciating asset, but to each  their own. Beyond that, my motto is "Ride'em, don't hide'em" so how many bikes do you really need?

It depends on what you want. I have let some bikes go that I should have kept but in the end most if not all can be replaced should you change your mind. I am now down to six good bikes, but I know it will change again and again. Have fun!

Find a reputable motorcycle museum. Donate it long term with (written, legal) condition you get it back if they close their doors or after X number of years. Send it to them "pickled" for long term storage. Let them house it and shine it for you until you are ready to have it back. Nice bike.

Thanks to all who replied. It was refreshing to see all the posts and opinions, all with merit. I threw the Rune on Cycletrader and will see what happens. I do not have to sell it and will hold out for asking price if needed. If you have any suggestions/opinions to my ad, feel free to comment. Thanks again; this forum rocks!!!

Nicely done ad. Cool bike! If storage is an issue I say sell it. You have a nice price tag on it. Test the waters and see what happens. Spring is always a good time to list your bike.
